Dear Parents, we shall always be grateful to you for your understanding and sympathy. We realize that you must have felt many times that your efforts in our behalf have gone unnoticed and unappreciated - but being young people we just didn't know exactly how to show you that we knew and cared. And so-in this small and certainly in- adequate recognition of your loving care we humbly dedicate this annual of the class of 1960. As you turn these pages may you find some small measure of fulfillment for all of your efforts. .-nm. Nfl SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION MR. WlLLIA.'Vl HENRY SHAW 11.3. Spehisco Staff JULIA KATE WYNN l 5KHipS!! CLASS HISTORY Margaret Williams ln the fall of the year nineteen hundred and fifty-six 300 prospective spacemen entered the ROCKETSHIP SHS and started a flight toward the planet Senior. The crew consisted of Mr. C. W. DuVaul as pilot, Mrs. Ann Hudson and Mrs. Rosa Childs as co-pilots, Mr. J. H. Smith and Miss E. A. Davis as radio operators, Miss E. J. Cole- man and Mrs. Dorothy Thompson as flight engineers, Mr. Lawrence Carter as flight scientist, Mrs. Constance Ward as navigator and Miss C. M. Webb as flight surgeon. Observing our plotted course of four long years, we launched our rocket on September 8, l956 on the planet Freshman. We lived for nine glorious months on planet Freshman. Our daily diet consisted of algebra, english, shop, home economics, physical education and science. The diet was too heavy for some of us and caused several deaths, from indigestion. The true spacemen were cour- ageous and spent every spare minute preparing for the second launching. S , In September, l957 we were joined by l8O spacemen from ROCKETSHIP CARVER. With additional spacemen the crew was enlarged. The additional crew included Mr. B. T. Stafford, Mr. S. L. Brown, Mrs. O. R. Washington, Miss E. A. Mack and Mrs. F. K. Welch. On September 3, l957 we landed on planet Sophomore. Existence on this planet was difficult and several times we thought that we would be annihilated. We coped with this problem by staying close to each other and getting ready for our next jaunt. We organized on planet Junior with Frank Tompkins as our president. Such persons as Jerry Dysick, Frank Tompkins, William Davis, Blanchard Thomas and Tommy Davis made themselves stars on the satellite football team. Others of us had been observed and were found to be able to accelerate to planet College, included in this group were Rosalyn Little, Vivian Warren, Edward Bell and Carl Wilson. Thus far our atmosphere had been a very protective blanket which protected us from many ob- stacles that stood in our way. Some of our spacemen de- cided that they could not stand the atmospheric pressure and decided to quit and return to earth. Planet Senior was reached in September, 1959 by 275 surviving spacemen and 8 crew members CMiss Davis, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Hudson, Miss Webb, Mrs. Childs, Miss Mack, Miss Coleman and Mrs. Washingtonl. We reorgan- ized our group with Frank Tompkins again being elected as president and Albert Edmonds as vice-president. With our head crew elected we settled and established camp rapidly. Every minute, hour and day counted. Not only were we struggling to pass the exhausting tests which would guarantee our remaining on the Senior planet, but we had to learn quickly how to live together in harmony although each of us had a different personality. From here, on planet Senior we got a view of other planets that we hope to explore. May we each find happi- ness on the planet of our choice. , - The future is now before us. We must go our separate ways, choose our own methods of survival and our crews. CLASS PROPHEC Y Juanita Dawkins As I look into the crystal ball of the future I am able to see our visions, dreams and hopes for the future fulfilled. I am able to see us excelling in professions, business, armed forces, trades and athletics. Representatives from fifteen southern colleges were here. They presented the offerings of their institutions in a most unique man- ner. The members of Gamma Tau Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority were delighted to have been the sponsors of this grand affair. Miss Ernestine A. Swfford ' THE GREENWA VE SAGA by William Arnold With high hopes and experience relatively scarce, Coach Odis Big Chief Spencer herded his Green Wave out to the practice field on Labor Day to begin work for the season ahead. At best they hoped for a 50-50 season. Line Coach The weeks that followed saw Coach Spencer whip into shape 48 candidates Mr. T. Works and gradually saw the freshmen of last year slowly begin shaping into the kind of players for which Spencer is famous. Something resembling a strong squad began to take form and pessimism began -to fade. By the opening contest Spencer had become a favorite over Calhoun and Spencerians went to Memorial Stadium to see a 25-8 victory in a downpour of rain. The Greenies were then ready for their opening conference game with David T. Howard of Atlanta. The fans who journeyed to Atlanta saw the Greenies defeated by a score of 27-19, but that was just enough to set fire to the Greenies. They picked up five consecutive victories before playing 11 deadlock with Ballard-Hudson, including the 26-0 Homecoming victory over Price High which enabled them to compete for regional honors. The following players paced Spencer as top competition in the Conference. Captain William Davis, Tommy Davis, Frank Thompkins, Jerry Dysick, James Mims, Alex Miles, Lucious Baldwin and Captain Blanchard Thomas. The class of 1960 has witnessed the following records accomplished by the Green Wave: 1956 9-0-2 State Cham- pions,-1957 6-2-1 runner-up State Playoff, 1958 5-0-3 Region IAA Champions, 1959 7-1-2 Region IAA Champions.
