Our economy and the unemployment rate are very real areas of concern for each of us. Everything that the people of the United States have believed in and worked for during the past 200 years seems to be collapsing around us. In order to help bring an end to the discontent and chaotic conditions that prevail, all people of this great country are going to have to pull to- gether with the spirit on which this country was begun. Education is essential for any country to survive and progress. This is as true today as it was when this country was founded. At Spencer we are very proud of the educational opportunities provided for our students. All students should accept the challenge of developing to their fullest potential. They should strive to learn all that they can in order to control their own destiny, academically, politically, and socially. I challenge you to be aware of the many courses--academic, vocational, and enrichment--that are offered to you and of the many clubs and organizations to which you may belong. By becoming involved in as many of these as possible, you will broaden your horizon and will be ready for whatever challenge you are presented with in the future. The future is in your hands. Be prepared for it. Learning together is having Mrs. Humber talk with stu- dents about ‘the facts of life’? Learning together is having Coach Works give advice to students who need it. Teachers and students at Spencer High School know that education is a continu- ous process and that learning together, the sharing of knowledge, is fundamental. Therefore, at work and at play, students and teachers learn together. Learning together is having the band march down the field in a dignified manner. LEARNING TOGETHER Learning together is helping each other prepare to jump off the wall while hanging on a rope. Learning together is having Mrs. Banaszak show a group of students how to throw a football. Learning together is sitting at a table with classmates draw- ing and painting pictures. Learning Together 5 HANDS ON TRAINING Make me one too! Up, Up. and away! Looking Good! All students will not be able to excel academi- cally. Consequently, hands-on training needs to be a part of every high school program. Spencer High School offers vocational training in a vari- ety of areas. 6 Hands On Training Get it right! With the help of caring, but demanding teachers, I’ve managed to make good grades over the last few years. Being nominated for an English Award and making the Principal's List have been the academic highlights of my past years here. On the athletic field, with the help of very special coaches and teammates. I’ve grown in both mind and body. With their support, I was named Player of the week twice. Most Valuable Back twice, Offensive Player of the Year, and All Bi-City my Junior and Senior years. Most of all, through the love and support of my family and friends. I’ve achieved and grown on and off the field, and for that I am truly grateful. President; Daryl Brown, Vice-President; Cleve Cleveland, Vice-President; Bill Braski, Treasure; Tim Douglas, Secretary. Newly organized this year, the Key Club has become one of the most active and worthwhile organizations at Spencer. Its major objective is to facilitate a pride in Spencer High that is second to none. In an effort to do that, projects such as the homeroom basketball tournament, the ping-pong competition, and Valentine carnation sale were sponsored. Our community project — dubbed “Buddy Program” was very successful. It involved about twenty-five under- privileged children from various communities, with about the same number of Key Club members, who brought them lunch and went to the park. The standards set by Key Club International helps our local organization to be sharp and competitive through out the entire school year. 1st ROW L-R: Kerry Crowe, Kendall Iverson. Anthony Lewis. We have talked over beams of light and met for pizza; gone to the United States Capitol and Smithsonian, to Columbus College and to Georgia Tech. We learn to develop pictures and get along better with others; we learn about electrochemistry and cloning. We participate in the tutoring program and record books for those who can’t read well enough. We are 77 members strong, the largest science club in the city, county and this region of the state. We are very interested in bettering our education, in improving ourselves and finding new ways to look at our surroundings. This we do. We are interested in enjoying ourselves. The 1982 Cross Country teams’ season was one of the most successful seasons in Spencer’s recent athletic history. The Greenwave Harriers led by seniors Joel Reed and Gilbert Canino, defeated every public school in Columbus, won both sub-region and the regional championships, and 5th place in the state meet held in Atlanta. Joel and Gilbert alternated first place finishes and both made the All-Bi-City first Team. Andrew Burr and Mike Quispe made the second team, giving Spencer four positions on the 10 man team. Dan McFarland was the other senior on the team, and the underclassmen that gave us so much depth were Gary Thomas, Andy McDonald, Tuan Clay, Paul Franco, and Dave Wallace. If these runners continue to work hard, our 1983 season should be as successful as the 1982 season. Spencer’s female Harriers, with only one experienced runner, finished third in the sub-region meet. All runners were underclassmen and promised themselves they would be as successful next year as the boys were this year. 168 Boys Record Girls Record Win Loss Win Loss 15-3 3 1st Sub-region 1st Region 10 3rd Sub-region 4 Coach Steve Hicks 1982 Spencer Cross Country Is! row L to R Kneeling Liza Schneider. It was just a great group of wrestlers that went out there on the mat and gave 100% effort. A coaches job is really easy with young men like this to work with. 1 always say that a coach is no better than his players. With the type of wrestlers that I had I guess that would make me a great coach. We are the bi-city champions. To go undefeated as a team calls for a supreme effort from everybody. The wrestlers gave everything they could give in order to achieve this 7-0 record. To the senior wrestlers 1 would like to say, thank you for your leadership, time, and effort that you put in this team. You will always be remembered by me, the team, and the school. You will always be welcome at SHS. Congratulations to the SHS Wrestling Team 82-83 Bi-City Champs, Coach Ogletree Greenwave!!! Lee Wilson Every once in a while an opportunity comes along for the older generation to take a step back in time and relive that portion of life that lingers longer and louder than the rest. It was this single thought that prompted me to accept the nomination for president of your Athletic Booster Club for the 82-83 school year. Its been 30 years since I left the athletic field of my Alma Mata in Texas, but I can remember those blessed few years better than anything in my life. I know it’s difficult for you to understand now how good and important these few short years will be for your life. Only time can explain that to you. There were times during the heat of battle in Vietnam that I was sure I was living my last day on earth and my thoughts would drift quickly back to my family and to my days in Athletic competition where I guess I really learned the most important rules of life: develop and maintain standards, practice as hard as I can then, play harder, (cheating in practice will come back to haunt you when the chips are down), develop and maintain a positive attitude and finally, play the game with determination, dignity and play to win. I did not realize it then, but those few short guidelines instilled in me by my high school coaches and teachers formed the cornerstone for my life as an adult. If I could somehow pass these simple truths to you so you can benefit from them as I have, I would feel like I have fulfilled my obligation to you. At the risk of becoming melo-dramatic, I would just like to say thank you for allowing me to participate with you in a small way this year. Your athletic accomplishments have been numerous, and I am so proud of you for them. You have been an inspiration to me, for which I am eternally grateful. “GO GETEM GREENWAVE” President of Booster Club (U . dOUeJ 191 Col. L. Spencer High for years. He departed this life June. 1982. His favorite poem “IF” by Rudyard Kipling is found on the next page. Mr. McCall — on the job for the Spencer People With the departure of Mr. McCall, the Spencer people lost a very important person. The entire Spencer family will miss Mr. McCall. 218 Troy McCall if If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you. But make allowances for their doubting, too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting. Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies. Or being hated, don’t give way to hating. And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream — and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim. If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken. And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss. And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!” If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue. Or walk with kings — nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you. If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run. Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it. And — which is more — you’ll be a Man, my son! 219 — Rudyard Kipling Mrs. Brown taught at all three Spencer High School locations. We the students of Spencer High School of nineteen hundred and eighty-three dedicate this yearbook to you Mrs. Janie M. Brown in recog- nition of and tribute to your having made mani- fest an influence for good on the scholarly, cul- tural, religious, and social dimensions of Spen- cer High School of Columbus, Georgia. 220 “Those who succeed are the efficient few. They are the few who have the ambition and will power to develop themselves.” H.N. Casson Janie Mae Richardson Brown, a teacher at Spencer High School for thirty-three years, is one of the efficient few. She was born in Hartsville, South Carolina; the oldest chid of the late Luther and Mozelle Richardson. At a very early age it was evident that efficiency, ambition, and the will power to develop were among her personal characteristics. She graduated from Butler High School, Hartsville, South Carolina, number one in her class. Her past high school educational achievements include the Bachelor of Science Degree from Benedict College, South Carolina; graduate studies at Columbia University, Temple University, Tuskegee Institute, Albany State College; and the Master of Education Degree from Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia. “Working with students in their formative years,” has been one of Mrs. Brown’s greatest desires; a desire that has enabled her to develop within the minds of young people the ambition and will power to develop themselves. At Spencer High School she taught the subjects of French, Biology, General Science and served as Science Department chairperson for many years. During that time the lives of many young people were inspired. Mrs. Brown has made unlimited contributions to the Columbus, Georgia community, her church and family. Mr. S. Leon Brown is her very devoted husband and they have two adorable children. Crystal and Darryl. During her tenure at Spencer High School Mrs. Brown has written and delivered many inspirational addresses and poems. Faculty members as well as students will always remember the following example excerpts from a most eloquent speech delivered during an American Education Week Celebration: “Education is like Ford, it gives us a better idea; Education is like Coca Cola, it’s the real thing; Education is like Standard, we expect more from it and we get it; Education is like General Electric, it lights our path; Education is like Hallmark cards, it lets us send our very best; Education is like a slow poke sucker, it lasts a long, long time.” “Lastly, I leave with the students of Spencer High School these words of advise taken from quotes, along with a few others in this paper from the very distinquished orator and renowned Attorney Patricia A. Russell. They are the soap box operas that you are familiar with, so As the World Turns, we hope that you may truly enjoy Love of Life; but, understandably, sometimes you may feel Young and Restless or harbor the belief that in this fractured fragmented, bruised and ailing world you may feel as if you are standing at The Edge of Night, facing your own Secret Storm; but please know that these are the Days of Our Lives and you cannot seek an escape hatch and act as if you are in Another World; that right now at this very moment, you must accept the reality that you have but One Life to Live; Please know that it shall be your heritage, education, determination, dedication, beliefs and commitments that will enable you to Search for Tomorrow with A Guiding Light.” “The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind him in other men the conviction and the will to carry on.” W. Lippmann With Mrs. Brown the final test is happening every day! Good luck! Mrs. Brown. 221 by Mrs. Gloria Moffet Chairperson, Science Dept. Spencer High School
