Design No. 601-I THE GREAT WAVE MR. WILLIAM A. SPENEER EREATED THE WAVE WILLIAM H. SPENCER Mr. William H. Spencer was born in Columbus on September 21, 1857, and attended public schools here. Following his graduation, Mr. Spencer began his long and distinguished career in education as a teacher in Harris County, Georgia. While teaching in Harris County, he met and married Martha Love, a marriage which produced five children. Shortly after his marriage, Mr. Spencer was persuaded to leave Harris County and return to his beloved Columbus as a teacher in the system which educated him. He subsequently rose through the ranks in local public education to a position of consultant, principal, and supervisor. His influence was felt regionally as well as locally. Among the goals for which he strived were extension of the public education experience from nine to twelve years, and full accreditation for local schools. Both goals were accomplished. Mr. Spencer was also very active in community service outside the public schools. He was organist for the St. James A.M.E. Church and Superintendent of the Sunday School. Mr. Spencer was Worship Master of his Masonic Lodge and Treasurer of the state Masonic Lodge. Through his work in the lodge, he was able to establish a foster home for widows and orphans in Americus, Georgia. Following Mr. Spencer's death in 1925. local educators and townspeople thought it only proper that a public school should bear his name. In the fall of 1930, Spencer Junior High School opened its doors to students. It is in that same spirit of admiration and appreciation for an outstanding individual that we gather today to dedicate this new facility. 2 SCHOOL HISTORY Spencer High School has a history of over 50 years of service to the students of this area. The school is named in honor of William H. Spencer who was born and educated in Columbus. After teaching for a time in Harris County, Georgia, Mr. Spencer returned to Columbus where he served the school system as a teacher, a consultant, a principal, and finally a supervisor until his death in 1925. In honor of his many contributions to the education of the students of Columbus, the William H. Spencer High School was formally dedicated on November 29, 1932. The school was made possible by donations from the Rosenwald Foundation, Dr. George Foster Peabody, and the Board of Education. That first year in the building on Tenth Avenue there were sixteen teachers and one principal on the staff. The first graduation class consisted of thirty seven students. In later years the school was moved to 1830 Shepherd Drive. Finally, on April 19, 1979, a new building was dedicated as William H. Spencer High School. This new facility at 4340 Victory Drive is a continuing reminder of the community’s admiration and appreciation for the outstanding achievements of Mr. Spencer. The present school contains 50 instructional units as well as an auditori- um, a library, a cafeteria, and a gymnasium on almost 70 acres of land at the edge of the Fort Benning Military Reservation. A staff of approximately 70 professional educators oversees the education of up to 1200 students from Muscogee County, Fort Benning, and Chattahoochee County. PHILOSOPHY AND GOAL PHILOSOPHY The curriculum and instructional activities of Spencer High School are guided by the philosophy of teaching the command of fundamental processes and meeting the needs of all students at various levels of achievement. The basic principles of such a philosophy of education include the development of individuals to have positive attitudes toward learning, to be contributing members of society, and to be pre- pared for their academic, social, political, and economic futures. KEEPS THE WAVE fl F L 0 fl T fl N Q T fl E W fl V E WAVES GOAL The goal of Spencer High School is to provide learning experiences that will be meaningful and useful to the students served whether they enter the labor force or pursue post-secondary studies. Objectives are designed to generate the learning activities necessary to accomplish the intentions set forth within the goal statement. 0 N RICK MEINTQSfl - T0WANIDA KEY MISS GREENWAVE MR. IM SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Steady improvement after recovering from early-sea- son injuries marked the 1986-87 Greenwave football team. The highlights of the season were back-to-back victories over highly regarded Kendrick and Hardaway and a hard fought loss to the reigning champions. The Carver Tigers”. SHINING WAVE Elton Owens (OT) made first team All Bi-City, and Keith Gardiner, along with linedbacker. Tukey McGee, was named to the second team. GAMES Spencer 7 - Smith Station 20 Despite Randall Asburry’s 66 yard TD run, the Greenwave lost their opening game. Several Key players were injured during the game. Spencer 6 — Valley 38 A crippled Spencer team traveled to Fairfax. Ala., only to lose to the “Valley Rams.” The “Rams” rated 3 in Alabama. Maurice Davis scored for Spencer on a pass from Keith Gardiner. Spencer 0 - Manchester 27 Spencer lost a hard fought game at Doughboy Stadi- um to the always powerful “Blue Devils.” Zach Porch and Tukey McGee stood-out for the Wave. Spencer 12 - Columbus 27 Columbus scored two touchdowns late to defeat the Wave in Spencer's first game. Randy Fuller was the offensive sparkplug. Spencer 34 - Shaw 7 Keith Gardner. Ricky Logo and Barron Gardner led Spencer to its first Victory of the season. Eddie Kirk was lost for the season in this game as injuries contin- ued to plague the Greenwave. Spencer 14 — Jordan 17 The Red Jackets kicked a last second field goal to beat the Greenwave and ruined Spencer’s hopes for a comeback victory Darren Hauck. Jeff McGee and Lawerence Barber sparked a strong defensive effort. Spencer 8 - Kendrick 7 Powerful Kendrick fell victim to the Greenwave in the homecoming game. Great defense led by Tukey McGee, Terry Dickerson and Anthony Young and the passing combo of Keith Gardner to Barron Gardner “did-in the “Cherokees.” Spencer 19 — Hardaway 7 The “bull-like running of Ricky Logo and tremen- dous defense gave Spencer a glorious win over the top-rated Hardaway. Spencer 0 - Baker 14 Two long passes led Baker to victory in a game that was much closer than the score indicates. Spencer 14 — Carver 21 A late field goal and two offensive turnovers allowed the Region Champions, the “Carver Tigers” to defeat the Wave. Keith Gardner, Elton Owens and Ricky Logo on offense and Tukey McGee, Anthony Young and Zack Porch on defense turned in excellent perfor- mances for Spencer. Coach Frank Matthews Mark Turner Jeff Branham Spencer Making Waves C art c-tf MccHfews Greenware Resurgence Forces Teams to Contend By Guerry Clegg Staff Writer When the Spencer Greenwaves lost to Jordan three weeks ago, it looked like they were headed for another dismal year. Instead, Spencer responded with back-to-back upsets of Kendrick and Hardaway. The Green- waves may not be Region 2-AAAA contenders, but now they must be con- tended with. Spencer is 3-5 with games against Baker (Friday night) and Carver left to play. A win in either of those games would be a marked improvement over last year’s 2-8 record. But Spencer coach Frank Matthews isn’t sur- prised at his team’s resurgence. He felt in presea- son the Greenwaves could be .500. But a rash of injuries contributed to a slow start. “We’re playing like we’re capable of playing,’’ Matthews said. “The kids have done well because we were at a point where personnel was as low as it could get.” Fullback Ricky Logo and tailback Larry Dukes were the key injuries. And their losses affected the defense. Anthony Dickerson and Maurice Davis alternated at tail- back. When Dukes returned, Dickerson was moved to comerback and Davis to linebacker. Also, Randy Fuller was moved from wide re- ceiver to safety and William Burns became a starter at defensive end. “We didn’t think he would play this year,” Matthews said. “But he has made the plays. With him at one end and Logo at the other we contain them pretty good. And Tukey McGee is the best middle linebacker in the city in my opinion.” The offense has steadily improved. Logo, a 6-foot- 4, 249-pounder, was slowed the first three games with a strained hamstring. He rushed for 119 yards against Hardaway giving him 310 yards in the last four games. “He’s coming along, said Matthews. We knew Ricky can be a bull of a runner.” Senior quarterback Keith Gardner was also a key player in the victories. Gardner scored two touch- downs against Hardaway, the first on fourth-and- goal from the 9. Against Kendrick Gardner com- pleted 9-of-19 passes for 103 yards. He had runs of 20 and 7 yards and passed of 10 and 15 on the touch- down drive. “Gardner’s made play after play,” Matthews said. “He’s a good quarterback in that he’s mope accurate with his passes than he was last year.” Matthews speaks cautiously about the last two, games. Overconfidence can erase momentum in a hurry. “I just hope,” he said, ”we can handle a couple of wins. Spencer Rallies To Upset Kendrick By Kathy Glarar Correspondent Spencer quarterback Keith Gardner approached his Green- waves’ crucial two-point conver- sion with a simple philosophy. “No matter what it took, we had to get it in, said Gardner. Gardner and the Greenwaves had come too far in their quest for an upset victory over Region 2-AAAA leader Kendrick. Spencer drove 80 yards in 10 plays to pull within a point at 7-0 with 3:48 to play. The Green- waves decided to go for the two-point conversion and the vic- tory. Gardner, a threat to run or pass, was given the option by coach Frank Matthews to choose the best route. Gardner picked a quick slant pass to Barron Gardner (no relation) for the conversion and an 8-7 Spencer win. “Keith had the option to throw or run and he read it just right,” said Matthews. “He made a move that really opened that pass up. Keith Gardner and fullback Ricky Logo led the Greenwaves down the field for their winning drive. Gardner gained 27 yard PREPS rushing and passed for 14 more, while Logo gained 20 yards on two carries. Kendrick made the game’s final moments suspenseful. The Cherokees began their final drive on their own 15, when Marcus Hudson’s knee touched the ground on his kickoff return. Quarterback Mike Nail, who fumbled five times in the game and lost four, quickly moved the Cherokees to midfield with 2:39 remaining. On first down from midfield, Nail scrambled to the Spencer 33. Then the Greenwaves’ defense stiffened and the Kendrick rally was stopped. William Burns sacked Nail for a seven-yard loss. A penalty and a dropped pass set up fourth-and-27 from the Spencer 45. Nail gained six yards, Kendrick turned the ball over on downs and the Spencer celebra- tion began. Kendrick coach Charlie Dow- dell was visibly upset after the game. We just looked terrible,” said Dowdell. “I really don’t want to talk about it.” By RutMlI Henderton Correspondent Spencer’s defense intercepted three passes and returned a fum- ble 35 yards for a touchdown and Ricky The Logo-Motive” Logo gained 114 yards on 21 carries as the Greenwaves defeated the Hardaway Hawks 11M Friday night at Kinnett Stadium. We played real good, said Spencer coach Frank Matthews. He (Logo) was great when we needed him, he makes our of- fense go.” The biggest defensive series of the night for Spencer came at the end of the first half with the score tied 6-6. Hardaway had a first-and-goa! at the 3. Travis Gaskin gained 2 yards to the 1, but the Hawks advanced no farther. After two incomplete passes, quarterback Jeff Haley was stopped on fourth and inches. Our player said he was in (the end zone),” Harda- way coach John Drew said. It appeared to us that he was in.” In the first quarter, the Hawks covered 80 yards on just three plays. Runs by Gaskin and Chris Egins moved the ball to the 30-yard line. On the next play, the Hawks caught Spencer’s defen- sive ends pinching, allowing Gas- kin to get outside and go 70 yards for the touchdown. Gaskin had 174 yards rushing in the first half and finished the night with 196. Spencer scored in each of the remaining quarters. In the sec- ond, Spencer drove 43 yards for a touchdown. Gardner scored on a 14-yard run as he faked a pitch to Logo and was able to thread his way to the end zone. In the third quarter, Hardaway had the ball on its 35, and Haley tried to run an option to the left. He was hit as he pitched and Earl Clark picked up the ball, and he pitched to Zac Porch for the score. Gardner scored on an 8-yard run with time running out, following a 34-yard interception return by Rodney Fuller. 99 Touchdown! WAVE! Fifteen Yards. SON! WAY TO GO, WAVE!! Just Sailing Along! Jordan led the Greenwaves, ranked No. 6 in Class AAAA, 52-48 at halftime. But Spencer opened the second half with eight straight points and never trailed again. Rodney Harrell and Lorenzo Thomas spent much of the sec- ond quarter in foul trouble. That was the big difference, according to Spencer coach Speedy Gil- strap. We run the press a lot better with Rodney and Lorenzo in there, Gilstrap said. “They’re so quick. That loosens David and Daiyl up to do what they do, which is take it to the hole.” Ransom took it there, and usually found Harrison waiting. Harrison scored 30 points from the field, most of which came down low in the paint. Ransom’s aggressive play sent him to the free throw line fre- quently in the first half. He made seven of seven free throw and scored 17 of his points in the first half. “He and David are bona fide horses,” Gilstrap said. Gilstrap said he warned his team about Jordan’s extremely aggressive style. “I told them it would be a fun game, that we could very well scored 90 points and not win,” Gilstrap said. Spencer improved to 5-0 and thus could crack the top five when the new polls are released Friday. Jordan dropped to 3-3. The Red Jackets had played well until their last game against Harda- way. They played well at times against Spencer. “We’re not capable right now of putting together four good quarters,” said Jordan coach Mike Adcock. We had a (third) quarter like we did against Hard- away. (Spencer is) too good to have a quarter like that.” By Larry CirtrfuM Ledi Spencer's Randy Fuller shoots inside in the Greenwaves’ 95-80 win over Jordan. ■REGION lACWAMPS 1 122 Spencer Has Spencer High boys’ basketball coach Speedy Gilstrap sat at the foot of the bleachers the other night, reviewing another of his team's 15 straight victories, when a college coach stopped by for a visit. The coach, in town on a recruiting trip, kept shaking his head and smiling. He made some small talk, then shook his head, smiled again and told Gilstrap, “Coach, you’re GOOD.” GILSTRAP NODDED, then smiled a Cheshire cat’s grin while thanking the coach. Yes, Gilstrap’s actions spoke without words, we are. Gilstrap’s Greenwavesare very, VERY good, clearly the best team in Columbus right now and the No. 3 Class AAAA team in the state. That’s pretty heady stuff for a team from a town with a crummy statewide reputation for high school basketball, too heady in the eyes of some. No matter — Gilstrap’s Greenwaves can do more than just play. They are talented, yet plenty of teams in the city are talented. They are well-coached, yet plenty of teams in the city are well-coached. WHAT THEY have is something that separates the talented teams, the well-coached teams from each other. Some call it chemistry. At Spencer, it’s best called personality. “They’re like me,” said Gilstrap, in his fourth year at Spencer. Saturday mornings (after games), they wake up smiling.” THE GREENWAVES can smile because they’re relentless in their effort. In Friday’s 75-70 victory at Carver in the city’s most significant game thus far, the difference between the Greenwaves and the Tigers was not talent, nor coaching, but four quarters of effort. The Greenwaves can also smile because they have a certain charm about themselves, charm provided by a pair of guards, seniors Rodney Harrell and Daryl Ransom, who play as if they’re wearing the old comedy and tragedy masks. Harrell is the catalyst, the one with the emotion, with just enough hotdog in him and only a squirt of mustard. His statistics Friday night — six steals, nine assists, six turnovers, 19 points — mirror his personality and style of play: dynamic. RANSOM IS the stoic, the one with the poker-face, with a jump shot that practically leaps from a textbook. His statistics Friday night — three steals, one assist, three turnovers, 21 points — mirror his personality: unruffled. If the Greenwaves were a house, Ransom would be the living room and Harrell the play room. And senior forward David Harrison would be the foundation. An honor student, who’s entertaining ideas about attending places such as Cornell and the Air Force Academy, LInrrienn niwar fKa fTrAantuatrac guard him. If they don’t, he scores 30.” AND IF they do, no problem, there’s always the defensive pressure, keyed by Harrell and Ransom, that grabs opponents by the neck and throttles them. “They’re quick, they hustle,” Gilstrap said of a team that also can pour another 3-5 pure athletes on the floor to maintain the heat. We have fun at practice. They're competitive people.” And they at last give the city of Columbus a boys’ team to be reckoned with statewide. “We're enjoying it,” Gilstrap said. We’re trying to keep it in the proper perspective.” GILSTRAP’S FIRST Spencer team, a flamboyant bunch with double-figure hat sizes that earned Gilstrap a less-than-desirable reputation among his peers, could not and would not have kept it in 124 Spencer Sets Up Face Off Hy Russell Henderson • '' H HwlOf tf I In Spencer High Greenwaves used full court pressure lo take a 7! 49 victory over the Columbus High blue Devils Tuesday at S|M’iicer. For the past ten years I have had the pleasure of riding the wave of education here at Spencer High School. Several faculty members have been with me throughout this span of time, and this time could not have been more right for work and service at Spencer High for me personally. When you think of riding a wave, several images come into focus: an object fluttering in the breeze or in a storm; being moved or brandished to and fro; being bent from side to side; or being on top of a crest or swell on the surface of the ocean. In life, these images will become reality and you must make a choice. You must choose whether you wish to ride the wave of a calm breeze and just pass through life or whether you may wish to challenge the waves of life's storms which means that you would ask questions, take a position, stand up for and be ready to defend at all cost the principles you believe in, yet, be willing to work with others to reach a compromise on significant issues. As you are moved or brandished to and fro in life's experiences, always remember that attitudes that cannot be changed will, more than likely, break the spirit and effectiveness of the person. Be ready to experience life, use the past and the present to prepare for an ever changing future. Be flexible. To be pushed from side to side is o.k.; to fail to take a stand is a disaster. Your character will continue to be tested as you move through this society. Ideas and ideals, principles and attitudes, as well as social and economic conditions will constantly move you from side to side. You must be able to judge conditions and make confident decisions about your position on significant and important Issues. Daily obstacles will appear as crests and swells. You must be able to decide if the reward will justify the effort to negotiate the peaks and valleys before you. I believe that you should not allow the highest of the crests nor the valleys between the crests to be a deterrent to your life's goals. You must be willing to go the last mile, do the last tasks, and give totally of yourself in order to say, My life has been meaningful because I gave my very best. Best wishes in all of your endeavors. PAULA Celestine D. Hoskins Associate Editor This year has been a tough one for the small yearbook staff and Mrs. Gayden. It has been quite difficult trying to put the materials together in an organized fashion; however, the book has finally been completed, and we are very elated in spite of the frustrations and difficulties. We would like to thank our parents, our teachers, our friends and anyone else who rendered services to the yearbook staff. We desire to give special thanks to Mr. McCormick, Mrs. Farmer, Mr. Roberts, Mr. Manzi, Mrs. Richmond, Mrs. Crawford, Coach Gerald Turner, Coach Howard, and Phil Harding. Above all we thank God, “For his merciful kindness is great toward us and the truth of the Lord endureth forever.” I would especially like to thank my mother, Ann Flournoy, my sister, Micikell A. Perry and my father, James C. Flournoy, for their help and support. Celestine D. Hoskins Associate Editor 190 Paula Mullen Editor-in-Chief Again, my fellow-Spencerians, it is time to thank God for enabling us to complete an important job — that of putting together this year’s Spencerian. It's all over now! We have done our very best to include all the things we feel that you deemed important to students in our school program. This, of course, is the finished product The Spencerian 1986-87. We would like to thank you for your support and services. To Mr. Wilbert Gayden, we extend a heartfelt thanks for his time, trips to the post office and the stops at Wendy’s. To the faculty and friends, we extend a warm thanks for excusing us some days and for supporting our efforts. We would like to close with the following: “If a task is once begun, Never leave it till its’ done Be the labor great or small, Do it well or not at all.” May God bless!
