Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1961 volume:

INTRODUCTION .... “Four golden years have passed, and the juture is ahead.” These are the words which epitomize the contents of the 1961 edition oj the “Spencerian.” The class of 1961 is proud to present a verbal and pictorial review of their laughter, their heartaches, their strug- gles, their achievements, and their aspi- rations. The 1961 Spencerian Staff has en- deavored to immortalize the past and predict a glorious future for all mem- bers of the illustrious class of 1961. The past four years have provided many rich experiences that will forever cling to our hearts. During the tenure of the class of 1961, many hours were spent working and learning of the very im- mediate problems of living. Many things have been retained and fortune appears to be smiling on us. The 1961 “Spencer- ian” seeks to preserve our precious memories and stimulate thoughts to pro- moth future growth arul development. Time will find us in unlimited vistas and avenues of life; but with the turn of a page, these ’’four golden years” can rapidly be recalled. JJiitory O Sf. pencer The W. H. Spencer High School, named for the late William Henry Spencer, who served as principal and supervisor of Negro schools jor jorly years, was organized in 1930 on Tenth Avenue and Eighth Street. An eleven year high school, Spencer graduated her first class in 1932 with F. R. Lampkin serving as principal. In 1945, C. W. DuVaul became princifHd, succeeding F. R. Lampkin and is presently serving in that cai acily. In 1950, Spencer changed from an eleven year high school to a twelve year high school, complying with Georgia State Lawv Spencer is accredited by the Stale ot .Geor- gia and the Southern Association of Gpfleges and Secondary Schools. As d class “A”, higli school; it teas moved into this wtwly con- structed building on Shepherd Drive in Sep- tember of 1953. Spencer High School stands out in academic and cultural activities and has won many citations and trophies in various areas. In athletics, Spencer has few peers and fewer equals. Spencer’s football teams through the years have won regionals and state cham- pionships. Its basketball teams have done equally as well. The Vocational Department is one of the best in the South and many trophies won in this department attest the efficiency of the students in this field. Spencer’s graduates are matriculating at colleges and universities throughout the United States, Europe and Africa, pursuing various careers in Medicine, Science, Educa- tion. Today is one which shall live forever in your parden of beautiful memories; for this is the end of your hiph school career, your graduation—the beginning of a new life. Now as you begin this new life, you will find yourself in a new world in which you will come to grips with the realities of life—life with its joys, life with its sorrows, life with its failures anil life with its marvelous achievements. As you leave these hallowed halls of Spencer, your Alma Mater, you will step across the great divide into college life. In this new life you will face new and more difficult problems. Some of these problems will prove to be very stubborn anil will challenge the best there is in you, but you alone must find the solution to them. You must be the master of your fate . . . you must be the captain of your soul. Just how ui’ll you will solve these complex problems depends upon how thorough your preparation has been and the bulldog tenacity with which you attack them. Your willpower, your determination, your character and your scholastic training will all rally to your support, if you begin to sing as you tackle the thing which couldn't be dona and you will do it. “Lives of great men all remind us. We can make our lives sublime And departing leave behind us Footprints on the sand of time.” —Longfellow ANNUAL STAFF AT WORK Robert Toney—Editor-in-Chief Janice Webb—Literary Editor Vivian Williams Alva Grad ham Assoc. These explorers had two motivating objectives in common, they were seeking knowledge and they were all given the same rank of Freshman. They were greeted by their Commanding Gen- eral, Principal C. W. DuVaul and introduced to their respective Company Com- manders; Mrs. Ashe, Mrs. Gibson. Mrs. Huff, Mrs. H. Lindsey, Mrs. Reid, Mr. Barnhart, Mr. Gentry, Mr. Hollis, Mr. Caldwell, and Mr. Lowe. These explorers were issued equipment which included several volumes which they were required to decode for their various instructors, causing them to be better informed through endless assignments. As fate would have it, some could not pass the test and were engulfed in the Great Sea of Failure. Those who yet remained were still dissatisfied, for they wanted to infiltrate other courses, and to learn more about Spencer. They gained the title of Sophomore and were well becoming acquainted when they were joined by other explorers from Fort Carver. Some hail new Commanders to inspire them to greater heights. The Commanders were Mrs. McCoy, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Stafford. United, they began to infdtrate other activities. Many of their classmates, dis- tinguished themselves as athletes, musicians, orators, actors and scholars. They joined many clubs and organizations. It ivas the year MCMLVIX, the explorers united and elected Robert Williams as Lieutenant. Together, they elected fellow explorer, Jacqueline Jones as “Miss Green wave' of MCMLVIX and MCMLX. Some won distinction academically by becoming members of the National Honor Society. They proudly climaxed a glorious year with the Junior-Senior Prom. The year was over and three of their fellow explorers bade them fond adieu as they headed for Fort College. These included: Ester Booth, Brenda Belcher anti Constance Hall. Eureka! they infiltrated the last course. In MCMLX they were ranked Seniors. Another exciting year was before them. They elected John Allen as Lieutenant with him to lead; they elected fellow explorer Gale Reid, “Miss Green wave of MCMLXL. They planted the first tree in honor of a past P.T.A. president. As the year ticked away, many of them realized that this tedious task of learning had just begun. With ten Commanders, they were led to their final reward, GRADUATION. H. Spencer High School, being of sound mind and disposing body, do make this our last will and testament, revoking all others heretofore made. Item I We devise and bequeath to our beloved principal, Mr. C. W. DuVaul, a gallon size container of love, hoping that each time he takes a little he will think of the pleasant memories we have shared, and the many wonderful ideas he has given us, for which we are extremely grateful. Item II We devise and bequeath to the faculty a brain wave sending device that will enable them to send the knowledge from their celestial brains to those less fortunate students, and so that at examination time they won’t be saying, They (the students) are getting worse every year.” Item III We devise and bequeath to the juniors our seats in chapel, our section in the cafeteria, our position as soloist in the chorus, our abilty to excel in football and basketball, and the hallowed halls of Dear Spencer to be cared for as much as we have cared for them. Also that portion of our brain that we have not used to its capacity, hoping that they will become more brilliant than we. Item IV We devise and bequeath to the sophomores our togetherness as a class, our ability to be first in all that we do, also our ability to harass the other classes by being first in initiative, first in loyalty, first in scholarship, and first in the heart of Spencer. Item V We devise and bequeath to the freshmen the road map to successful liv- ing at Spencer, which is, first step, to desire, second step, to endeavor, and third step, to achieve. In witness whereof we hereby attach our hand and seal this June 10, 1961. Witnesseth this ninth day of June, 1961. The Senior Class of 1961: John Allen, President; Alva E.
