5, M . ,, .W K 'Swap -he Q Q, . MM . ft A ' i X , Thirty years ago a ship was commissioned. lt was a large conglomeration of cold steel named the United States Ship SPERRY. Since that time tens of thousands of officers and men have established the tra- ditions and reputation of SPERRY. They were men who did their job as they saw it. They were men who did impossible things as others saw it. There were great men, small men, but they all added up to the crews of the USS SPERRY who kept their submarines on the line. They continued to do their job in war and peace allowing our submarines to continue their outstanding contribution to our nation. It is very difficult sometimes not to be on the fighting line, not to be in the forward area, not to see other countries, not to be underway sailing for distant shores and adventureg but the officers and men of SPERRY have been on those distant shores and in those foreign seas just as surely as if they were physically present on their brood of fighting submarines. We can all hold our head up high when we see the accomplishments of our fellow navy- men and submariners and realize that without us to succor and support them they would be unable to operate in their 'magnificent fashion. The motto of SPERRY could well be, we donit have to be fancy to live up to tradition, we just have to know how to fix things, and how to keep on fighting. The unequalled response of the officers and men of SPERRY over the years and through this thirtieth birthday has been tremendous. The inventiveness, the inginuity, the dedication and just plain hard work of the men of the SPERRY leaves nothing to be desired and is reflected in the history of their performance. No one knows what the future of SPERRY is to be, but certainly it will continue to reflect the proud glory of her past and the undaunted spirit of her future. M. C. SCOGGINS Captain, U. S. N. Instead of discussing the usual administrative interests of an Executive Officer, I would like to digress and discuss SPERRY's motto and shield insignia. Our motto is MDE PROFUNDIS TRIDENS, which means OUT OF THE DEPTHS, SEA POWER? This is simple, dignified, clear, and in keeping with the mission of the Submarine Force. Our shield is divided into quarters as follows: Upper Right: The Black Trident, traditionaldiriblem of Neptune, symbolizes dominion over the seas- the seas being represented by the light blue field. Upper Left: The crown of gold, a mark of sovereign power, denotes the naval supremacy of the submarine and, in particular, the submarines supported be SPERRY. The field of Navy Blue signifies that the supremacy is, indeed, naval. Lower Left: The III reveals that units displaying this shield are members of Submarine Squadron THREE. Lower Right, The heraldic Dolphin signifies the Submarine Force in that it is a mammal whose natural habitat is beneath the waves. Normally peaceful, it is fearsome when aroused and, if attacked, will intrepidly engage predators much larger than itself. The Dolphin also recalls the insignia of the sub- marine service and is represented in a diving attitude to represent the efforts of the Submarine Force to push back the frontier of the depths and constantly seek greater achievement. Last, but not least ,the gold and black banner prominently displayed across the shield leaves no doubt that this particular insignia is that of USS SPERRY KAS l2J. J. T. LEWIS Captain, U. S. N. Executive Officer 3 Executive OFFICER I- 'll'W 'f 'ir... ,i.. -asf. ' ' ' f ' HISTORY OF USS SPERRY IAS-121 On December 17, 1941 . the hull ofa ship destined to play a notable part in the winning ofthe war in the Pacific, slipped into the water at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Mare Island, California, and on May 1, 1942 the submarine tender U.S.S. SPERRY was commissioned and turned over to her first commanding officer, Captain R. H. Smith. Sponsored be Mrs. Robert B. Lea, Daughter of Elmer Ambrose Sperry, inventor and pioneer of submarine construction, after whom the ship was named, the SPERRY immediately undertook her Shakedown cruise and on August 2, 1942 she arrived in Pearl Harbor to begin her record of service in World War II. Her assignments during the following three years took her to such far flung places as Australia, New Caledonia, Majuro Atoll, Eniwetok Atoll, Guam and Midway. Like the tentacles of a giant octopus, the submarines serviced by the SPERRY reached out to harass Japanese shipping. While at Midway, the SPERRY serviced more than 70 submarines within five months. Only consistent hard work and excellent leadership made this record attainable. Between March and September of 1945, while at Majuro, SPERRY personnel helped in the construction of the first submarine recuperation center in the Central Pacific area. For their outstanding work in planning, constructing, and organizing the camp, three SPERRY officers were later decorated, Captain C. P. Erck CCOMSUBRON TENJ, Captain Thew, and Lieutenant E. E. Thomas. SPERRY personnel were later employed in building Camp Dealy, the first sub- marine recuperation camp on Guam. The main duty of the SPERRY since the end ofthe war has been to provide services for squadron THREE submarines in the San Diego area. X l A A umn Qi The USS SPERRY CAS 121 was originally designed to support one torpedo, the MK14 Mod 3. At present the SPERRY maintains four types of Submarine weapons, the MK 14 Mod 5, the MK 37 Mods 2 and 3, the MK 45 Mods 1 and 2, and the MK 2,3 guided missile. Soon another submarine weapon will be added to SPERRY's inventory, the MK 48 Mod 1. In addition to the above listed weapons, SPERRY, in her career, has maintained the MK 16, the MK 23, the MK 27, and the MK 28 torpedo. The latter three are now retired from service. To maintain these complex submarine weapons sixty highly trained torpedomen are assigned to the Weapons Repair Department. Each torpedoman has an average of thirty three weeks of schooling which gives them the capability to overhaul, test and maintain the weapons in SPERRY's inventory. ..To ensure the Weapons Repair Department maintains the skills and training necessary to provide reliable weapons to the tended submarines, four inspections per year are conducted by outside activities. Additionally, a quality assurance program and on the job training are always in effect. SPERRY's Weapons Repair Department recieves and issues approximately one hundred and fifty warshot torpedoes per year and approximately fifty exercise torpedoes. In addition to the Weapons Repair Departmentls responsibility for torpedo maintenance is the requirement for test, grooming, and upgrading of the Torpedo Fire Control Systems aboard submarines tended. Eighteen Fire Control Technicians are assigned to test, repair and ORDALT as required the MK 101 106, and 113 Fire Control Systems. These skilled technicians additionally repair and calibrate many of the test equipments used in SPERRY's weapons preparation shops. As you can see your shipmates in the Weapons Repair Department have a big job to do, as we all do, supporting the submarines of Submarine Flotilla ONE. J. E. ALLEN l..T., U. S. N. Ancillary services available include full physical examinations, including electrocardiograms, diving examinations and prescription lenses. To meet the challenge of the modern Navy, the SPERRY Medical Department also has a comprehensive Radiological Health protection program and the capability to Air Evac patients requiring further medical treatment during deployments. Sick Call still goes down at the appointed time and emergency cases are treated at anytime, but methods and types of treatment have improved, increasing the capabilities of the USS SPERRY since those early days. Care and treatment of the sick and injured is still the basic 'goal of the SPERRY Medical Department. Although three decades have passed and many changes have occurred, Sickbay is still the same haven for the present ship's company as it has been in the past. M. S. BARBER LTJMCJ, U. S. N. Personnel in E Division are from the electricians mate or interior communications electricians ratings. Since the plant is very large, the division is divided into four groups or gangs. Main Power maintains the main propulsion and main propulsion auxiliaries. Auxiliary Power takes care of the general power distribution and lighting circuits throughout the ship. The Battery Shop is assigned the tasks of maintaining the electrical system of SPERRY's small boats, changing and testing portable lanterns and conducting electrical safety checks on portable equipment. The Interior Commu- nications personnel are responsible for the telephone systems, all interior communications equipment, and the ship's master gyro. Damage Control Division is separated into three work centers-the DC Overhaul, DC Hull Technician and Boat Shops-whose main tasks include maintenance of the watertight integrity of the ship as well as its small boats and deck machinery. More specifically these shops are responsible for maintaining repair lockers, doors and hatches, firefighting equipment, the tiremain and ventilation systems, the ship's heads and washro0mS plus basic hull repair and general sheet metal and pipe work within the ship. M and A Division is a dual responsibility. M Division is responsible for the propulsion of SPERRY. Propulsion is accomplished through the use of diesel electric combination. Utilizing eight main diesel engines and two propulsion motors, SPERRY can make 17 knots. A Division is responsible for all aux- iliary equipment such as galley, laundry, air conditioning, refrigeration, oxygen, nitrogen, boilers, water distilation, elevators, and steering gear. 87 ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT I Yes Chief, Yes Chief, Yes Chief V, , , , I If Franklin can figure it out so can I.
