THE SPENCERIAN 1958 SPENCER SR. HIGH Columbus, Georgia Editor Miriam Bailey Associate Editor Carolyn Parker Faculty Advisors V. F. Ingersoll, J. B. Woods Spencer Senior High School Columbus, Georgia We dedicate this 1958 edition of the SPEN- CERIAN to one uho has long maintained a keen interest in Spencer High School and its students. She has served many years as instructor and friend to thousands, reflecting in her tenure the same conquering spirit of those men and women who blazed the trails in the field of Education years be- fore. her. Miss Ernestine A. Davis FOREWORD High school days are happy days. As time passes they will become golden days—golden because they have become precious; golden because they can never be recaptured except as memories . Within the pages of this book is a record of those days. You will find friends you know, the clubs you joined, the teachers you loved and hated. You'll see again the old football team. Remember how you cheered extra loud for that certain number on the the team when we were winning, and how you went contemptuously silent when we were losing! You sit again on the old campus—you stroll down the long familiar halls to the lobby, to the lunchroom, to the Homemaking area, to the gym, to the classrooms. Oh, yes! the classroom. How angry you got when you got the I in Geometry. Kept you off the honor roll, didn't it? You'll remember the lunchroom. How you complained about the food!—yet you seldom missed a meal. You will recall chapel services, the Principal's messages, a nervous Senior giving an oration, the choir and the band. The many nooks remind you of Joe and Sue and all of it reminds you of the Good Ole Spencer Spirit ever present in every Spencerian. Yes, high school days were happy days, and as you turn the pages of this book, may you relive those golden yesterdays—all to yourself. CONTENTS FOREWORD ADMINISTRATION FACULTY GRADUATES ORGANIZATIONS SOCIAL CLUBS SPORTS SPECIAL EVENTS ADVERTISEMENT Spencerian MIRIAM BAILEY, Editor CAROLYN PARKER, Associate Editor KENNETH WASHINGTON, Business Manager SPENCERIAN Each new yearbook involves new adventure in publication work, but the '58 Spencerian has turned up more adventure throughout its production year than any staff member could have anticipated. The theme selection involved a minimum of midnite oil, for the love for dear old Spencer suggested the living Spencer Spirit—Little Priscilla. Priscilla is the invention of the art staff. She is a personification of the true Spencer Spirit. She is as wise as an owl, as vivacious as a Spencerian with the good old Spencer Spirit, as mischievous as a typical high school student, as loyal as a homing pigeon, as intelligent as one her age should be, and as spirited as the name Priscilla suggests. But the Art staff found the carrying out of the theme more difficult than the suggesting of it. No doubt the enlightening (?) debates concerning art expression versus the com- munication of ideas to mere mortals greatly complicated their efforts and tried their patience. Nevertheless, they responded beautifully. Highlighted by adventure and pleasurable moments and experience, the pro- duction year of the '58 Spencerian was nevertheless characterized by a dependency upon that all-important factor in the production of any publication—a dependable staff. HENSLEY Cafeteria Manager Senior, Juanita Stergis, visits the Counselor, Miss Mack On May 30 another group of Spencer students will assemble to receive their diplomas in a cere- mony which someone has appropriately titled Com- mencement . For some of these graduates, the road to completion has been long and difficult. For others, it has been four continuous happy and en- lightening years, filled with experiences and learn- ing that will assure a future of service to their com- munity and their nation. Still others have been here at Spencer for only two or three years—yet all have found their training valuable and beyond reproach. High school years do not need lengthy ex- planations for those who have experienced them. There are perhaps variations to some degree of activities and schedules between various schools but basically, the general functions and results are the same. And alike in all cases, these graduates will go forth into various fields to experience the great self-satisfaction that comes with accomplish- ment and worthiness. To the graduates of the class of 1958, as to the graduates of the past, go the sincere best wishes of the faculty and the student body, hoping that this group will reflect and cherish their education and their years here at Spencer Senior High School. SPENCER SENIOR HIGH CHORUS THE BAND Though their achieve- ments are not measured by diplomas, the social clubs take a very important part in the program of Spencer High School. If such a di- ploma could be advanced to these groups, it would be for their promotion of good sportsmanship, friendship, service, and all the qualities of social betterment. The clubs are the basis of a wholesome social life for the high school student. Each club has faculty supervision. J-LADIES IMPERIAL KNIGHTS Les Charmant Demoiselles Les Elites Majestic Personalities CHEERLEADERS AND MAJORETTES Behind every football game, every basketball encounter, every pep rally here at Spencer, the onlookers will find the second teams—those of our Greenwave Cheerleaders and Majorettes. Much credit is due these girls for their efforts to maintain the school spirit in back- ing our athletic squads. FOOTBALL COACH O. SPENCER ASSISTANT COACH T. L. WORKS ASSISTANT COACH O. STANBACK The 1957 Greenwave football team was runner-up in the State Championship play-off against Risley High of Brunswick, Georgia— Losing 27-12. The Greenwaves earned the berth in the State Championship play-off by defeating Carver High of Atlanta, Georgia in the Regional play-off by a score of 19-6. The Greenwaves were defending State Champions when they bowed to Risley and had one of the best records ever compiled in the State—having gone 27 games without a defeat (including football seasons of 1955-'56'57). The junior basketball team had an average of 47.3 points per game and was never headed or defeated by more than three points in their losses. BASEBALL L. 1 , . - Athletic Director, B. T. STAFFORD REGISTRATION Confusion Queues threaded in a tangle of confusion. Once again the corridors and gymnasium resounded to the excited voices of green freshmen and to the reserved murmuring of upper classmen. Registration for the school year had begun and for those who had been through it before, especially the teachers, it was the same old tale. Despite the numerous requests for birthdates and other information, the two days of registration were quite sufficient for the tasks—even counting the many souls who tried in vain to skip to the next class or those who tried to ignore the failure in 10th year English when scheduling for his classes. Students at Spencer now know one of the routines at College, U.S.A. CLUBS ORGANIZED Student Council—No One Appreciated Taking it on the chin and known only to those who are interested in registering com- plaints, the members of the Student Council under the faculty supervision of Mr. Coach Odis Spencer, deserves plenty of credit for al I of the work that they have so quietly accomp- lished during the school year. Sox hops, pep meetings, Post-Victory dances, chapel exercises are just a few of the many accomplishments. JtDMSMMjinq Last fall, October to be exact, the homecoming fever hit the air on SSHS campus. To select a queen was uppermost on everyone's mind. Representatives from the Junior and Senior classes “paraded” qualifications and confused voters. Candidates were presented to the student body by “Lucky” Allan Reese (who seems to always get the job). Talents, fashions, charm—slogans, mottos, treats—all were “vote getters” used by the candidates. The balloting teas efficiently handled by students from the Social Science classes and tab- ulations kept most secret until the last possible minute. In spite of the wear on the nerves from waiting, students were glad to see Margaret “Trish” Lee come out on top. Her runner-ups were Emma Sue McCrory and Anise Wright. “Trish” is a member of the Senior Class. Her gleaming smile made her the envy of many at her coronation in the school auditorium on the big day before the game. Her honor court consisted of Louise Heywood, Lillian “Bunky” McClung, Judy Jackson, Helen Robinson, Helen Glover, Nancy Cooper, and Rozalia Harris. Each girl was escorted by a handsome upper- classman. RADIO AND NEWSPAPER REPORTER HONOR GRADS ANNOUNCED News Anyone????? Did you ever wonder why Eleanor Minor was always ladened with scraps of paper, notepads arnd pencils (sticking from her hair and from behind her ears) ??? Just trying to gather the news before it becomes history. Eleanor is the owner of the charming voice that reports the news weekly on a local radio station and is the same person who gathers and reports the school news to the local newspaper. She is a member of the Senior Class and is a J-Lady. f, l A 1 MAY DAY Faculty members dressed in gym cos- tumes of the roaring twenties and plaited the may pole on May Day of this year. Other May Day events included archery, track meet, volley ball, trampoline acts, horse shoe games, and deck tennis. Students were surprised (to put it mildly) to find faculty members with enough youth left to give strong competition in the sports events. DRAMATIC CLUB WINS STATE HONORS The Senior Dramatic Club played host to the State Dramatic Festival in February of this year. High schools from Macon and Atlanta entered in the Competition. Spencer's win- ning play was titled I Shall Be Waiting . The cast included Allen Reese, Emma Sue McCrory, Judy Jackson, Melvin Griffin, and Willie Alexander. The play was directed by Mrs. E. J. Gibson and Mr. E. T. Lindsey. The president of the Senior Class an- nounced during the Class Day exercises the names of the top five honor students in the class. The student maintaining the highest scholastic average over the four year period was named Valedictorian. The honor went to Vera Williams, a very sedate, unassum- ing member of the 12-3 Homeroom. On class day she delivered the Valedictory ad- dress. Second honors went to Dorothy Watt of the 12-4 Homeroom. Third place went to Bernice Hodo. Helen Robinson and Emma Sue McCrory tied for fourth place. Izora Washington ran a close fifth. Other students among the top ten places were: Elizabeth Allen, Miriam Bailey, Calvin Giddens, Mar- garet Gamble and Herman Carter. JR. DRAMATIC CLUB PRESENTS COMEDY The Junior Dramatic Club under the di- rection of Mrs. Ashe, Reid, Washington and Welch presented a three act comedy en- titled It's a Great Life . The cast included Ernest Murphy, Willie James Thomas, Charles Greenwood, Rosa Elias, Denise Bushby, Lillian McClung, Lois Hunter, Ester Booth, Jeannie Holloway, Elbert Nelson and Willie Buckner. From among these, who knows what great Thespians might arise? ? ? JULIA COMES HOME Everybody remembers Julia Moore. She was a Junior on SSHS campus last year. She is now resting between her freshman and sophomore years at Fisk University, Nash- ville, Tennessee. There's no error in the above statement. It's true—she was a JUNIOR last year. She passed a college entrance exam and was ad- mitted to Fisk University without complet- ing her high school years. We hear, by the way, that she is doing very well at Fisk. Her major is Physics and she is minoring in Mathematics. Julia is home to march with her class during the graduation exercises.
