■ QiA, J'injaL Symphonic, VYl dlmp J'ffmv uL Spencer, as one of those American institutions that are preparing the youth of today for citizenship, has made its final educational contribution to the graduating class of 1955. She has stood as a beacon, pointing the way toward those things which are wholesome and worthwhile. Since the symphony orchestra is one of the prime tokens of American cul- ture, we believe it to be idealistic in representing the better life. Because of the similarity of purpose, preparation and variation of the orchestra to the excellent training received at Spencer Senior High, we choose as the theme of our year- book. SYMPHONIC MEDLEY OF THE CLASS OF ’55. The class publishes this annual as a memorandum of four years of happenings which took place in Spencer High School. The story of our high school period is not complete because we can not print the spirit that lives within our heart. We can only give you glimpses of this great passing panorama which should serve to call back, in later years, the glorious time spent here. As we make our departure, we wish to thank our Principal, sponsors, and teachers for their conscientious efforts in helping to shape our destinies. Our lives have been enhanced by their endeavors. As we leave these hallowed walls, may our lives be a credit to our families, churches, school, country and. above all. may they he a credit to our God. Lawton, two of the oldest teachers, in terms of actual service, in Muscogee County. For many years, these instructors have given untiring service toward the educational and the moral development of the youths of this community. Ihrough the years they have always found time to help students who needed special assistance with their problems. We affectionately recall their admirable patience and steadfast enthusiasm in regards to the growth of this class. In gratitude for their many years of sacrificial service, we proudly dedicate this edition of the Spencerian. 16) (pAAMnJtmc (p d uuJtA, ofc. 0.dtwriisiA. and fifwqMAA. ANN E. Although the chief responsibility for production w as on my shoulders, there would not have been a year- book without the staff, for papers had to be written and typed, pic- tures had to be identified, ads had to be sold and the book had to be arranged. I am thankful to all who helped to complete this book. May this edition of the 1955 Spencerian serve to call back in later years the glorious times spent at Spencer. (45) S nuAA, j''55 film JJviVl JinaL Symphmu On September 7, nineteen hundred and fifty-One. two hundred and forty-seven prospective mus- icians began their preparatory work at Spencer High in Columbus, Georgia, to become members of the orchestra of life. It was our good fortune to have as conductors Mrs. A. I. Fowlkes, Miss E. T. Spencer. Miss C. J. Kynds, Mr. B. T. Stafford. Mr. 0. Stanhack. Miss W. Isbell and Mrs. A. T. Hudson. As we adapted ourselves to our surroundings, we plunged into our rhythmic teachings. The second melody is like a newly blossomed plant. For at this time seventy-five string pieces were added from Carver Heights. Amid this strand, the sophomore class had the privilege of having the state’s president of the New Homemakers of America. Virginia Davis. Walter Woods maintained the highest average from the inter-collegiate test given to juniors and seniors. He was offered the opportunity to enter college following his sophomore year. Because of his love for the orchestra he remained. The class proved itself so great that a three month’s interval was given before the third chord. On the third step of the staff, two of our conductors were given a rest and Miss A. J. Jones and Mrs. D. E. Butts were added. We began rehearsal once more in common time. When the time and pitch began to drag, Romeo Patterson, our section-head, pepped things up. Some of the musicians brought notable fame to the orchestra. Most outstanding of them were: James Coleman, who won first place in the state Hi-Y contest for his recitation of the “Prodigal Son’’; Ann Hicks, who won prizes for her outstanding con- tribution to the “Voice of Democracy” contest: Liddie Ross, who brought billing to the orchestra through her essay, “Grades Are Not Important”. The orchestra is also proud of Johnny M. Moses, w ho won second place in the city-wide essay contest on tuberculosis; Constance Weldon, who won first place in the local Bible contest and Al Wheeler, who won second place in the same contest. The year was very successful, for we gave our first concert, an extraordinary “Junior-Sen- ior prom” in cut-time. Approximately one hundred of our musicians grew' weary during the years, causing the number of participating musicians to decrease to one hundred and thirty-one. At the birth of the fourth chord the following officers were elected: James Coleman, president: Liddie Ross, vice-president: Beverly Moore, secretary: Thelma Caldwell, assistant secretary; Contance Weldon, financial secretary; Romeo Patterson, treasurer, and Robert Russell, business manager. The medley of songs is extremely crowded with thrills and excitement. The down beat features Bertha Dowdell as Miss Greenwave of 1954-55. Ther are no repeats in our melodic lines, only the will to move forward. Through hard work and sacrifice we have reached our goal. Commencement. For four years we have played a glorious sym- phony, full of tears, heartaches, and happiness. However, we feel that our best tunes have not been play- ed. As we play our final notes, we want to thank our Principal and teachers who have been the most wonderful conductors in the world. WE ARE READY “Are you ready,” said the teachers, “to be able to go on?” Though the way be rough and rocky, we will strive to carry on. Farewell, dear ole Spencer, dear teachers, classmates, too. We know we’ll miss our principal, who’s been so kind and true. CHORUS Yes, we are ready to be able to go on. To let the rough way be a stepping stone. Yes, we are ready to stand and never fall. Yes, dear teachers, we’re ready to go on. tfla A, (pOWL We still remember the day so vividly When we entered Spencer High, Just a bunch of energetic freshmen With an unconcerned desire. We became more ambitious In the year of ’52, For being sophisticated sophomores, We had a lot of work to do. Our minds turned to certain objectives, Our thoughts were clean and free, And we soon found ourselves Juniors in the year of ’55. Some fell by the roadside They couldn’t make the test. The others held their heads high, And said, “We’ll do our best.” With a large sum of Christianity With opportunity at our door, By the grace of our Redeemer We were seniors in the year of ’54. We’ve all had our hardships But we wouldn’t hesitate or quit. For we knew, if we wanted to reach the goal. Graduation It would take cooperation and grit. Teachers, you have been our leaders. Helping us onward to our set goal. You have been very understanding In helping our hidden treasures to unfold. Dear Principal, we’ll always remember you, For your loving, tender ways; 'l ou have shown a deep interest in us, For so many, many days. Farewell, dear students. Thanks for your heartfelt sympathy; You’ve also been so very helpful With respect for our destiny We’ll always remember you, Dear ole Spencer High. We'll love you forever and forever flying high. And keep the Greenwave banner Goodbye, Spencer, goodbye We will keep you in our hearts; And while starting our life’s journey May we seek the godly part. (85) RECORD of GRADU A TING ATHLETES FOOTBALL The Spencer High Greenwave team will suffer the loss of seven lettermen who will leave gigantic holes in the powerful line. These promising players are Wallace Brown, Edward Tavlor. Phillip Mickles. Frank Ferrell. Jesse Starkes, Robert Lyles and Richard Pitts. The effects from the playing of football by the players of the class of ’55 will expand for over four years, for Coach Odis Spencer has done everything to improve the physical and mental abilities of each player. Captain Wallace Brow n has been a varsity player for three years. He has been the keyman at the post of right tackle. From this position, the Greenies have been capable of scoring many points. Frank Ferrell and Phillip Mickles were the play callers whose accuracy at quarterback on offense and defense led the Greenies to many victories. Their passing was excellent and is the clue to many scores. Mickles was the kicking and passing artist, while Ferrell did the hand-offs and passing. Edward Taylor, Robert Lyles, Jesse Starkes, and Richard Pitts were the other season’s regulars who have demoralized the opponent’s attacks. During their reign on the team they have promoted their physical and mental features. They have been the stone and mercury men that paced Spencer as top competition in the conference. BASKETBALL The basketeers at Spencer have slumped in misery grieving over the departing of Robert Lyles and Phillip Mickles. Lyles started for the Greenies as a forward, but Coach Spencer also saw fit to use him in the pivot spot. During the last two years he has held this position in every game. Mickles, who was late starting this season, has a dynamic background behind him during his athletic career. He began playing varsity basketball when he was in the ninth grade and has made spectacular headway. The team will be greatly hindered next year by the loss of these men.
