These things we must always remember— The value of time The success of perseverance The pleasure of working The dignity of simplicity The worth of character The power of kindness The influence of example The obligation of duty The wisdom of economy The virtue of patience The improvement of talent The joy of originating —Marshall Field The above sentiments can quite accurately be a description of the gentleman who has held the reins of Spencer High School since 1945. He has had many diversified and worthwhile experiences throughout his adult life as a leader in educational, religious, civic, and fraternal activities. This educator has been principal of Fifth Avenue School, principal and supervisor in Athens, Georgia and Dean of Instruction at Boggs Academy in Keysville, Georgia. Since being the renowned leader of Spencer, he has exemplified his profound ability to orate dy- namically and guide effectively. Honors have come to him as a past President of the Georgia col- ored Parents Association, Treasurer of this organization and Treasurer of Georgia Teachers and Education Association. He is Bausileus of the Phi Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Ruling Elder of Bethsalem Presbyterian Church, and National Chairman of the Colored Parents and Teachers Association. Mr. DuVaul was named “Man of the Tear” for the year 1966. Our principal is the father of two sons, Wesley and Thomas and one grandson, Michael Sean, and the husband of Mrs. Ganelle DuVaul, a teacher. We, the Seniors of the Class of 1967, dedicate our SPENCERIAN to Mr. Charles Wesley DuVaul. We do this not only because of his success as the “Fountainhead,” but also be- cause he represents so well the symbol for which Spencer High School stands—Excellence. He patiently guided and directed us when many of our tasks seemed insurmountable. Each passing day revealed him to be our inspiration. Our hopes, our ideals, and our dreams have been nurtured by him and his faith in us has given us courage to face the future, its successes and its failures. Mr. Du Vaul had us to realize that anything we desired to accomplish could be done. Because his interest and concern never wavered, we feel that his faith has to be justified. For this we shall always lovingly call him— THE FOUNTAINHEAD 17

ADAGIO ’67 Tune: “The Halls of Ivy’ THE HALLS OF SPENCER Oh, we love the halls of Spencer, that surround us here today And we will not forget tho’ we be far, far away. To the hallow’d Halls of Spencer ev’ry voice will bid farewell And shimmer off in twilight like the old vesper bell. One day a hush will fall The footsteps of us all Will echo down the hall and disappear But as we sadly start Our journeys far apart A part of every heart will linger here In the sacred Halls of Spencer, where we’ve lived and learned to know That thro’ the years we’ll see you in the sweet after glow. Oh, we love the Halls of Spencer, And to thee we’ll ere be true And as we leave these sacred halls, we’ll ne’er forget you, Juniors e’er be humble servants to this place we love so dear And proudly take our places, with true hearts be sincere. And we will ne’er forget The goals that we have set To make our lives the pride of Spencer High Dear Alma Mater true Our hearts will be with you In words we cannot find to say good-bye To these sacred Halls of Spencer, As we journey on, you’ll know That we will not forget you, for we do love you so. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦» » ♦ 18
