Only 15 of these geniuses are graduating together at Spencerville. Many of the Seniors joined the class in the third and seventh grades when the school district expanded. As seventh graders we were moved to- the high school, when four new rooms were completed in December. As Freshmen, sixty-eight in number and Ruth Lies, our president, a few wonders from Jennings way were added. The wiener roast and a skating party were the limits of our activities that year. Fifty-eight returned as sophomores-ten cf the so-called wonders weren't. Lewis Metzger was our president. Again we attended the wiener roast and two skating' parties. Miss Becker sponsored a trip to Ford Vil- lage and Edison Institute Museum at Dearborn, Michigan. We crossed to Windsor, Canada, and then went to Toledo Zoo. We even had a boat ride on the great Maumee River. Later that spring we had a thank-you party for Miss Becker which ended by her baking cake for the whole gang. The boys were already showing ability in the sports. Ben Kelly re- ceived his first manageir s letter. As Juniors our activities increased and were I11OI'e varied. Our lady president, Vivian George, led us in great style. We're now numbering fifty-one. The Jr.-Sr. Wiener roast started us off, then the rabbit supper. Later sixteen juniors, under the direction of Mr. Mossman, presented the play, Who Wouldn't Be Crazy. We had two basketball lettermen this year, Bob Croft and Lester Imler. Also Ben Kelly and Ray Brandyberry received manager's letters. The boys also showed athletic ability on the champion volleyball team and the baseball team. Some of our musicians entered the district music contest in which Bob Place with his famous fiddle went to the state contest. - A trip, again sponsored by Miss Becker, was taken through the south- ern part of Ohio. Ewen though a breakdown made it necessary to spend six hours at Ft. Ancient, the trip was a great success. Six members at- tended the Honor Banquet at Beaverdam. The biggest and best moment of a junior's life came when we planned and attended the Jr.-Sr. Recep- tion. Our last and fullest year was begun with fifty-two members and Richard Becker, as president. Margaret Hash, Eunice Koenig, Edithi Prof- fitt withdrew and Jack Cook joined the navy. Again the Wiener roast and rabbit supper were enjoyed. In addition a farewell party for Peggy Hash was planned before she left for Criders- ville. Basketball lettermen this year were Bill McKinley, captaing Bob Croft, Lewis Metzger, Lester Imler, Bob Miller, Bob Haller and Edwin Graessle. Manager's letters were awarded to Ray Brandyberry and Bill Horvath. ' The class play, Strained Relations, casting twelve seniors and directed by Mr. Mossman, was presented in April. Richard Becker and Amarilla Sutton were announced our validic- torian and salutatorian respectively. Six seniors attended the Honor Banquet held in this high school. And now we wish to Uhiank everyone, especially the faculty, for their efforts in making our school careers a success. We sincerely hope we shall be able to live up to the high standards set for us while we were in High School. Tonight we close our high school careers and tomorrow each of us will take his place in the com- munity along with the many others. Along with taking our place in the community comes our share of the responsibilities, our share in the profits derived from them and our share of the pleasures that come from performing these duties. As the graduating youth all over the nation take on these responsibilities they are going to demand that they have the same rights as other adults. If they can go out from high school and carry their share of the burdens they should expect to share the same privileges as older ones enjoy. As we look back and think of all the school days together, thoughts of regret rise in our minds that these school-day pleasures must end. Year after year we have gone over the same lessons, we have had similar trials, we have shared school triumphs together, and we have taken our gains and losses as one. Our thoughts have been all in oneg but now, the day of graduation marks the first great change in our lives. The course of each of us will be different in the future. As we leave this high school tonight each of us will choose a different vocation to follow through life. Some of us will probably go on and get a higher education before starting our life vocation. Whatever, though, is in store for each of us we do not know, but surely it will be a life of great activity and variety. In climbing the hill of life what paths shall we follow? Shall we fol- low the paths of those who have gone on before us? If we choose to fol- low in the footsteps of those who have gone before us shall we be able to avoid the pitfalls and crevices as we go up the hill? Some of us will probably follow the footsteps of those who have gone on before. We shall advance up that course trying to make it broader and better than those who have gone before us have made. We shall not be satisfied to stop where our predecessors have stopped, but will continue to Strive for the top of the hill-our final goal. Will those of us who follow these paths be able to look ahead to see the errors made by those who have gone before and will they be able to avoid making the same mis- takes? Only time will answer these questions. IlllllllllllllllllllIIlllIIlllllIlIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII P589 19 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-IllIIIIIllIIIIIllllIlIIIllllllllllllllllllllll ooo-ooo--ECHOESo00--ova VALEDICTORY---Cont. Then, too, there will be some of us who will blaze new paths up the hill of life. These people will open new fields of industry and new ways off doing things. It will offer new adventures for those who blaze these trails. No matter whether we follow the paths that are already made or whether we blaze new ones up the hill of life we must all face certain problems of the times. We must all watch for errors made by those be- fore us and prepare to avoid repeating them. A wise and thouglhtful writer says: The education received at school and college is but a beginning, and is mainly valuable in so far as it trains us in the habit of continuous application and ena.b1es us to educate ourselves after a definite' plan and system. We only hope that our school life has given us these habits. Feeling that we have gained these results, our thoughts turn toward you in heartfelt gratitude for the educational advantages with which you have favored us. With this in mind We aim and hope to become members of society, worthy of the school so well established and maintained by this generous community, For this we wish to extend to you 0-ur thanks. We, also, wish to extend our thanks to the faculty who have striven to prepare us for our start in life. Tonight we must break tlhe tie that has bound us as a class. Wherever you, fellow classmates may go, may you succeed in life and may you carry with you the spirit that has prevailed in the class- room. As we leave the school to enter upon our trip up the hill of life, let us remember this poem by Berton Braley: For the best verse hasn't been rhymed yet, The best house hasn't been planned, Tlhe highest peak ha.sn't been climbed yet, The mightiest rivers aren't spanned, Don't worry fret, faint-hearted, The chances have just begun, For the best jo-bs haven't been started, The best work hasn't been done. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIllIIIIIIIllIIIIIIllllllllIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII Page 20 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlllllIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIllllllllllllllll o o 010 o 0--ECHO ESooo--oo0- Salutatory We, the members of this graduating class, are glad to welcome you to our commencement. This has long been our objective, one which we have spent twelve years reaching. Most of us were not con- scious of the fact that we had such a long way to go when we started but became increasingly aware of it as the years went by. Now that we have reached this goal we are most happy to have you here with us tonight that we might share with you the happiness that we all feel. This objective became a reality because we had other smaller objectives that took us from day to day and year to year. Some of these were individ- ual and others were of the class. Others were accepted by the school as a whole and all of these were used as stepping stones to the final goal- this, our graduation All of us have had the thought in mind of what we were to do when we graduated. Each one of us at first thought of the pleasure we would have in not having to go to school and that we might be free to do as we please. Then as time passed we began to realize that this was not true at all. We were going to have to study and work and plan as much as we had been doing and that we would have personal goals that would require us to give much of our time and effort. Now most of those have been laid aside because we have a more common goal to attain. We are glad that we can make our contribution to make this our country, if not the world, a safe place for us to live and to choose individual goals to attain. I might say that music has been some cf our goals during high school, just as music has always been a. goal to man. I would like to start here and tell something about the development of music and the type of music of a few countriesvand perhaps illustrate a few examples on my violin. When man iirst used his voice to produce pleasing tone qualities, he did not know then that he would some day produce the iine music that we now enjoy. Neither did the first musical instrument resemble our modern day instrument nor the music that was played in those days sound like ours does today. In the days of the prehistoric man music was one of the most satisfactory ways to showing his emotions, as it still is today. But so long as it was mainly by voice it was limited in compass, in dynamic power, and in rhythmic effects, and so came the development of the musical instruments. The Hrst step to a musical instrument was the stretching of animal skins over a hollowed out stone or tree trunk forming the Hrst drum. Another form was the rattle as used largely by the American Indian. The Indian used a scale of only tive notes called the pentatonic scale Cpenta for five and tonic meaning tonesl. This scale was also used by the Chinese, Japanese, Scotts, Africans, ancient Peruvians and Mexicans and others. It is like the five black keys on our modern piano starting with F sharp. The Chinese use this system of music yet today. They do not use music as a means of expressing beauty as other nations do but treat it more like a problem in arithmetic or crossword puzzle. Their scale is the pentatonic, but while we have only two scales, the major and minor, they had eighty-four. Their music, to us is singsong, shrill and nerve wracking. Their orchestras are seventy-five per cent noise-makers, and we get very little pleasure out of Chinese melodies for they seem to wander about aimlessly and do not end comfortably. Here is an example of a Chinese Hymn: Besides the drum a.nd rattle the Indians also have the flute although there is no special music for it. One of the first stringed instruments was the lyre and as used by the ancient Greeks had four strings and later seven or more. People who sang to the accompaniment of the lyre were called lyric poets . The Greek scales were based on tetrachords, tetra meaning four and chord, stringg that is a group of fourstrings. This is one tetrachord: There were also two others composed of four notes similar to the above. Another instrument invented and used by the Greeks was the monochord. It was made of a wooden box with just one string. But our modern scale-that one with which we are all familar, seems to us the most complete and satisfactory of any of those other ones. And I should like to end this talk by playing a simple American song. Thus we greet you and welcome you. Our single goal for tonight is to entertain you with our accom- plishments and to make you well pleased and happy. Please accept our greetings and thanks. Many things were changed, but we were determined to do the best we could with what we had. The Annual Junior-Senior Wiener roast, the first event of the season, was held on September 25. The Junior Class Play on November 20 appeared next on the program of activities. To help win victory we sacrificed our yearly trip for a scrap drive which yielded several tons. To stimulate interest in the salvage collection a fifteen minute program was sponsored over W L O K, Lima, Ohio, on November 23. The Junior- Senior rabbit supper was an event of the same date. The last and mosli important event was the Junior-Senior reception. With our Junior year behind us we have learned many things that will aid us in becoming successful seniors for next year. Class Prophecy The Adventures of the Squeeky Nlousv As the steady stream of vapor arose from the boiling test tube, I sat sleepily gazing at it. Somehow I felt different, I knew I was in the Memorial Hospital, Li- ma, Ohio and the time was 9:00 P, M., year 1950, but yet something was different. I seemed to be sinking, sinking, as if into the farthest corner of the room. I closed my eyes, but when I opened them I found that what seemed like the corner of the room was only the corner of my chair, but worst of all, I had taken on the appearance of a little mouse. Impossible, you say, things don't happen like that, but they were happening. So I scampered down the chair's leg and through the door and slid with squeeking delight on the gleaming hallway floor. As I stopped beside a desk four nurses appeared on the scene. They mustn't see me so I hid behind the desk. I could see- them plainly: they were: Ruth Bol- ton, supervisor of the Baby Department: Amarilla Sutton, surgical nurse: Helen Beerman, supervisor of men's ward: and LaDonna Youngpeter, private nurse. They seemed to be discussing something. Listen- Ruth remarks: Girls, Pvt. Robt, Miller is the proud father of a 10-lb. baby girl. Helen: Guess who's' in my ward? Who? asked Ruth. Bob Croft, Leo Brown, Bill' Miller, and Glen Whitling'f' answered Helen. Bob and Leo smacked their plane into Bill's and Glen's while attempting to take off. Amarilla: No kidding? Helen: And that isn't all Grease- monkey Dutch Goetz was knocked down with the im- pact and is now suffereing from a lack of memory. LaDonna: You should have been in there about 15 minutes ago, Bob was shooting paper wads at Leo. Ruth B.: I can't believe it. Oh here comes interne Layton Bowsher, let's tell him. Squeek- Amarilla: EAek-a mouse. LaDonna: There it goes down the exit stairs Squeek. that was a narrow escape, I might have been killed, I left the hospital, dashed down the walk, ran up the running board of a truck. and climbed into the pocket on the door, just as the engine started. It seemed to me as if we stopped, I felt myself being swung backward, and stopped with a bang. Recovering from the sudden stop, I peeked over the top and saw two men. One I recognized as Robt. Mulholland and the other as Eddy Graessle Cdriverl. Eddy was saying: Ho,w's your farm, Bob? Don't you get sorta lonely out there on the Spencerville Pike all by yourself? Bob: What do you mean all my myself. I got neighbors- why that dairy farm run by Ruth Moorman and Don- old Rothe is only two miles away. That's not all- their hired girl is Ruth Starkey. Alone nothing I'm surrounded by people. Eddy: You don't say! Just then I slipped back into the corner of the much too large pocket. I was awakened again from my little snooze with a jerk, the car had stopped. I peeked over the top. The two men were gone. but a big box was on the seat: it tempted me so much that I climbed into it. No sooner had this happened than the box was roughly carried and carelessly dropped. Recovering myself. I jumped from the box. Much to my amazement I dis- covered I was in a grocery store. none other than Kro- ger's. The manager, Ruth Patrick, was waiting on Ruth Lies. Listen! Ruth Lies is saying: I am so happy to hear of Jack C'ook's promotion to Admiral of the Navy, Ruth Patrick: Thanks, what about your coming marriage? Ruth Lies: Everything's set and Dorothy Cavinder is going to be the flower girl after all. Paul Walthers, chief efficient clerk remarks: Is it true that the minister will be Bob Haller? Ruth Lies: That's right. Ruth Patrick: It seems so diflicult to believe that he turned out to be a minister. Just then Ben Kelly editor of the local newspaper, rushes in saying: Have you heard the news about the medicine show that's coming to town? All three: No, what gives? Ben Kelly laughing: And its main attractions are: Stanley K i?J, knife thrower and his gorgeous partner Mildred E t?J and Oh, this will kill you: it is rumored that Lewis Metzger and Bill Horvath are disguised as Wicka Yvacka Hula girls. Hal Hal Ha! Oh, Boy, will this make the front page. W'ell, so-long. Squeek --there I go out the door.J As I dashed down the street who should I see- but the president of the bank, Richard Becker: the man- ager of the Elevator, Bill McKinley: and Sergeant George McElroy. There seemed to be a pretty hot discussion. Listen! George is shouting: Well, I'm going to vote for Lester Im1er. Bill answers: Well, that doesn't mean he will be the best president. Richard: My secretary, Mary Moorman. says she's go- ing to vote for the famous lawyer, Jean Rader, and if I don't, she'll leave me. Who'll I vote for? Bill McKinley: My secretary, Betty Stonehill, is vot-ing for whomever I tell her to, so there too. However, I dashed on and into what seemed to be a woman's hair-dressing convention, the Beauty Parlor. Before I had time to think, I was inside a woman's shopping bag, peeking over the top. The operator Margery Jones, was asking her secretary, Gladys Eley: How do you want your hair fixed? Gladys: Oh, the Very latest, such as one of those featured in the pho- tographs of the model Betty Wlenkenf' Anna Long, the assistant operator: Oh, to be photographed by that famous Ray Brandyberryf' Manicurlst June Caskill: How about some of those clothes Nancy Sut- ton designs? Oh, simply divine, remarks prominent society leader Twila Evans Graham. You're next, Twila remarks Margery, after placing Gladys under the drier, Say, did you hear that Bob Place and his swanky classical orchestra made good in New York?, asks Anna. Twila: Oh yes, and his soloists were violinist Joan Medaugh and trombone player Stanley Rockholdf' Anna: It seems so difficult to believe after all these years Twila: Just think .Ioan was my best friend. Homemaker Betty Slentz, coming out from under a beauty mask remarks: I hear WAAC Maxine Miller is returning home on a visit? Anna: Yes, I know: I received a card from her yesterday. She wrote that WAAC Elizabeth Shaffer won't be home for another week. Just then I started to jump for the floor but I ac- cidentally upset the shopping bag. Everything went rolling, including me. Eek--a mouse girls! screamed Twila. Run for your life! shouts Anna. Helpl Crash! Booml June in her excitement knocks over her manicuring table. Everything is going round and round. Wake up! wake up! shouts Ruth Bolton, Vivian: Oh Hum. Where am I, Ruth- Ruth: What's wrong with you? You look like you had a nightmare. Vivian: I have. Look at nie. Do I look like a mouse? Ruth: No of course not, don't be silly. I dreamed I was a mouse and I saw everyone in our class. -Ring-ring-ring-, Ruth: That's absurd, you should get to bed earlier, come on, we'll be late for duty. Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1943, being sound of mind and knowing our death is near because of the crim- es committed by us, such as, the use of incorrect English, handing papers late or not at all and tor- menting our dear teachers until their hair starts to turn gray. First of all were t-he Wednesday evening concerts played for eight consecutive weeks at Fountain Square. We also parti- cipated in the Pledge to the Nation Parade in Lima. In July the band enjoyed an afternoon of swimming at Wap-akoneta and a picnic supper. During the school year the band presented: an assembly pro- gram, a spring musical, a concert at the Community Institute, and play- ed at each local basketball game. Our ever-increasing uniform fund has, for the present, been in- vested in War Bonds and it is our aim to add to the present sum and make it possible for some band soon to have these new uniforms. Dorothy Dillon, Band Reporter. Other games were three with Perry. Our Bearcubs won all their games by high scores. Captain Bob Brooks was the only tirst string player to return from last year. Others on the team were: Robert Moorman, Ncrmani Hager, Robert Carr and Gail McCain. They were supported by a string of capable subs.
