DEDICATION l CARL DAVIES We, the class of 1936 do hereby dedicate this annual to the memory of all those former members of our group, who on account of sickness, and many various reasons over which they may or may not have had control, have had to drop back or out entirely from the pleasant duties of preparation for life and for life work. We especially do dedicate this book to the memory of Carl Davies, who during our Junior year was forced to leave school and retire to the Tubercu- losis Hospital in Lima, Ohio. With these few words we wish them success and happiness in the future. It is still standing and is a part of the present grade school building. Shortly after, a small frame building was built, in the southwest corner of the schoolground, for the primary class. Later additions were built to the brick build- ing until the present structure was evolved. At this time the school was a gram- mar school. Facilities for a high school were introduced in 1886, with an enrollment the first year of probably about twenty. As the enrollment increased the building was enlarged and for many years the high school pupils attended the building that is now the Grade School. On February 4, 1927 the new high school building was dedicated. It is a mod- ern building that is very well departmentalized and equipped. The present high school system was chartered April 14, 1905 from the commissioner of Common Schools of Ohio. The first class to graduate, which was in 1888, consisted of eight graduates. In 1933 a class of 56 graduated, which is the largest class ever to graduate from Spencer High. The present enrollment of the high school is 233 and 49 of these are destined to become the Class of '36, Six BCARD OF EDUCATION Standing: Mr. George Mr. Mitchell Mr. Hilty Seated: Mr. Beerman Mr. Goodwin Mr. Sunderland Mr. John A. Goodwin, President, who has been a board member for three years, is employed by the State Highway Department. He not only works on the board but also works to keep the roads in condition for our school buses. Mr. John A. Beerman has been a member of the board for two years. His occu- pation is farming. He has taken an active part in the farm organizations of the community and has done a fine job on the school board. Mr. Robert I. Mitchell is a new member of the board. He lives on a farm near Spencerville and is employed by the county to repair our roads. He has done fine work this year and we are sure that it shall continue. Mr. C. Levi Hilty has been a member of the board for two years. His interests are centered around his meat market through which he serves the people as faithfully as he serves the community through the school board. Mr. Francis George has been a member of the board for three years. He has worked diligently to serve the public as best he can. He is employed in our Citi- zens and Farmers Bank. Mr. H. B. Sunderland is the clerk for the board. He operates a shoe store in this town. He has done a fine piece of work for the short time he has been serv- ing the board. These men do all within their power to serve the community and give every possible opportunity to the pupils. During the current year these men in coopera- tion with the W. P. A., have completed a bus garage on our local high school ground. We think it only fitting and proper that we, the Class of '36 , should compliment them on bettering conditions under which we have finished our school life. Seven, Eight Du ' facully C. W. Nine SENIOR STATIC August 14, 1950 Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Station A B C bringing you Paul Sutton and the events of the day. From the nation's capital today come reports that the distinguished senator, Robert Redick, has introduced a bill, making upholstered seats compulsory in all public schools. Also in Washington circles, is the report that Directress Annabelle Morris is soon to award the Harmon Trophy to that intrepid aviator, Lieut. Frank Mack, for his recent round-the-world hop in the amazing time of 12 hours. Also to be present at the awarding of the medal are Secretary of the State, Mary Maurer, Secretary of War, Ruth Hays, and the Secretary of the Navy, Lela Ruth Bowen, with her assistant, Juliana Miller. The eminent physicist, John W. Cochrun, has astounded the scientific world, by finding a perfect vacuum-in the head of one his co-workers, Robert Townsend. Prof. Dwight Becker has squared the circle by a secret formula which he is trying to sell to a dough-nut company. Warden John Hilty of Sing-Sing has announced that the riot there is well under control, although two guards, Dee Sherer and Lester Schwartz, were injured in the uprising.. Trouble is brewing in the labor world today. President Albert Sproul. of the Push-Easy Perambulator Company, is at this time negotiating for peace with James Miller, the head of the striking workers in his plant, who complained because they had to advertise the perambulators. With the arrival of Federal Negotiator Edith Hayman, it is hoped that the matter will soon be closed. Harold Boyer's Follies opened today in New York, featuring Miss Fern Hover- man. Also included in the repertoire are the following well known chorus girls: Mary Rockhold, Pauline Seibert, Nancy McNeal, Ruth Wilson, Mary Hindenlang, and Grace Wiseman. Betty Rider and her world famous Gorgeous Girls Band are leav- ing New York today for a three month tour in Europe. In the sports world we have the opening game of the world series. Lowell Bow- ersock, pitching for the Toledo Mud Boats, shut out the Chicago Dirty Sox, in the most spectacular game of the season. Gabby Miller, catcher for the Dirty Sox, was today suspended from the league for calling Umpire Russ Carr a prevaricator. ' Pete Patrick, stellar short stop of the Mud Boats, still holds the lead in the season's batting average with his .444. Today witnessed the finals of the women's National Open tennis matches, Hazel Goodwin defeating Evelyn Leffel for the single champion- ship, and the team of Helen and Cleona Martin going down to defeat at the hands of Emaline Haller and Martha Rohrbach. News of the kidnapping of two American missionaries, Helen Snyder and Gladys Lies, comes to us through the Renga News Agency. They are being held by river pirates for a ransom of 2,000 yen. Here is good news for housewives. Prof. Dean Deniston has just succeeded in producing an onion which, according to professors, will never cause tears. From Spencerville, Ohio, comes news of a 375,000 hold-up of the Canal Bank in that city. Cashiers Madge Kinney and Frances Burnett were forced to lie on the fioor while the robbers scooped the money into bags and then made their get-away. Word of the robbery was immediately sent out to neighboring police by chief-of-police, Mary Lauer, and G-women Ruth Oehlhof and Frances Fronk are on the job now, furnished with descriptions of the bandits by the president of the bank, Donelda Taylor, and three customers at the time of the robbery, LaDonna Huber, Wilma Thompson, and Muriel Robison. Your announcer is Vaughn Hilty. This is Station A B C now signing off. L. V. H., '36 n Tm SENIORS END HIGH SCHOOL CAREERS In September, 1932, 67 Freshmen were on the start- ing line for the starter's gun. Dwight Decker was our pace setter for the start, and that was an important part of our race, as we were later to learn. Unfortu- nately, some of the participants had not trained as well in grade school for this race as they should have, and as a result the were forced to drop out of the Y race or back. We received nourishment in the form of the Freshman-Sophomore and by the time we were at the first most of us weie getting our wind and accustomed to the new track , with the or ourvtrainer, Mr. Hauser. As we went into the second quarter of pace-setter was John Cochrun, and we on the run weiner roast, quarter post were getting helpful hints our race, our retained Mr. Hausser as our trainer Various members len thened - g their stride, and went out into outside activities such as baseball, basketball and music. We again received nourishment on the run at the Freshman-Sophomore weiner roast, although we didn't do as much running as the Frosh! As we came into the half-way mark, we were running along smcothly, and thought our- selves ready for whatever might come. A The third quarter of our run was the hardest yet. We had to dig right in and pull to put over everything with the finish that we felt was necessary, but then we had the satisfaction of seeing a job well done , on our class plays Huburt the Great and Hero by the Hour , and at our reception for the Seniors. Dean Deniston was our pacesetter this quarter, and Miss Reiner was our new trainer. Some of our good run- ners again went in for the outside activities, and made their mark, in scholarship as well as in athletics. As we entered the last lap of our big race, headed by Dean Deniston and Miss Deemer as our trainer, our team consisted of 49 members, not as many as we started out with, but probably the best of the lot- those who will always come through in the pinches- those who we will be proud to have graduated with-- those to whom we will go when we need a friend or want a favor. If we thought the third lap was a difficult one, this last one was doubly so. There were many things for everyone to do, and outside activities seemed at times to take all of our time, but we managed to soak enough knowledge into our heads to put 80 per cent of our Senior Scholarship team in the high ten per cent of the county. As we come to the finish of our race, we have set up a record, high enough for any class to have to work to equal, and envious enough to be the goal of any class. At times the running has been bad, the fellow ahead of us has thrown cinders in our face, we have gotten into holes from which we thought we would never get out, but always if we would just dig our spikes in a little deeper, we would come out. Then on the other hand, we all have memories of good times, which we shall never forget. So, we wish to compli- ment the faculty on the remarkable way in which they have controlled their tempers, and wish them many happy returns of the day. L. V. QQ 'ROUND THE YEAR WITH THE JUNIORS' This year, our course, proved to be a successful one. We chose Bill Foster as our capable and active President as Pilot, and under him worked his faithful Me- chanic, Ned Miller, Vice Presidentg and Stewardesses, Betty Clantz, Treasurerg Jean Neidhardt, Secretary, and Jean Mack, Re- porter. As our plane has made a good take oH' to adventure through the years of '35 and '36, our only regrets are that twenty-three members have 'bailed out since our Freshman year, making the total enrollment of sixty. Our first stop landed us right in the center of the Junior and Senior Hamburg- er Fry where we spent a very delightful evening and accepted their invitation to attend their Rabbit supper in November. Our plane soared higher as we were ably represented in the Eisteddfod, Glee Clubs, Orchestra, Operetta and the Scholar- ship Tests. On November the first the plane went into a loop-the-loop which attracted a large crowd to see Hold Everything , only to hold their attention for a second loop-the- loop on November eighth to see Be Your- self . We were forced to land for a two weeks' vacation at Christmas, because of heavy snow and the temperature being the lowest it has been for many years. Sailing through under the flying colors of Blue and Gold proved that we were well represented in Athletics: Volleyball, Baseball, and Basketball. The plane fairly went into a tail spin as both boys' and girls' teams of our class rallied to the top by winning the Interclass Tournament. The girls' team was composed of N. Hov- erman QCaptainJ, L. Rockhold, M. Stelzer, M. Bowersock, L. Carey, and V. Wilkins. The boys' team was composed of R. Miller QCaptainJ, N. Miller, R. Ashton, L. Miller, T. Jones, and V. Sei- bert. We chose Lenna John and Ruby Mewhorter for our class Cheerleaders. We owe our compliments to our teachers who showed their acting' talent in the faculty play, 'tThe Poor Rich . M We made 3 big three Point landing by holding the annual reception in honor of the Seniors ay 15. Now as we glide slowly down from the years of '35 and '36 we place our plane in the hangar and leave it there- until next year when we shall continue our flight as Seniors of '37. D. J. M., '37 Twenty-:me SOPHOMORE JOURNAL President ----- Lavern Shaffer Vice President - Gerald Dicus Secretary-Treasurer Mary Mack Reporter ---- - Doris Fissel On September Il, 1934, seventy-six pupils started their high school careers as Freshmen, destined to be- come the Class of '38 . Under Miss Townsend's excel- lent supervision we spent a very enjoyable year. The next year, on September 2, we enrolled as Sophomores, feeling much more dignified than in the previous year. The census showed sixty-seven, nine having deserted us. We welcomed the Freshmen into our midst by invit- ing them to our weiner roast, which was held September 27 in the high school auditorium. Our girls were successful in defeating the Senior girls in the preliminaries of the Interclass Tournament, but were forced to bow to the noble UD juniors in the finals. Our boys were not so successful, be- ing defeated in the preliminaries by the Junior boys. Although we were represented by only two on the varsity squad, we hope to be represented more extensively next year. Several of our class were on the baseball and volleyball teams. Special notice should be given also to those who were in the High School Boys' Glee Club and the Orchestra. We have enjoyed this year very much under Mr. Hausser's capable supervision and are look- ing forward to our remaining two years. D. F. '38 Tuwvrf y-Iwo A FRESHMAN'S PILGRIMAGE OFFICERS President ----- Earl Mueller Vice President - Bill Reynolds Secretary-Treasurer Betty Goodwin Reporter ---- Jean Augsburgcr The happenings of the school year '35 and 736 stand out clearly in the minds of all the Fresh- men. In September 1935, sixty-four pupils en- rolled as Freshmen. During the school term sev- eral members dropped from our class and one, Evelyn Miller, was taken by death. Our first social activity on September 20, seemed to delight the Seniors as they initiated sixty-four green Freshies and five new teachers. This proved a success so we were allowed a Freshman- Sophomore weiner roast on September 27. During the latter part of the school year our official act as a class was the election of officers for the remalhder Of the term Earl Mueller vas elected as our worthy President, Bill Reynolds, Vice President Betty Goodwin Secretary and Freasurer, and Jean Augsburger, Reporter. The Freshman class was well represented in the High School Orchestra. We were proud of our class teams, even though they were defeated, but we are hoping they With the aid of our capable sponsor Miss Townsend, we hope to have as prosperous a year as J. W. McCleary SCHOOL RATES HIGH IN MUSIC It has been well proven that Spencerville High School is very well represented in the musical field. The Glee Clubs and the Orchestra received excellent ratings at the musical con- tests held at Bluifton and North Baltimore. The school was very capably represented at the solo and ensemble contest held at Ohio Northern University. Evelyn Failor received one of the two superior ratings given for the soprano solo. The string quartet, composed of Dwight Becker, Dean Deniston, Ruth Hays, and Evelyn Failor, received the only excellent rating given for string ensembles. Kathryn Kelly also received an excellent rating for the horn solo. The boys' quartet, composed of Dwight Becker, Albert Sproul, Dean Deniston, and John Cochrung a flute solo by Vaughn Hiltyg trumpet solo by Wesley Sowards, and the girls' sextet composed of Hazel Goodwin, Frances Burnett, Mabel Stelzer, Ema- line Haller, Ruth Hays and Lela Bowen, all received very good ratings. The superior and excellent ratings were eligible to compete in the state contest at Oberlin. The value of meets of this kind is being rapidly realized, and has been proven by the fact that over five hundred high school musicians representing all classes, A, B, C, and CC, participated in this event. Not only do these musicians gain inspiration to improve their own playing or singing ability, but through this friendly rivalry, associations are made, many of which will last for years. Performing before a critical audience is one of the most profitable experiences a musician can have. D. McIntyre Music hath charms to soothe the savage beast . This quotation does not imply the idea that there have been savage beasts to charm in our high school, yet if the occasion had ever demanded it, there is no doubt but that we would have been able to soothe them. The high class of music of the orchestra has been brought about under the capable direction of Mr. McIntyre, who has patiently worked with us. The orchestra, composed of 36 members, has met twice each week throughout the year. The audiences have been very well pleased with the beautiful selections played by the orchestra at various high school entrtainmnts. On Friday, March 27, the orchestra took part in the Allen County Music Festival at the Memorial Hall in Lima, and on Monday, April 6, attended the Northwestern Music Festival at North Baltimore where they received the rating of excellent. Several members also took part in the State Musical at Ada on April 17. Ten members of the orchestra are to be promoted to the higher rank of gradu- ate professionals, leaving their coveted positions as an incentive for the orcehstra of '36 and '37. H. M. G. D. McIntyre The Girls' Glee Club, consisting of fifty-two members, has made a good showing in whatever it has attempted during the year. Much training and pleasure has been obtained in our working together under the leadership cf Mr. McIntyre. On December 133, the club took an active pait in a musical program given by all the musical organizations of the school. By the boys and girls working diligently together, they presented one of the greatest events of the year, the Operetta, The Count and the Coed , which proved a great success. The Glee Club took part in the Musical Festival held at the Memorial Hall in Lima on March 27. Also on April 18, the club took part in the Graded Festival at Bluffton and received the rating of excellent. The Girls' Sextet, composed of Hazel Goodwin. Frances Burnett, Mabel Stelzer, Emaline Haller, Lela Bowen, and Ruth Hays, took part in the state musical, held in Ada on April 17, Other members also took part in the musical. D. McIntyre The Boys' Glee Club did a very fine quality of work this year under the able supervision of Mr. McIntyre. The club was composed of 33 members and met twice each week. The club took part in various programs, and along with the Girls' club presented the very successful operetta, The Count and the Coed . It proved to be one of the best ever given in the school. On March 27th, the boys attended the annual County Music Festival held at the Memorial Hall in Lima. At the State Contest held April 18th in Bluffton, the boys again represented the school, and received the rating of excellent. The Boys' Quartet, composed of Albert Sproul, Dwight Becker, Dean Deniston, and John Cochrun, represented the club at the State Musical held in Ada on April 17th. As we look back over this year we rest assured that it has keen a prosperous one and We hope that next year's Glee Club will carry on in the Isjmme manner. F. . 'JG Thirty-one Thirty-two SPENCERVILLE HIGH SCHOOL MALE QUARTET 0 Albert Sproul Dwight Becker Dean Deniston John Cochrun The quartet is made up of Albert Sproul, first tenor, Dwight Becker, second tenor, Dean Deniston, first bass, and John Cochrun, second bass. Known as the Balladeers this quartet has furnished an example to the Spencerville community of what can be accomplished with diligent practice. These boys as individual vocalists were not outstanding, but working together, they have given their high school and community a good interpretation of the better known quartet harmonies. Four years of singing together has brought about an everlasting companionship among them. They owe much of their success to Miss Mildred Becker, Miss Elinor Hursh, and Mr. C. D. McIntyre who have given of their time to aid and instruct the boys. Numbered among their appearances and accomplishments are: First place at the Allen County High School Eisteddfod held at Elida in 1934. In the State Vocal Contest held at Oberlin in 1934, the quartet was rated excel- lent or second. Early in the fall of 1934 the quartet broadcasted over Station WOW0 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The boys were rated first, superior, at the district vocal and ensemble contest held at Ada in 1935. Again in 1935 the quartet journeyed to Oberlin to the State Contest and this time received a rating of third or very good. On New Years Day, 1936, at the Open Eisteddfod held at Gomer, first prize was won by the Spencerville quartet. In February 1936, the quartet appeared on an amateur program at the Delphos theater as guest artists. ' The boys won first prize at an amateur hour sponsored by the Oddfellows Lodge at Spencerville, Ohio, in March, 1936. This year at the district vocal contest held at Ada, the quartet was not fortunate enough to receive a superior award which would have entitled them to enter the State Contest for a third time, however, they were given a very good rating. The boys have thoroughly enjoyed practicing and singing together and have re- ceived much pleasure from their various trips through the surrounding community and over the state. Informed in advance of their visit, his mother prepares to make a good impression upon the pros- pective daughter-in-law by transforming the household much to the disgust of her husband. Ole Larson, the hired man, is rigged out as the butler while Nora, the hired girl, must play the part of the French maid. Of course the neighbors find out about the strange happenings and much comedy results from their investigations. Well, Bob finally arrives with his bride-to-be and the trouble starts. T almadge Jones STORY OF THE PLAY Leslie Ferris and Beverly Lane are two girls who are employed by Madame Francis, an interior decorator. Madame Francis insists that the two girls live in an apartment soon to be occupied by the Prince and Princess Luverne before they move in. She claims this is necessary for them to absorb the proper atmosphere necessary for decorating it in an artistic manner. Soon after they arrive, Leslie announces that Beverly must stay there alone because she is eloping with Arnold Ford unknown to Madame Francis. Leslie leaves and Beverly is mistaken for the Princess Luverne by a young newspaper reporter, Leslie Prince. Beverly mistakes young Prince for Prince Luverne. Then Mrs. Patricia Ballard who has just moved out insists on moving back in three days. It is impossible to relate in this short space the many uproarious plot developments of this great farce. There is a marked element of suspense running through the entire play and it is never cleared up until the very final curtain. '36 VALUE OF ATHLETICS TO SCHOOL The athletics of Spencer High have always met with marked success which is due not so much to the available material as to the spirit which the students have always manifested. We look back with pride to the mighty basketball, baseball, and volleyball of the past, and with just as much pride we look upon our sports of the present. Our basketball has been very successful during the last few years. The Girls' team having won four cups in two years, the first ever won by the Girls of Spencer I-lgigh., The Boys have not been quite so successful but they have been right up t ere. ' Some very fine teams have been put upon the baseball diamond. There was splendid material for the team and with practice they were put in fairly good shape. The boys have had a very full schedule the last year and hope to win some honors this spring. Altho volleyball has been played but three seasons, we can well be proud of our teams. In the tournament we were successful in putting out some of the best teams in Northwestern Ohio. Interclass teams have been developed in several sports, including basketball, volleyball, and softball. The interest of each class has been aroused and a fine scholastic spirit has developed. Plans have been made to form interclass track teams, which will include pole vaulting, hurdles, broad jump, and running. We are striving to develop interclass athletics to the point that every one will have a chance to gain enjoyment and benefit from playing together. Athletic Banquet The Boys' and Girls' Basketball squads, their coaches, managers, and the High School faculty were delightfully entertained at the Athletic Banquet, April 10, 1936, in the High School Cafeteria. A very delicious three course banquet was served by the Home Economics Class under the direction of Miss Wright. The first course was tomato soup and the second was mashed potatoes, gravy, beans, swiss steak, and head lettuce salad. The last course was very clever in its representation. It consisted of chocolate ice cream in the shape of a basketball and cookies in the shape of gym shoes. At the end of the banquet, Coach Townsend and Coach Shackelford presented the letters to the team members, managers and cheer leaders. After the presenta- tion the teams were taken to Lima for a theater party where they spent a very enjoyable evening. Thirty-nine Seated: Mary Stonehill, H. Goodwin, E. Hayman, R. Hays fCaptainj, E. GIRL ATHLETES GAIN HIGHEST HONORS This year's season proved to be one of the most successful in the history of Spencerville girls. The team was declared champions after defeating all the Allen County League teams without a defeat and then proceeded to the county tournament, again to be victorious and declared county champions. The defense was made up of Mary Stonehill, Edith Hayman, and Hazel Goodwin, who were ably assisted by Martha Stonehill, Annabelle Roberts, and Ruby Mew- horter. The usually impassable zone defense which reached its height at the close of the season, after two years of development, served to stop the opponent's offense. The Spencerville offense consisted of Ruth Hays, Evelyn Failor, and Jean Mack, who were ably assisted by Mildred Metzger, Fern Hoverman, and Emaline Haller. Clever deception, careful signaling and unusually accurate basket shooting insured successful scoring. Speedy passwork was insisted upon throughout both areas at all times. Those whom are leaving us and who will be a great loss to the team are Hays, Goodwin, Hayman, Haller, and Hoverman. However, we are looking forward to next year, hoping to have another successful season. Our manager Betty Rider, who filled her position so capably, will also graduate. Miss Townsend, whom we are greatly indebted to for the fine spirit that pushed the team to the top, entertained at a Dinner and Theater Party in Lima. This being the reward for the team's splendid work and cooperation. We also thank Mr. McCleary for his fine treat and cooperation. OUR RECORD OF 1935-1936 Spencerville Spencerville Union ..... OUR DOINGS ON THE POLISHED COURT Starting with five lettermen, Coach Shackelford had a smooth running team dc- veloped by the time the basketball season got under way. During the year the Bearcats lost but two league games and one non-league game with Delphos Jefferson, after defeating them on the home floor in one of the fastest games of the season. The Bearcats ended with second place in the league and a name of one of the fastest scoring teams Spencerville ever had. During the seventeen games played the Bearcats totaled 562 points to their opponents 383. This was an average of 33 points per game to their opponents 22 points. This made a record of 1.03 points per min- ute of play. Four of the first five had over 100 points each to their credit. In the tournament the Bearcats met their Waterloo in the semifinals when they ran up against a surprise zone defense put up by the Gomer team. The Spencerville team feels that their greatest weakness lay in their ability to locate the basket from the free throw line. The loss of the four veterans, Cochrun, Deniston, Miller, and Townsend, who graduate this year, will be greatly felt, but Coach Shackelford feels that he has fine material developing to take their places. The boys started out in high spirits, winning their first game with Shawnee, I5-6, I5-6, and defeating Piqua in the second game, 15-6, 13-15, 15-6. Then in the semi-finals, they met their first of the two defeats necessary to put them out of the tournament, when they were defeated by Coldwater, 9-15, 9-15, the winners of the tournament. Thus being forced into the losers bracket, the boys again attempted to work back into the finals by defeating Lafayette, 15-3, 15-10. The Bearcats then met Piqua for the second time, but this time losing to them, 3-15, 15-8, 5-15, which made their srcond loss and eliminated them from the tournament.
