INTRODUCTION The Senior Class of 1956 makes its “Last Voyage” across these vast waves of ocean that ive know as the “Spencer Sea.” Hardships and high tides have confronted us, but this enduring class has conquered them. We have gathered the language of the sea, wherefore, we stand facing our future. A little apprehensive, perhaps, but firm in the knowledge that our parents and teachers have done their best to help us chart a safe course. Knowing this, we set the sails for our “LAST VOYAGE” THE SENIORS OF 1956 HUMBLY DEDICATE THIS RECORD OF OUR JOURNEY TO OUR PARENTS Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Adams Mr. and Mrs. Dan Allen Mrs. Pecolar Allen Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Arnold Mrs. Mattie Averette M Sgt. and Mrs. E. In about 1952, When a group of sailors started out To see what they could do. They boarded ship, hoisted sail. And sailed out in the blue; For this courageous bunch of sailors Wanted to see what they could do. The sailors were the Freshmen; The ship was Spencer High, The sea was the sea of learning; Our hopes were mighty high. We sailed very long, we sailed very far, We sailed for almost a year, The sea grew more boisterous as time went on But nothing did we fear. For we were courageous sailors, Our troubles were nothing but bores; And after mastering the raging sea, We dropped anchor and we were Sophomores. But this was not to last always We had to leave later or sooner And after sailing almost another year, We dropped anchor and we were Juniors. We stayed here a while, but not very long. The waves all the while were growing nearer, We fought and fought, but we wouldn't give up Soon again—anchor and then—Seniors. Some of the sailors grew tired; Others just decided they'd quit, But the rest kept on going, they kept right on sailing, 'Till the shores of graduation they'd hit. Now we've reached the end of our journey But not all of us will stop here Some will sail on other seas ‘Without worry, anxiety or fear. Our captain was a very brave one Our crew the best of the best They too, have sailed long, they too, have sailed far They all deserved to be blest. Though it is the last trip for some of the sailors And maybe for some of the crew The ship will still sail, it still will go on Though the sailors may sometimes be few. Goodbye dear Spencer, you're a mighty good ship We don't find them like you every day Long may you sail o'er the wide, wide, sea, God keep you always we pray. By Mary Ethel Burrus CLASS SONG Tune: It's Almost Tomorrow Now it is the time for us to bid adieu Spencer, you'll never know how we'll miss you. Teachers, who've been so kind and true We pray the Lord will take care of you. Principal and students, we hate to go Because we love and cherish you so. Though it breaks our hearts for us to part this way, We hope to meet again some happy day. It's almost tomorrow, for here comes the sun To tell us that finally our vict'ry is won. We'll always remember the moments we shared And now that we're leaving, our hearts are so sad. Goodbye, dear old Spencer, goodbye, goodbye, We'll hold your banner forever high. ATHLETICS By JENNINGS O. SHELTON A four year old scene of football has closed and nine varsity players have played their last magnificant roles. This presentation has taken up four years of production by these illustrious players under the leadership of Coach Odis Spencer assisted by Coach Oscar Stanback. The Greenies are the most successful team in the conference, having spent these years under the top mentorship of Coach Spencer, former star of Alabama State College and Coach Stanback, former star of Tuskegee Institute at Tuskegee, Alabama. Coach Spencer has held the role of top mentor in the Big Ten Con- ference for eight years, while Coach Stanback has held the assistanceship for five years. Mr. Spencer received this position after such superb coach- es as B. T. Fowlks and the late John Martin. As the seasons of time moved into the Atomic Age, Coach Odis (Big Chief) Spencer and Coach Os- car (Little Booster) Stanback stepped into the Atomic Lights, and operated their steadfast team with the two platoon system in 1951, but they abolished this system in the season of 1955 to add more strength to their team by using three teams that could play offense and defense. Spencer produced championship teams in both 1950 and 1952. Coach Spencer and the student body can be proud of seven years of 43 wins against 1 1 losses and 6 ties. In 1952 the Greenies started with practically all letter men; however, Robert Bowens and Jennings Shelton, two determined players made first team as freshmen and saw plenty of action. Joe Thomas made a touchdown during his freshman year. The Greenwaves were destined for a championship team and they wiped out every foe that they faced on the gridiron. They conquered the “Impossible, which was the defeating of all the four teams of the Atlanta schools. They stopped the rivals and were cham- pionship bound. Only 19 points were scored against the rugged defense in that season. The Greenies got off to a bad start in 1953, however, losing their opening to Tuskegee High in Tuskegee, Alabama, by a score of 19-0. Despite their being defeated, they high lighted the season with a 40-6 score over South Girard. All honors are decked on Joe Thomas, Jennings Shelton, Robert Bowens, Daniel Starkes, Theo- dore Johnson, John Hinton, Harvey Claiborne, John Johnson, and John Williams. Captain Jennings Shelton won the most-outstanding and most-valuable player awards for 1954. These outstanding varsity players will leave huge holes in the Green Wave lineup that will be replaced with more good stock. These Golden Tides have made history at Spencer, and advanced football is staring them in the eyes. When Joe Thomas ran a six to nothing victory over South Girard, it marked the last time they would ever put on a uniform to start for The Mighty Greenies. In 1952 the Greenies were unde- feated, having an 8-0 record. In 1953, they ended the season with a 5-2-1 record. In 1954, another season with a 5-2-1. In 1955 they finish- ed the season with a 4-2-2 record.
