spencer high school 1977 spen cerian volume 45 vr r . ■SWB! as our paws cross. . . jv ' student Ijie venturers alcpg (he path • if' ' 40 '' «sse ' , ' _ 2. fi O ,AJ| P paths to progressam 4 . • administration paths to participation . . .136 organizations? paths toglor . . 170 sports providers along the path , ... 196 business i976,C ARTER vs. FORD I sue 5 carter 1 $ Vir ' •' FORD 62 : -C some paths are determined by fate in spite of our endeavors and personal goals. however, though our travels may wander, f ie pace we set will be our own. n IS 18 campus life brings together the feeling of togetherness moves in all we do, whether it is get- ting down at a pep rally or hitting the mark in rifle com- petition. this green- wave spirit, which is often channeled into us by others, leads us to attempt to excel in all activi- ties. the ringing of the first bell signals the beginning of an active day. although we each go in differ- ent directions, the spirit of the green- waves remains with- in us. participation is the key to understanding ourselves as well as others, being'together in activities gives us a chance to grow, thus, spencer students more frequently in this year of 76-77 turned to full and active participation in such activities as the newspaper staff, the newly formed debate club, sex- ually integrated physical edu- cation classes, the yearbook staff, rote, and many other clubs. 23 we are all winners. . . 24 but if we had to choose one special person to represent us, it would be regina crittenden. regina is what spencer stands for . . . potential . . . achieve- ment . . . and humility, reg- ina has participated and con- tributed to many organizations, both in and out of school, she served as secretary of the junior class, as a cheerleader for three years, and as secretary of fbla. this is regina 's fourth year at spencer; and as she graduates, she will leave traces of herself to be followed through the years by future spencerians. miss green wa ve regina crittenden 1 first runner-up annette dyer second runner-up ivonne font miss senior karen mcnealy miss sophomore gerralyn russell . . . each year spencer carries on the tradi- tional selection of miss greenwave and her court, where girls from each class are selected as representatives, this selection is a true honor for those seven lucky girls, after the fri- day night coronation, these girls proudly rep- resented spencer at the homecoming football game. beauty at its best. . . 28 the green waves began cheering the team to victory by burying columbus high school at the homecoming pep rally, this pep rally also gave greenwaves a chance to see the happenings around spencer high school. after the posting of the colors, the drill team and majorettes each performed numbers with the band, the varsity and junior varsity cheer- leaders were intro- duced and led the crowd in cheering, the chorus per- formed three musical numbers. several seniors engaged in the grand finale, a funeral for the blue devils. 29 green- waves fired . . . although the homecoming tradi- tions were carried out in a unique man- ner, the anxieties and excitement remained the same. preparation activities for homecoming started off with the pep rally, leading into the selection of miss greenwave and her court this year the new queen was honored with a homecoming dance in the school gym. various clubs and organizations formed a caravan to the game, tension mounted the week of the game, creating joyful confusion; but the final outcome was victory, as spencer truly buried columbus high with a 14-13 victory. 31 spencer is making the scene around columbus. in your wildest no softies in this game . . . powder puff football SENIORS: Front Row: Brenda Jennings, Kitty Karnes, Tammy Beard; Middle Row: Julie Bullock, Cheryl Thomas, Thelma Whit- taker, Lisa Chapman, Wilda Byrd, Edna Karnes, Becky Morgan, Lavern Taylor, Charlene Jones; Back Row: Cindy Williams, Danette Hicks, Pat Ketterer, Angie Wilson, Pat Shelton, Pam Green, Gloria Thomas, Teresa Boren, Leslie Tucker, Linda Shelling; Not Pictured: Sharon Hardy and Darneta Jones. FRESHMEN: Back Row: Theresa West, Gillian Smith, Sandra Nelson, Brenda Hall, Joni Gardner, Janet Norwood, Nina Hill, Verna Whittaker; Front Row: Nadine Alexander, Cynthia Givens, Katrina Coleman, Katrina Chester, Gaby Polk, Angie Tatum, Verenda Walker, Vivian Puryear. 35 survival of the fittest the freshmen and sophomores played first, ending in a victory for the freshmen 20-0. the seniors and juniors battled it out in a rough, brawling contest to end in a win for the juniors of 6-0. next, it was the freshmen and the juniors; and the freshmen, using superior skills and teamwork, won 6-0. 36 new talents. the drama class this year has been an especially active group, perhaps because of the presence of malik purley, the art- ist-in-residence the first half of this year, these candids show drama students participating in drama exercises, acting in their performance of impromptu. also seen is one shot from malik's per- formance of pantomimes. 37 march of dimes the march of dimes campaign is a universal attempt to fight birth defects, the money goes to the build- ing of hospitals and research centers, as well as paying for braces, opera- tions and a qualified staff, students participated in the balloon sales, the walk-a-thon; and students are the ones who make up their own ’’special pro- jects.” one of spencer’s special pro- jects was quiet day, when if anyone talked during class he had to donate money to m.o.d. almost everyone participates in m.o.d.; for, at the balloon sale, spencer collected $309.00. the reason that m.o.d. is so popular is through the help of special people, the 1977 spencerian would like to recognize the advisors - mrs. bradley, ms. edge, ms. hay wood; and student leaders angie wilson and debra hood. 38 birth defects are forever unless you help 39 Albert Duncan (Spencer High School), Tim Karanovich (Muscogee County), Annette Dyer (Muscogee County). s.a.i.l. students 40 finalist national merit scholarship for outstanding black students albert duncan society of distinguished american high school students Back Row: Mike Fry.
