It is our profound endeavor to reveal, THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, a movie production of our days spent here. For four years, we have watched our Producers and Directors, careful craftsmen, focus their cameras on a bigger and better Spencer --a Spencer that we have helped to mold. We know, however, that when the spotlight is focused on a nation, state or institution, only a small portion of its facets are illuminated. The projection of our magnificent institution is presented for your perusal with the idea that only fond memories of this year might be forever at your fingertips. As you while away the hours with your copy of this pictorial and editorial memory book, all Spencerians should feel proud that our school has made tremendous strides, academically, aesthetically, and athletically throughout its 37 year history. Spencer's past is our prideful heritage and represent the touchstones of the future. We, the Class of 1967, would like to contribute to this heritage through the production of THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD. 5 GREATEST THE MOMENT OF TR UTH 12 TOMORROW, THE WORLD THEME SONG All hail! To old Spencer Thy colors green and gold Stand as a symbol Of our love untold A ll hail! To old Spencer To thee we’ll e’er be true To watch o’er and keep you All hail! All hail! All hail! To old Spencer Thy beauty do we see Here on the highway Strength and peace shall be All hail! To old Spencer We’ll sing our praise to thee In trials and victory All hail! All hail! All hail! To old Spencer Thy sons and daughters true Stand now as ever To fight and die for you All hail! To old Spencer We pledge our faith anew To guard and protect you All hail! All hail! SOUND TRACK Spencer High School, we adore thee And thy Green and Gold— We are grateful and devoted— Thy loving cares unfold— Loyal to thee, we shall ever be! Loyal to thee, we shall ever be! ’Mid the grandeur of our campus Glows our sacred shrine—our all,— So symbolic of our excellence Behind each classic wall— Matchless Beauty, praise we everlastingly! Matchless Beauty, praise we everlastingly! Our alumni have excelled so In every field and way! This inspires true Spencerians To lead all schools, we pray! School of great fame, we’ll e’er revere thy name! School of great fame, we’ll e’er revere thy name! These things we must always remember— The value of time The success of perseverance The pleasure of working The dignity of simplicity The worth of character The power of kindness The influence of example The obligation of duty The wisdom of economy The virtue of patience The improvement of talent The joy of originating —Marshall Field The above sentiments can quite accurately be a description of the gentleman who has held the reins of Spencer High School since 1945. He has had many diversified and worthwhile experiences throughout his adult life as a leader in educational, religious, civic, and fraternal activities. This educator has been principal of Fifth Avenue School, principal and supervisor in Athens, Georgia and Dean of Instruction at Boggs Academy in Keysville, Georgia. Since being the renowned leader of Spencer, he has exemplified his profound ability to orate dy- namically and guide effectively. Honors have come to him as a past President of the Georgia col- ored Parents Association, Treasurer of this organization and Treasurer of Georgia Teachers and Education Association. He is Bausileus of the Phi Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Ruling Elder of Bethsalem Presbyterian Church, and National Chairman of the Colored Parents and Teachers Association. Mr. DuVaul was named “Man of the Tear” for the year 1966. Our principal is the father of two sons, Wesley and Thomas and one grandson, Michael Sean, and the husband of Mrs. Ganelle DuVaul, a teacher. We, the Seniors of the Class of 1967, dedicate our SPENCERIAN to Mr. Charles Wesley DuVaul. We do this not only because of his success as the “Fountainhead,” but also be- cause he represents so well the symbol for which Spencer High School stands—Excellence. He patiently guided and directed us when many of our tasks seemed insurmountable. Each passing day revealed him to be our inspiration. Our hopes, our ideals, and our dreams have been nurtured by him and his faith in us has given us courage to face the future, its successes and its failures. Mr. Du Vaul had us to realize that anything we desired to accomplish could be done. Because his interest and concern never wavered, we feel that his faith has to be justified. For this we shall always lovingly call him— THE FOUNTAINHEAD 17 ADAGIO ’67 Tune: “The Halls of Ivy’ THE HALLS OF SPENCER Oh, we love the halls of Spencer, that surround us here today And we will not forget tho’ we be far, far away. To the hallow’d Halls of Spencer ev’ry voice will bid farewell And shimmer off in twilight like the old vesper bell. One day a hush will fall The footsteps of us all Will echo down the hall and disappear But as we sadly start Our journeys far apart A part of every heart will linger here In the sacred Halls of Spencer, where we’ve lived and learned to know That thro’ the years we’ll see you in the sweet after glow. Oh, we love the Halls of Spencer, And to thee we’ll ere be true And as we leave these sacred halls, we’ll ne’er forget you, Juniors e’er be humble servants to this place we love so dear And proudly take our places, with true hearts be sincere. And we will ne’er forget The goals that we have set To make our lives the pride of Spencer High Dear Alma Mater true Our hearts will be with you In words we cannot find to say good-bye To these sacred Halls of Spencer, As we journey on, you’ll know That we will not forget you, for we do love you so. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ 18 ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥+ ¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥ + +¥¥¥¥++¥ ¥¥¥¥¥ ++++++++++++ +++++ + +++ ++++++ +++ ++ LAMENT OF THE STARS A wondrous look into the past, being truly sincere Reveals Spencer High as a place we love so dear. To us, she is a statue to be cherished forever. Though we may journey far, well forget her never. No, we didn’t realize in an earlier grade The efforts she exhibited, the prices she paid, To refine our minds and make our hearts true, But, she never complained, as others would do. Mere words cannot express our gratitude to you And as time passes by, dear Alma Mater true, This voice of loyalty will remain with us In this sacred place of love do we substantiate our trust. You’ve given us hope that will come soon no more Your arms protect us now as many times before. Only now do we realize that this is the last, For, soon our secure world will be a part of the past. Though we must soon depart, it is not farewell, For soon we’ll be back with stories to tell Of the goals we’ve accomplished, the fame we’ve made, That assure us of the worthiness of the prices we paid. You’ll always be a part of us, Dear Spencer High, And as the year of’67 slowly passes by Our Senior Class will ere remain true in faith, hope and love For the school that God has blessed from heaven above. —Gladys Elizabeth Ashe 19 LOOK IN ANY WINDOW I SAW WHAT YOU DID THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW 20 A TASTE OF HONEY 21 SPENCER’S MOUNTAIN THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE Dr. William H. CHARLES WESLEY DUVAUL Principal of the WILLIAM HENRY SPENCER HIGH SCHOOL The Eternal Drama has not been complete and the players are gradually making this most heart rending presentation before a vast audience which we call the population of the world. To my mind this is one of the greatest stories ever told. It is so realistic and filled with both tragedy, love and comedy. This is who Shakespeare said, All the World is a stage, And all the men and women merely players. To you, Class of 1967, this is your time to present your story, and I am sure that you feel that it is the greatest story ever told. As you tell your story you will also contribute to the story of Spencer High School. Thirty seven years ago the Board of Education and the citizens of Columbus had a dream. This dream was the establishment of a high school to supplant the outmoded one at Fifth Avenue. Through the scientific maneuvering of the skillful engineers, the old mud hole on Tenth Avenue and Eighth Street, a most modern structure soon raised its head and was dedicated as the William Henry Spencer High School. Coming events cast their shadows before. This institution served as an inspiration to many hundred boys and girls who have completed the ninth grade at Fifth Avenue and dis- continued school. These young people came trooping back when Spencer opened her doors, and soon its influence was felt throughout Muscogee County. Thirty seven years have passed and Spencer High School can boast of thousands of young men and women who have passed through these sacred halls. They have matriculated at some of the most outstanding colleges and universities in America as well as abroad. If you would call the roll of our Alumni, they would answer from all corners of the world. They would answer from all fields. They would present credentials from every college of any note and would give proof of their work as doctors, nurses, teachers, principals, college professors, professional football players, therapists, business men and women, ministers, politicians, lawyers, dentists, and thousands of other professions. Class of 1967, you have a rich heritage. Those who have preceded you have blazed a path which is thirty years long. You are now ready to join this long Grey Line , which reaches from Spencer to the ends of the earth. As you leave these sacred halls, I too shall leave, but I shall still watch you as you march down the halls of time and as you take your places of honor and distinction in One World . Go on, Oh, Spencer, proud and bold Set for yourself bigger and better goals. Thy name shall live, and we shall give Love and protection Oh, Green and Gold As thy bright emblems we shall behold. 25 Charles W. DuVaul SECOND IN COMMAND Mr. Wadsworth W. Gentry Dear Seniors, The fundamental element in education is self-activity. Schools and teachers can set the stage, furnish materials and opportunities, motivate and inspire, direct and guide; but the individual must do the learning. In this changing and dynamic age, education should be a continuous and integrating process. To this end one must acquire tools, basic information, methods, and stimuli that will carry him forward as a learner. He must also get the habit of wide partici- pation in educational activities and experiences beyond his required courses. The opportunities for continuous and integrated self-education are numerous. Li- braries, an abundance of literature, ease of travel and communation, releases of modern research, institutions and increased leisure--all these lend themselves to this fuller development of the self. We congratulate, therefore, those of you who have had the opportunity of completing four years of high school for initiating this process that is so largely dominated by self-activity. Wadsworth W. POSEY As you depart from the hallowed halls of Spencer High School, please accept my warm and heartfelt congratulations for having reached this important milestone in your lives. It is my sincere hope that you have taken advantage of every opportunity to improve yourselves--personally, academically and socially. Let me impress upon you the importance of continuing to set new goals for yourselves. Believe that a man’s reach should exceed his grasp. Believe that there is wisdom in the advice that people are willing to help those who help themselves. Believe, hope, pray and work unceasingly toward the fulfillment of your dreams. Your high school days are over and you, too must move on. The future is before you. You are standing on the threshold of unprecedented progress in every field of human endeavor. My final words to you are, Become involved in the New Frontiers. Resolve to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. How can I, prolific seniors, say farewell to thee when departure of this nature becomes such sweet sorrow? How can I when the very thought of your venturing into a perplexed society makes your adventure that of uncertainty? How am I to bid you adieu when my serenity fails me as mere thoughts of your having to set sail on a restless sea of time confront me? Sadly I must! Having to say goodbye to such illuminant, unforgettable per- sonalities who are labeled as jubilant, prolific seniors of '67 puts me to an unwarrantable imposition. It should not be so, but skepticism invades my fragile psyche as I see you taking flight into a world of dubiety; then why should I hasten to render pensive fare- well? Indeed I must! You who have enhanced our sacred walls with enchantment at times and on the other hand, with disillusions that inspired you to gain new insight and immense fortitude, finally reinvigorates me to utter, FAREWELL TO THEE, IMMORTAL SOULS. Yours truly. MRS. HELEN B. SCOTT MR. THOMAS L. WORKS Helen B. Scott To the Class of 1967, I extend my sincere congratulations and best wishes. In a very short time you will be joining the ranks of hundreds of Spencer High School Graduates who are making out- standing contributions throughout our state and nation. As you depart from these halls may you be ever mindful of the high ideals for which your institution stands. Now finally, members of the graduating class, I wish for you a rewarding future, a bright future, a satisfying life of dedicated service. Yours truly, Thomas L. Works 52 MANY As members of the 1967 graduating class of Spencer High School, I extend to you my sincere congratulations. Now that you have reached your graduation day, do not feel that your work has been completed, not by any means! You are just beginning! Now it is up to you to go forth and reach whatever heights you desire. We here at Spencer have put forth special efforts to prepare you to meet those heights. Consequently, we believe you possess educational skills needed to succeed in your chosen fields of endeavor. As you leave I would like to say, Step forth, Class of 1967, with confidence and determination of what is expected of you. Resolve to keep your records stainless and your ideals lofty. With these lofty ideals as your guide it is with God’s speed I bid you Goodbye. fours truly, Oscar Stanback MR. OSCAR STANBACK Seniors, To achieve what the world calls success a person must attend to business and keep in advance of the times. The person who reaches the top is the one who is not content with doing just what is required of him. He does more. Everyone of you should make up your minds that if you expect to succeed you must be conscientious, dependable, courageous, and ingenious. You will succeed best when you put the restless, anxious side of affairs out of mind, and allow the restful side to live in your thoughts. Yours truly, MRS. MARTHA J. PHILLIPS Martha J. Phillips For you of the senior class, your graduation will be, of course, a unique and momentous event in itself--as it would be in any year, as it has been for all your predecessors. But since it comes in a year which is to some degree special and particular in the history of Spencer, the event may have a double significance for you; and in that light we who have been so deeply concerned with your education, who will follow your future careers with deep interest and so much pride, may express a few hopes for you. I hope you will maintain not only the amiable but the essential virtue of an open mind. I hope that, together with and open mind, you will bring to your work and your daily life the same sense of purpose and dedication that has characterized so many of the graduates of Spencer, men and women who have been widely honored not only for their services, to people and their communities. I will be, therefore, whatever you wish for me to be. In this way, the name of Spencer shall perpetuate itself through you, its alumni--for you, in essence and personification, are Spencer. Yours truly, l iff Mary V. Ford MISS MARY V. FORD 53 MANY There is but one straight road to success, and that is merit. The individuals who are successful are those who are useful. Find your place, work toward your goal with a great determi- nation and enjoy doing whatever you have to do. When skill and love work hand in hand, you can truly expect a masterpiece. The world is blessed most by those persons who do things, and not by those who merely talk about doing. Sincerely, MRS. EVELYN B. POWELL Evelyn B. Powell I read recently where a group of scientists here in the United States has found the genes that cause the pigmentation of a person's skin. That leads me to believe that we are only a few days away from being able to order a person in any shade of color that the heart desires. I read in the newspaper this morning where a group of scientists in a foreign country has predicted that by the year 2,000 A.D. man will live to be 300 years old, sleep one hour a night and not get tired, and take all of his food from a synthetic pill. What does this mean to you, the class of 1967? It means that the next 37 years will bring forth much change. The world 37 years from now will not be the same world as we know it today. I admonish you, if you do not already know how, go out and learn how to learn. Learn how to learn and practice learning, for it will be the greatest asset in your lifetime. Yours truly, MR. S. LEON BROWN S. Leon Brown MRS. EARLENEH. McCOY Dear Seniors, The most important commodity in the image of Spencer High School is excellence in scholarship. The quest for knowledge is an on going and never ending activity. A second most important educational factor in our image is in the area of personal growth. It is important to have respect for the dignity of others and responsibility toward your fellowman. A sense of self-discipline establishes regard for rules and laws. Self-control enables one to obey rules and regulations. Ethical codes discourage dishonesty. I endorse the class of 1967 with full confidence and complete faith in its ability to carry the image of Spencer High School with distinction. Yours truly, £ aAjb-srjL Earlene McCoy 54 LOVES MRS. EMMA S. SMITH To the Class of 1967: There can be no question that the world today is undergoing momentous technological and sociological changes. New knowledge is being acquired in all fields at a tremendous rate. With this new knowledge comes changes to which successful and happy persons must be able to adjust. The acquiring of all the training you can get and the fullest development of your own talents will go a long way toward your making this adjustment. I urge each of you, as you seek your niche in our dynamic society to take advantage of every opportunity to build up the base you have received here at Spencer. As you leave may I wish for each of you success and happiness in years to come. Yours truly, Dear Seniors, As you leave our Alma Mater, I would like for you to take cognizance of the symbol enblazened throughout this yearbook, Excelsior. You are going forth into a world that needs excellence --excellence that you have in your youth, your spirit, and your training. Each of you may be of more influence to humanity than you can now know. Everything that mankind has ever accomplished has begun as one person's idea--an idea for which one was willing to work. Take with you the thought that I wish each and every graduate only the best for a very happy and successful life ahead. As you take your place in our Great Society remember these sentiments. Do your work--not just your work and no more, but a little more for the lavishing's sake, that little more for which is worth all the rest. And if you suffer as you must, and if you doubt as you must, do your work. Put your heart into it and the sky will clear. Then out of your very doubt and suffering will be born the supreme joy of life. Sincerely yours, CfynA i - aJ YatvmL' Emma S. Smith MRS. CONSTANCE B. WARD Constance B. Ward ONCE UPON A TIME Mr. J. R. Being both compas- sionate and productive, she finds time to comply with the wishes of others besides maintaining an umblemished academic record. P.T.A. Exceptionally efficient in typing and mimeograph- ing, Evelyn has volunteered her services to the Spencer Chapter of the Parents- Teachers Association spon- taneously. Her ability, along with her readiness to work and faithfulness to a cause, makes her the irre- vocable choice of many when in need of a reliable person. SPORTS This young athlete, most versatile in the field of sports, has displayed supe- riority continuously in football, basketball, track and baseball. Tall, good looking, Bobby believes that A sportman's whole delight is in the pursuit. During his four years at Spencer, he has put forth an unparalleled ef- fort to gain fame for the Mighty Greenwaves. 89 BACHELOR 90 Joann Whittlesey IN PARADISE Shirley Me Gown Valerie Bradley 91 Gloria Mariner 92 Terra and John Mollie and Ronnie 93 flashback: THE MANY FACES OF Teaching psychology. He has given us an inspiration for school spirit, a desire for school pride and has promoted school loyalty. With these traits we have been true Spencerians. Altheia Joett Butler FRESHMAN For twenty-one years, Spencer High has been DuVaul Country. During my two years here, I have seen Mr. C. W. DuVaul as a president over the Spencerians. Though the road was not always smooth he led us triumphantly. His strictness is balanced by his sense of humor. He is a dynamic and influential speaker and responsible leader. His loyalty has been shown in many ways. But all good things must come to an end and so comes the end of our principal's term. Two years from now if you hear that the sophomore class graduated over 300, you will know that it was especially for Mr. C. W. DuVaul. Larry Greene SOPHOMORE If ever any thing has been worthy of immulation, the leadership of Mr. Charles W. DuVaul ranks number one on the list. For the unequalled efforts and abilities he has displayed, our principal is certainly worthy of great respect. Mr. DuVaul is an executionist. He is quite able to put into effect the many wonderful ideas which he originates. He without a doubt has influenced for the better, the lives of thousands of students of whom he has come in contact. Gifted as a speaker, Mr. Charles W. DuVaul will leave an indelible mark on this institution. A mark which shall be to all Spencerians, old and new, a Andrew Henderson calling for higher accomplishments. JUNIOR As a member of the Spencer family for a period of four years, I have learned much about our leader. A great man is known for his deeds, and so it is with our leader, Mr. Charles Wesley DuVaul. This marvelous individual has shown traits of leadership that are possessed by no ordinary man. It is highly commendable and very unique for a person to have been capable of dealing with others as our principal has done. Mr. DuVaul is the type of person who demands respect as a result of his manners and principles. He is looked upon by students and other individuals as a symbolic, superior being. No institution has ever had a more worthy and devoted leader. Spencer High School and I will forever cherish and benefit from the teaching Gladys e. Some gloom must fall, if only for a day As the sunshine and rain which He provides Surely God knows best. His Will is our way For things like this aren't ours to decide. Yes, God protects His little ones From things of harm or places unsure And when excess trouble or pain comes He puts her to rest in Heaven secure. MRS. BLANCHE BALDWIN SHE She was the world to our beloved school, She did her part to uphold all our rules. She travelled far to make our name worthwhile, She did her job, and always with a smile, She was the heart of Spencers' P.T.A. She was the light to guide us every day, Though it makes us sad to know that she has gone We'll always say, we'll love her. She has left us now to take on greater fame, She earned her bows and her famous name, She took with her all our love and prayers, That she would succeed and climb the highest stairs. We already know that we miss her so, But we also know that God called her to go Though it makes us sad to know that she has gone We'll always say, we'll love her. 187 SCENARIO STAFF _ Editor-in-Chief Gloria Wilson Layout Editor dpCVlu Anc i- Cynthia Alexander Copy Editor Millicent Reid Layout Editor Editor-in-Chief Cynthia Alexander Gloria Wilson SPENCERIAN Staff and Advisor As seniors we hold the cameras that not only neipea us to gain knowledge but also taught us to accept responsibility. Before we tuck our cameras away and forget these memorable years, the SPENCERIAN Staff would like to give sincere thanks to Mrs. Constance B. Ward for her guidance, understanding and complete cooperation in our publication of the 1967 SPENCERIAN. We thank Mrs. Earlene McCoy who assisted in many ways and Mr. Oscar Stanback for his aid with the advertising staff. Next, we appreciate Mrs. Audrey Posey for her help with the typing staff. Without their help, the SPENCERIAN would not have been possible. Our yearbook owes its publication to the photography of Nechtman Studios and Sergeant Morrow. The printing was done by the American Yearbook Company. We are deeply grateful for the time and efforts displayed by these companies. Those few seniors who have worked diligently on the SPENCERIAN, editorial and business staff, deserve much credit and thanks. Last, but by no means least, we must thank you, the Senior Class of 1967, who are the body of this yearbook. The editors of the 1967 SPENCERIAN want to wish the 1967 Senior Class success, happi- ness, and health in future years and also hope this yearbook will serve as a publication to illuminate many happy memories. The great cameras are silent now, yet since the first day we entered high school, we have accumulated fond memories and undergone many profitable experiences. We have been able to reap the rewards of our advisors' and instructors’ work and gather the harvest of knowledge. Though experiences may soon be forgotten in time and fond memories fade all too soon, the knowledge we have gained will remain with us always. Through our variety of lenses we will be able to magnify the knowledge gained here at Spencer High School, and each of us in our many walks of life may continue the never-ending production of THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD.” The cameras we used as Spencerians Are silent and locked up tight. The spotlights we acquired in school Will be our guiding light. t PA TRONS AND A D VER TISEMENTS PATRONS Mr. and Mrs. William Ray Able Mrs. Annie Adams and Family Mr. and Mrs. B. T.
