WILLIAM H. SPENCER William H. Spencer Mr. William H. Spencer was born in Columbus on September 21, 1857, and attended public schools here. Following his graduation, Mr. Spencer began his long and distinguished career in education as a teacher in Harris County, Georgia. While teaching in Harris County, he met and married Martha Love, a marriage which produced five children. Shortly after his marriage, Mr. Spencer was persuaded to leave Harris County and return to his beloved Columbus as a teacher in the system which educated him. He subsequently rose through the ranks in local public education to a position of consultant, principal, and supervisor. His influence was felt regionally as well as locally. Among the goals for which he strived were extension of the public education experience from nine to twelve years, and full accreditation for local schools. Both goals were accomplished. Mr. Spencer was also very active in community service outside the public schools. He was organist for the St. James A.M.E. Church and Superintendent of the Sunday School. Mr. Spencer was Worship Master of his Masonic Lodge and Treasurer of the State Masonic Lodge. Through his work in the lodge, he was able to establish a foster home for widows and orphans in Americus, Georgia. Following Mr. Spencer's death in 1925, local educators and townspeople thought it only proper that a public school should bear his name. In the fall of 1930, Spencer Junior High School opened its doors to students. 2 FRANKLIN C. DOUGLASS SCHOOL HISTORY D Y N A S T Y Spencer High School has a history of over 50 years of service to the students of this area. The school is named in honor of William H. Spencer who was born and educated in Columbus. After teaching for a time in Harris County, Georgia, Mr. Spencer returned to Columbus where he served the school system as a teacher, a consultant, a principal, and finally a supervisor until his death in 1925. In honor of his many contributions to the education of the students of Columbus, the William H. Spencer High School was formally dedicated on November 29, 1932. The school was made possible by donations from the Rosenwald Founda- tion, Dr. George Foster Peabody, and the Board of Education. That first year in the building on Tenth Avenue there were sixteen teachers and one principal on the staff. The first graduation class consisted of thirty seven students. In later years the school was moved to 1830 Shepherd Drive. Finally, on April 19, 1979, a new building was dedicated as William H. Spencer High School. This new facility at 4340 Victory Drive is a continuing reminder of the community’s admiration and appreciation for the outstanding achievements of Mr. Spencer. The present school contains 50 instructional units as well as an auditorium, a library, a cafeteria, and a gymnasium on almost 70 acres of land at the edge of the Fort Benning Military Reservation. A staff of approximately 70 professional educators oversees the education of up to 1200 students from Muscogee County, Fort Benning, and Chattahoochee County. PHILOSOPHY AND GOAL PHILOSOPHY The curriculum and instructional activities of Spencer High School are guided by the philosophy of teaching the command of fundamental processes and meeting the needs of all students at various levels of achievement. The basic principles of such a philosophy of education include the development of individ- uals to have positive attitudes toward learning, to be contributing members of society, and to be prepared for their academic, social, political, and economic futures. GOAL The goal of Spencer High School is to provide learning experiences that will be meaningful and useful to the students served whether they enter the labor force or pursue post-secondary studies. Objectives are designed to generate the learning activities necessary to accomplish the intentions set forth within the goal statement. o L D S P E N C E R SCHOOL SONG All hail to old Spencer They colors green and gold Stand as a symbol of our love untold. Spencer High School celebrated it’s Homecoming week October 19, through October 23, 1987. Homecoming week is the time when everyone has a little fun, and shows their spirit towards their school. 1 guess we can say that some of us have alot of school spirit because several students participated in the activities scheduled for that week. There were several events occurring for that special week. Tuesday of Homecoming week was “Girls’ Hush Day.” This was the day that girls were not allowed to talk to the boys. This was not very easy for some girls. Norman Holloway was the winner of “Girl Hush Day.” He collected 23 pins. He was also presented with a free game pass. Congratulations, Norman! Wednesday was Twin Day. Several students were participating in this event. There were even some who looked exactly alike. Thursday was “Fifties Day.” People really did go out of their way for this day. Overall, everyone looked great. The most outstanding students in this event were Herman Johnson and O’neal Little. Friday was a combination of “Funeral and Green Gold.” The funeral itself wasn’t all that it should have been, but the people in it did a wonderful job. “Green Gold Day” turned out to be very successful. Actually the whole week of Homecoming was wonderful. Homecoming Week was Great! 6 8 1st Attendant 9 Miss Senior — Terry Johnson 11 13 IO 15 . . . Tracy Barber, Rick Logo, and Williams Burns stood out defensively. Hardaway 35 — Spencer 14. Hardaway scored twice late in the game on a bumbled recovery and a pass interception on to snap Spencer’s winning streak. The win, Spencer’s third in a row, keeps alive Ihe Green- waves’ hopes for a region cham- pionship. Spencer is now 3-1 in 2-AAAA competition and trails league leading Carver by a game. The road ahead for Spencer is a rough one, however, with Hardaway, Baker and Carver standing between the Greenwaves and the region crown. In addition to its match- up with S| e cer, Carver must face Baker and Jordan. S| encer led the Cherokees at halftime 12 0 and then fought off a furious rally by Kendrick in the final period. Downs again did the honors from two yards out with 10:32 remaining in the first half The kick failed and Spencer took a at halftime. By Rick Hudson Staff Writer 146 This was supposed to be Mary Mace’s race. The Spencer High senior was the defending 2-AAAA girls cross country champion and was a heavy favorite to repeat Wednesday at the region meet at Flat Rock Park. For most of the three-mile course, the script went according to expectations as Mace built a comfortable lead. But Mace’s race ended about half a mile short of the finish line. At that point, Mace apparently suc- cumbed to heat exhaustion. As Mace fell to the ground, team- mate Dawn Gossett passed her and eventually won the race with a time of 23 minutes, 7 sec- onds. But Spencer’s girls finished second to Shaw in the team standings. Shaw also edged Spencer for the boys team title, although the Greenwaves again claimed top individual honors with sophomore Tom Cruise tak- ing first at 17:58. 14 in Marielta. In addition, Sherri Jenkins of Columbus and Danci Sullivan of Kendrick also quali- fied because they placed among the top five finishers in the girls race. Yet, Mace’s misfortune stood out beyond anything else. Mace was taken to Martin Army Hospi tal where she was treated and released. Greenwaves coach Greg Hart .said he didn’t think the accident was serious. Mace is still eligible for the state meet because of her team’s finish. She’ll probably be OK for the state meet,” Hart said. “It (re- covery) depends on the person’s condition, but she's in good condi- tion.” Hart said Mace had no history of heat exhaustion. “She was probably the least likely runner out here for this to happen to,” Hart said. “It was really unfortunate. She was ob- viously way out in front.” Gossett said she was happy ] with the victory but said that , Mace’s accident took something away from it. “As I got close to her (Mace), she started losing control of her body,” said Gossett, a sophomore who had never beaten Mace be- fore. “Just before she fell, she turned around and reached for me. She looked really bad. ”1 really felt bad because I couldn’t help her. I had to pass her.” Jenkins finished six seconds behind Gossett. Five of the next eight finishers were from Shawj led by freshmah Latesha Till- man, third at 23:44. The boys race had a differenf sort of drama. Cruise battled Shaw freshman Bobby Gardnei for most of the course before overtaking him about 1,000 yards from the finish line. Gardner finished second at 18:15, followed closely by teammates Chris Sut- cliff and Billy Browne.
