Lindsey Transition is the key word that describes Spencer High School during the 19 1-72 school year as the racial composition of staff and students changed tremendously. Thus the class of 1972 will be recorded in the annuals of Spencer as the first in- tegrated graduation class. Our student body during this transitional year appears to have the attributes of enthusiasm, of vitality and of stamina that characterize youth. It is wonderful because you will need these things. You will need them as you learn; as you prepare to lead our nation in the years to come. The problems and challenges of tomorrow can only be met by the young people of today who are endowed with the wonder- ful attributes of youth. The senior class of 1972 is well qualified to meet these opportunities and responsibilities. ASSISTANTS TO THE ADMINISTRATION GLENN WALLACE He works behind the scene but his presence is greatly felt. It was surely only yesterday that our quest for knowledge began. The years have passed swiftly. Our awareness of things past and present has increased our desire to be a part of “what’s happening.” The challenges of the 70’s are great. Although there is much that is right and beautiful in our world, there is also much that, if we can change it, will lift mankind to glorious heights of human existence. Such are our thoughts as this edition of the Spencerian goes to press. —David Hill Editor-in-Chief CHAO: Student Concerns ► of the ' twOs [TEEN-AGERS] USK MORE IQUESTIONS I THE FIGHT TO SAVE THE FREE WORLD ■ lUjyyjui, ......... Instead of the usual four years of being together as a class we can boast of only one. When we finally realized that integration in the Muscogee County School District was indeed a fact each of us experienced mixed emotions. Since change is often a painful procedure some of us expected great suf- fering. The communications media had had a field day ever since the first signs of integration had appeared on the horizon. Some of us were really “uptight” — but many of us had previously been enrolled in integrated schools and “feared no evil.” As the school year progressed that “old Spencer spirit” seemed to be working overtime. Slowly but surely we began to feel at home. New friend- ships were formed and old ones renewed. We worked together, played together and studied together. WE BECAME A CLASS. Walking from the fire while my cat stares inquisitly. He and I both know its over, but caring too much to let go. The suns love rays stream through the curtains onto an empty room. Rushing in to care for lost feelings. I don’t know—just an unspoken thing. I can be in the old familiar room— feeling warm in front of myself— thinking, over old and lost times, again. Laughing . . . with my sad eyes. —Darlene Jones WHAT WAS OF A FOOTPRINT You erased him from my mind Like a footprint washed off the sand by the sea. Let us sit back and watch the ocean’s tide and drink its water in our loneliness of time. But didn’t someone once tell me that people keep walking on the sand? The waves keep rolling in, For you left a footprint, only to be washed away. —Darlene Jones WICKED grey clouds blow tauntingly at the sky, trees sway to kiss the ground— I feel like flying up to meet the darkened sky, to play tauntingly with the wind. Swoop down to kiss the ground and back up again. Feeling wicked. —Darlene Jones UNITY AND PEACE To unite we must have peace for this is what the U.N. seeks. Worldwide peace all over the land should be established among every man. c Life is short and so are the days . . . we should unite and create peace in many ways. There is no time for prejudices and hate. We must try to conquer the word called fate. Unity is man getting together where peace is to last forever where discrimination will be a word of the past . . . as we progress to obtain what will last. Ruth McKnight Picture in your mind’s eye . . . a willow tree with a beautiful scene surrounding it Just like a willow tree that stands alone, I’ve been this way since I was born. No one really cares about me. I’m just like that old willow tree. I weep, mourn, and cry. Everybody always pass me by. Each day as I go through life, I face many hardships and strife. Will I ever be fancy free and not be compared to a willow tree? Only I can find my way, Hoping to conquer the obstacles day after day. Willow tree you’re not alone. I’ve been this way since I was born. Ruth McKnight 29 Cover designer Felix Brooks Shcrnita Stallings. Photography Assistant and Mrs. Hudson, Advisor get it together for another day of shooting. It will never pass into nothingness!” The contribution of the artist is beauty. The artist has appointed himself to make man, more aware of life, to startle him with new experiences, and to deepen his sensitivity. Through art man’s consciousness is made aware of a higher, more enduring morality which is not bound by cultural differences, or creeds. A work of art is the embodiment of truth-truth, which is the en- during morality, which draws its life-blood from beauty. Tom Bryant Instructor 36 BUSINESS Anna Douglas Typing-Shorthand Doris Reid Business-V.O.T. Kenneth Evans Business The Business Department of Spencer High School seeks to develop an understanding of the present-day need for well-trained workers, and to develop an appreciation of the necessity for making plans for a career in which each individual can make his contribution to per- sonal, social civic, and economic well-being. Margaret Gardner takes her short- hand seriously. 37 Typing students Diane Porter, Della Jones and Cynthia Reynolds know that accuracy is as important as speed. COSMETOLOGY Cosmetology refers to the scientific study and prac- tice of beauty culture. Cosmetology as a professional career offers many opportunities and rewards to those students who receive training, have developed an, attractive appearance and a charming personality and who observe professional ethics. Motto: “Beauty is our Business” Helen Lindsey Instructor A Wet set is the project of Elder Clay. His client is classmate Kathy Gipe. 38 Shirley Henning and Tommy Wages explore the wealth of materials on job information avail- able to students in Distributive Education. DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION Creates among students a desire for good leader- ship through part time work, related instruction and many other D.E. Activities. Ralph Barnhart Instructor A desire for work experiences motivates many students to enroll in this course. 39 DRIVER EDUCATION “And leave the driving to us” B. C. Carswell Instructor 40 The driver education course means lower insurance rates for the parents of these students. Brenda Steward Charlie Walker PHYSICAL EDUCATION “To lose one’s health renders science null, art inglorious, strength unavailing, wealth useless, and eloquence powerless.” From dawn to dusk, five days a week, the Spencer High gymnasium and field are a kaleido- scope of colorful activities. Whether practicing for a special event or just having fun, a group of spirited girls and boys can always be found there. During gym periods, the Physical Education Department, in recognizing the need for individual as well as group development provides physical fitness exercises and team activities. Jim Whitt David Adkins Joyce Hammonds FOREIGN LANGUAGES “Every language is a temple in which the soul of those who speak it is enshrined.” Language is the result of an evolutionary process which began when primitive man uttered wounds in re- sponse to an emotion which he experienced. Prejudice and bigotry can be eliminated and our desire for peace strengthened with a study of the langu- ages of other peoples who then cease to be a blank mass and become human beings in whom we have an interest. The great necessity for deeper confidence among all people of the world in order to achieve lasting peace makes this discipline an invaluable acquaintance with a foreign language end with high school days or should it continue throughout our entire life-time, we gain in both knowledge and in understanding. Frances Wimsatt Spanish HOMEMAKING Education for the responsibilities of homemaking is now regarded as a vital part of the total school program for youth and adults in Georgia. Women of tomorrow must be prepared to serve effectively in their communities, in the professions and in industries, but without detriment to good home and fam- ily life which has been so important to our democratic way of life in America. LIBRARY EDUCATION The library provides a balanced book collec- tion and audiovisual materials for students and teachers of Spencer. It also provides reading guid- ance and helps students develop skill in the use of hooks and other library resources. Jeffrey Dillon Librarian Junior Library Assistants Mary L. Jackson Assistant Librarian Stimulates and guides pupils in all phases of their reading so that they may find increasing enjoy- ment and satisfaction and may grow in critical judgment and ap- preciation. MATHEMATICS “Hie study of mathematics, like the Nile, begins in minuteness, but ends in magnificence.” From the infinitesimal to the infinite, mathematics encompasses the entire range of the human mind. Its scope includes the earth and the sea, the world, the universe, and all that lies beyond. The most exact of the sciences, mathematics defines that which we can barely understand. Concepts so minute that we cannot comprehend them, and ideas so im- mense that we cannot imagine them, are not beyond the range of mathematics. The study of this science reaps its own rewards in the discipline of the mind. Estelle B. Stroy Jon Willis Douglas Norris Diane Koart Victor McDaniel Pamela Coffield Wendle McKenzie Barbara Durvin 46 Lillian S. Edmonds Vocal Music MUSIC Music is a means of emotional expression. The performer expresses his feeling through it, and in turn produces a feeling in his audience. In a chorus, voices harmonize to create an effect the instruments of an orchestra are arranged for the same purpose. Rather than conveying a concrete image, music stimulates the emotions to receive an intangible message. The feelings produced are often too vague to describe in words, yet can be strong enough to overwhelm us. Through creative performance of merely through listening intelli- gently to other musicians, we may find a new dimension in life. We can lose ourselves in another world-one separate from the physical, a world which explores our deepest longings in a language comprehen- sible to every time and every people. THE CHORUS 48 ENGLISH “Oh world 1 cannot hold thee close enough.” Through the guidance of Spencer High School’s distinguished English Department, we have received a picture of life with its many facets. The goal of our teachers was not only to teach us basic grammar and correct expression of thoughts and ideas but to present to us a mass of great literary works written by men and women who had grasped the significance in life in many times and places and who wished to pass some of their impressions and beliefs on to posterity. However, this was not all. We were not only to study the work of others but to create our own. We wrote papers, and our teachers corrected them and offered suggestions so that we could learn from our mistakes. We made oral reports and under our teachers guidance strove to speak distinctly and clearly. The English Department has been responsible for directing and helping us in the fields of literature, reading, and speech. English is the tool subject in the curriculum. It is due to these excellent teachers that we have received a strong foundation for all future work and that we are able to burst forth from ourselves and to go on to higher endeavors in our diversified careers ahead. TTie mission of the Junior Division, Reserve Officers’ Training Program is to inculcate habits of orderliness and precision, to instill discipline and thereby respect for constituted authority, to develop patriotism, and to encourage a high sense of per- sonal honor and deportment. Cole Physical Science “The creaking of the tented sky The ticking of Eternity . . The myriad wonders of the universe were thought beyond our reach, its breadth too wide, its depths, gaping caverns. Slowly, we were led through formerly closed doors to encounter new experi- ences. We painfully pieced together our small bits of knowledge and were elated when we saw the pieces fit. Our gleaming mosaic formed a unified whole; we were proud of our creation. Studying science for us involved a constant search for truth. Each new achievement laid the basis for further conquests. Our new understanding gave us confidence and spurred us on. Students explore the possibilities of scientific research. Physics ary A. Vickery Physical Science Biology 52 Margaret Powell Social Studies Parker Mackey World Geography SOCIAL STUDIES “History hath triumphed over time.” Never has there been a greater need to apply our past to our present. The world moves with an urgency which necessitates personal attention and involvement. Through the study of civilization, we have come to under- stand that men must learn how to live peace fully with one another. We are the first generation of the nuclear age; never before has man had power to destroy himself. Our pre- decessors have not been able to harness the great force which has led us to the brink of destruction. It is we who have inherited this situation and must overcome it. Most of us will not be leaders, but the goal of our social studies education is to make us worthwhile par- ticipants in the great stream of history. This education has enlightened us about the world system of conflicting ideologies and economics. It has attempted to give us a broader comprehension of democracy and its functions. It has instilled within us the spirit of our times. Leo Staley U.S. History Walter Haralson Social Studies Anita Walters Government Walter Cook- government Linda Skinner—U.S. History A YEAR OF CONTROVERSY ONE STUDENT’S OPINION The main controversy of forced bussing is the word “forced.” It is human nature to resent forced action of any kind and American nature to resent forced government action. The only catch to this growing stream of resentment, flow- ing through Columbus is that integration should have been initiated long ago — without any force — by the people themselves. It was once said that change evolved in three different stages. A man first changes because he is forced to. Then, this man changes — not because he wants to — but because he knows the change is right. Finally, man changes because he wants to change. It’s a pity that Columbus is still in the first stage. Many would argue that it is not integration they object to, but the inconvenience of bussing. I think everyone will agree that bussing is not a convenient answer. However, I have heard only criticism tearing down the solution and no voices offering a better answer in its place. Integration has been long overdue, not only in Columbus, but in America. What other way is there to harmony, but through understanding. And how can blacks and whites understand each other — and learn from each other — unless they are exposed to one another? America was not based on the idea of privileged white classes. It was founded on the idea of equal opportunities and regard for all men — regardless of color. If bussing is the only way to penetrate the color cliques in our society, then the end justifies the means. Then the goal of inte- gration justifies the inconvenience of bussing. PLEASE COME MONDAY! The new structure rises behind the old courthouse which has since been torn down. “I do not believe the greatest threat to our future is from bombs or guided missiles. I don’t think our civilization will die that way. I think it will die when we no longer care. Arnold Toynbee has pointed out that 19 of 21 civilizations have died from within and not by conquest from without. There were no bands playing and flags waving when these civilizations decayed. It happened slowly, in the quiet and the dark when no one was aware.” — Lawrence M. What happened to those days when men did good? Are people so full of pride for themself. They would stick their brother away on a shelf? All the shooting and killing, when will it stop? Or is it such a hard thing to drop? Well, who are we to judge a man? To tell him whether or not he can When we are his equal in every way And live just like him from day to day Regardless of whether he’s white or black Who cares whether or not he lives in a shack? Why must the world be so full of hate Well, we must go on at any rate So many lives are lived in great haste To me it seems like such a waste Yes, we have a problem on our hands One that’s destroying our great lands People are tampering it like a toy Only to reconstruct and destroy We’ve got to stop—think—get it right Or we’re gonna lose a good thing overnight TIME We are not promised another day or hour Time blooms, blossoms, and withers just like a flower. Time is like a clock, it ticks on away You can’t change today’s dream for a dream of yesterday. You cannot plan or say what you are going to do tomorrow. Who knows what time can bring to us in a few seconds, minutes, or hours. Make wise use of time while you can. May I suggest that you help your fellowman? —Jeff Garrison J.W. THE REAL BEAUTY Only the flyer, Understands the beauty of his skies. Only the diver. Understands the beauty of his seas. Only the singer. Understands the beauty of his songs. Only the lover, Understands the beauty of his love. Only I can, Understand the beauty of my road. —Jeff Garrison “STAR-SPANGLED GRAVE” AND AS I PAUSED . .. And as I sat there, alone, in that untangled field; with nothing more to do than to think of you. I looked at the still, silent grass, and I thought if there was no beauty in living, I would show you the beauty of life and if you found no love in this world, I would give you love. And then, as I sat there, watching the sun break through and shine on the tall wheat, I paused; and looked up to the sheltering sky, and I thought; if in this world of pain and violence, you found no peace, I would give you tranquility. And if in this world you find no love, I will give you love. I am an American, Proud and brave. But I won’t be Brave in a grave. I won’t fight. Tomorrow or today. Only John Wayne, Was made that way. —Jeff Garrison I LIVED TO SEE TOMORROW In 1941 a father had a son. And in 1944 the father went to war. He was no more. In 1951 a father had a son. And in 1954 the father went to war. He was no more. In 1961 a father had a son. And in 1964 the father went to war. He was no more. TO DINK foggy nights city lights crickets humming endlessly don’t it seem to pull you down don’t it make you want to frown school zones mobile homes sad ole moon shining down on me don’t it seem to pull you down don’t it make you want to frown if it wasn’t so late I’d call you on the phone because just to hear you speak brings me to my feet—just talking to you makes me smile my blues away. And if you would I’d take you away and sing your love songs all the day it wouldn’t take long before we both smiled our blues away. —Bob Rumer —Bill Terry ln 1971 ] had a son. Army ROTC only takes up about five hours a week of your time while you re in high school. NO BIG THING. Second, it gives you an edge on the other guys. In areas like management, organization and leadership. NO BIG THING. Third, it pays one full credit a year during your high school tour of duty. NO BIG THING. Fourth, it lets you serve your country as an Army Officer, when you finish college R.O.T.C. NO BIG THING. But the big thing is that little things add up. The education, the background, the experience. Right now you may think Army ROTC will look small on your resume. But a lot of employers don't think so. And with jobs getting tough- er to come by, a little thing like JROTC can start to look pretty big on your high school transcript. Army JROTC — The more you look at it, the better it looks.
