HAPPY TRAILS The 1982 Cross Country Team had a successful season as shown by the meet results. Despite not having a single great runner, the top five of the Cat Pack ran tightly bunched to defeat a majority of their opponents. Typical of this was the Sectional Meet where only 42 seconds separated the first and fifth Bearcat finisher as the team qualified for the District Meet for only the third time in the school's history. Junior, Mark Ernst, earned most valuable runner by leading the team in all but one meet, and setting an SHS record over the new 5000 meter distance of 17:22. Doug Dewitt, the lone senior, was number two man and re- ceived the Bearcat Award . Sophomore, Barb Brother- wood, the lone girl on the team, won the NWC girl's race, and later set a girls SHS record over 5000 meters of 20:18. Kevin Crites set a freshman record over 5000 me- ters of 17:49. Y ,, Vx TURN ME LOOSE A couple of weeks before Halloween you can hear whispers of the upcoming event, costume day at school. ln October when ghosts and goblins come out for the day at SHS the students dress up in costumes, you could find anything from twinkies to witches. They participated in a contest for the scar- iest, funniest, most original, best group, and un- known. At the Assembly winners were announced and prizes awarded. then the students scattered to watch the silent movie Phantom of the Opera. 5153.5 . RM., O GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Q. . Varsity Row 1: M. The SHS girls ended the season with a bang with 6 straight wins and the ending season record was 11-8. Holding the title as co-champs of NWC, sharing their title with Crest- veiw. After playing 2 scrimmages in which the bearcats won 1 and tied the other they went into the year with an anticipation of a passing game because of returning quarter- back Gordon Cox. The season started with a defeat by Minster, but next was a highlight ballgame over Columbus Grove for a big win. At the middle of the season the record was 2-2-1, the tie with Ada. Another highlight of the season was the game wlth Flint Acade- my who came from Michigan to fill the slot which Crestview left when they dropped football. Through the season the Bearcats kept up their fight but fell to Delphos and ended the season with a record of 4-5-1. Gordon Cox and Scott Wood made 1st League Team. Mark Goecke made 2nd Team.
