SETTING: Fortune Teller's Apartment. Curtain opens disclosing a room furnished like a fortune teller's. Pauline Beauchamp, Inez Franklin, and Wanda Franklin enter the room. Pauline: So this is the apartment of the famous Madam Tellitall! Wanda: I have heard that she can tell you about your past, present, and future. Inez: I wonder where the Madam is? Pauline: Oh, here's her crystal! Let's see if it will work for us! QAll gather around the crystalj Wanda: What shall we ask it to show us? Inez: Let's try to find out what we will be doing fifteen years from now. Pauline: Why not see if it can also tell us of the future of our class- mates? Wanda: That's a good idea, but I wonder how we will go about it? Inez: Maybe there's a magic word. Pauline: No, silly, I was reading about something like this the other day, and all you have to do is concentrate on what you want to see. Inez: I doubt if that works, but we'll give it a try. CAll concentrate and look searchingly into the crystalj All: There's a picture forming! ! ! !! Wanda: Look, it's Gerry Franklin, typing a letter of advice to Marjorie Gray, who seems to still be having trouble with her love affairs. Pauline: The picture is fading! Here is another one! Oh, there's David Fender wearing a white cap and apron. He's chief cook and bottle- washer at Huffman's Cafe here in Spencer. Inez: Who is that person among all those trees? It's Gweneth Gibson. and she's trying to convert the natives of Africa to Christianity! Wanda: There are a lot of animals, but they're in cages. It looks like a zoo. It is! And there's John Spicer, wearing a cap with Curator written on it feeding the animals. Pauline: Now it's showing our own high school. There's Mary Everly, carrying a history book and a letter addressed to: Mary Everly, Principal of Spencer High School. She seems to be calling someone. It's Bill Stevens -he must have been made Dean of Men at old S. H. S. Wanda: Look at all that water! There's a seasick sailor leaning over the rail of a ship. It's Claude Reagan and he has on a sweater with some lettering on it. I can't see exactly what it is. I can see better now. It says Claude Reagan, Heavyweight Champion of the U. S. Navy. I guess Claude is in the height of his glory! He always did want to be a sailor and a boxer. Inez: The scene is reverting back to Spencer again! It's the Roller Rink and Nina West is instructing a group of children how to skate. Wanda: What's that it is showing now? Pauline: It is the Indianapolis Speedway and Bill Sims seems to be the center of attraction. I guess he won the race. Judging from the Way he drove while in high school, I donit see how he could do anything but win. Wanda: Isn't that a filling station? A car is driving up, and Dewey Hassler is coming out of the station. A chip off the old block, I guess. Will you look who is in the car! There are Lois Sherfield and Virginia Franklin, who is wearing a nurse's uniform. There's a black bag on the seat with 'Dr. Sherfield written on it. Inez: Isn't that Jim Winders hanging up clothes and there's Ollie Troth bending over a tub! Oh, there's a sign with Winders and Troth's Laundry written on it. If that doesn't take the cake, I don't know what does! Pauline: Whew, look at that streamlined car that just drove up to the laundry! Jack Wetzel is the chauffeur and he is talking to Beryl .Adkins, who is sitting in the back seat. My, but she must have found a gold mine! Wanda: Now the setting is in Hollywood. Isn't that Barbara Lawson taking dictation from Mickey Rooney? I hope she has improved in her shorthand since she graduated from old S. H. S. Inez: And there's Eleanor McGuire curling Shirley Temple's hair. I suppose she's a beautician. Pauline: There's another room now, and Harley Allen is directing a love scene between Bob Highet and Fern Freeman. Wanda: There's Sidney Mathes. Why, he's doubling for Mickey Mouse! Inez: The setting is changing again. Now it's showing a circus. There's a figure flying through the air. I believe it's Lois Simpson and she's being tossed from Harry Call to Lloyd Penrose! That sign says they are the 'three great acrobats of the Blarney and Blooney circus. Pauline: There's another performer dressed in a leopard's skin and carrying some dumb-bells! Inez, it's YOU!!! Who would have thought that you would come to that? Wanda: Here comes another performer. It's another Woman and she's dressed as a clown. My but she's fat! Well, if it isn't Dorothy Baugh!-Look at that man surrounded by all those insects. I do believe it is Loren Spear with his flea circus. Pauline: Isn't that a large, steaming kettle? It is, and Maxine Booth is bending over it. Oh, I know. She's at the head of the P. T. A. hot lunch project at Spencer. Inez: I see a lot of sand and water now. Isn't that good-looking fellow walking back and forth on the beach Orval Hinton? It is! He must be a life guard on Miami Beach. Wanda: There's Clyde Kiser and he's writing something. It's a book and the title is Should Husbands Cook Breakfast? --by One Who Does. Pauline: There's another person bending over a desk! It's Evelyn Jones and she's drawing cartoons! I always thought she- had talent. Wanda: What are Maurice Borden and Jack Maners running so hard for? Why, they are cops and are chasing someone. It's you, Pauline. There, they have caught you, and you are protesting. Inez: Here comes another person carrying a satchel with Attorney written on it. Well, it's you, Wanda, and you are waving a bill which says Wanted-Pauline Beauchamp, gangster's moll. Pauline: Let's leave. I don't think this old crystal can really tell the future anyhow. Wanda: Maybe not, but we already know the worst, so we may as well see what the rest of the class will be doing fifteen years from now. Pauline: All right. Let's see what it shows next. Wanda: There's Murrell Edwards and he pushing a garbage cart down the streets of Cunot. Inez: My, look at those girls dance! Well, it's Geneva Rumple and LaVerne Rusher. There's a program on the floor and it says Rumple and Rusher, The World's Greatest Ballet Dance Team. Pauline: The scene is changing again. There seems to be a sale going on. Look, the auctioneer is Mary Jo Watkins, and she is being assisted by Ruth Dayhuff. Wanda: Isnlt that a school assembly? Well, there is Elizabeth Livingston giving a lecture to a group of students. Oh, I know. She is presi- dent of Central Normal College. Now it is showing another school room, but what queer-looking children! They are Hawaiians and Mary Straly is teaching them. Inez: Well, what on earth is that strange-looking device? It's floating in air and is occupied by Robert Long and Cecil Parrish. They seem to be lost in space. They probably started for Mars--the poor, foolish boys! Wanda: I can't see anything now. There is a white mist over every- thing. It's becoming clearer though. Well, if it isn't Roberta DeFord, and she is trying on a wedding gown. Pauline: The scene seems to be in the Metropolitan Opera House now. The audience is applauding wildly. There is Alberta Jordan and she is getting ready for an encore. Inez: Isn't that Bob McNaught sitting with his feet on a desk? He is smoking a pipe and a placard on the desk says Desk of State Park Custodian. Wanda: Now it is showing a big farm. There is Mary Jean Royer feed- ing a herd of cattle. She is raising cows and is using their hides to cover basketballs. She always was an ardent basketball fan. Pauline: There sits Doris Gibson with a book written by Juanita Unger. She is writing something. The title is Criticisms by Doris Gibson, the great- cst of all critics. Inez: I don't see any more pictures. I guess that is all of our old class- mates. Wanda: I wonder what has happened to Madam Tellitall? Pauline: We don't need to see her now. Let's hurry and leave before she comes. fStarts walking toward exit. Inez follows.J Wanda: I wonder how much of what we saw will come true. Pauline and Inez: I hope none of it does!!! Wanda: Oh, but I want to be a lawyer! KPauline and Inez exchange glances and walk outl CURTAIN THE END PAULINE BEAUCHAMP InEz FRANKLIN WANDA FRANKLIN .,,,i....-4 CLASS WILL We, the class of 1940, having learned a vast amount of invaluable knowledge, have come to the realization that the time has come to make a willg therefore, after deep concentration we make and publish this, our last will and testament. After due consideration, I, Juanita Unger. wish to leave my flawless complexion to Jane Hickam. I shall keep my sewing ability for myself. I, Mary Jo Watkins, do hereby will and bequeath my reticent Ways to Maxine Winders. My lovely black hair I wish Jean Matson to receive. I, Jack Wetzel, being of sound mind and bodv. do hereby will my per- fect conduct in the assembly to Dick Franklin. My immaculate trousers I leave to Perry Thomas. To Charles Jackson, I, James Winders. wish to leave my lightning speed. Concerning my interests in the Junior class I'll decide later. I, Nina West, willingly leave my red hair to Maxine Greene, my indi- vidual laugh I suppose I'll keep. Finally, to the janitors we leave all our old remnants of textbooks, erasers, and pencils that they happen to find in their respective territories. To this our last will and testament we affix our signatures on this 3rd day of May in the year 1940. Witnessed: Signed: Miss Mary Louise Brown Doris Gibson Mr. Renos Spangler Nina West Mr. Albert Stewart Gerry Franklin ULASS HI TURIE SENIOR In September of 1936, seventy daring pilgrims landed -on the barren rocks of higher education in Spencer High School. We chose Captain Robert Long as our leader, Daniel Dreher as Lieutenant Captain, and Barbara Lawson as historic and financial recorder. Our overseers were Mr. Hub- bard, Mr. Graves, and Mrs. Waymire. In the following May, we held a fes- tival in honor of our success and happiness. We chose from the Freshman colony, as our representatives, Lillian Allee and Evelyn Jones. In the fall of 1937, fifty-nine faithful pilgrims entered into the Sophomore colony. We selected as our new leaders Captain .James Winders, Lieutenant Captain Harry Call, and historic and financial recorder Inez Franklin. Our overseers were Mr. Ault, Mr. Edwards, and Miss Brown. Rep- resentatives for the May Day festival were Doris Gibson and Geraldine Franklin. In 1938, fifty-three proud pilgrims entered into the Junior colony. Our new leaders were Captain Loren Spear, Lieutenant Captain Wesley Summers, historic recorder Geraldine Franklin, and financial recorder Pauline Beauchamp. Our industrious pilgrims raised money by selling Christmas wreaths for the greatest event of the year. On April 23, we presented the play The Gang's All Here. On May 5, after all our plans were completed, we went to Hotel Graham for the J unior-Senior reception. Eleanor McGuire and Elizabeth Livingston were representatives for the May Day festival. Miss Douglas, Mr. Stewart, and Mr. Graves were our overseers. In 1939 the Senior colony entered Spencer High School to finish their education. The colony elected new leaders-Captain Harry Call, Lieutenant Captain Robert McNaught, financial and historic recorder Elizabeth Liv- ingston. Our overseers were Miss Brown, Mr. Spangler, and Mr. Stewart. We looked forward to the publication of the SPENCERIAN. We earned funds for the publication by selling candy at the basketball games and at noons. We presented a play f'Keep on the Sunny Side as another source of obtain- ing money. We chose Wanda Franklin to reign over the May festival and as our representatives, Marjorie Gray and Barbara Lawson. We, the colonists, celebrated our success by attending the Junior-Senior reception. We, also, attended Class Night, a ceremonial rite, and a colonial dance. On May 14, we received our DIPLOMAS, donned our cloaks, shouldered our muskets, and marched off into the wilds of life. Mary Marie Straly Mary Josephine Watkins Eleanor McGuire JUNIOR In September, 1937, one hundred and five green freshmen stepped down into the halls of higher learning. Scared? Yes, of course, but we fought valiantly to seem comfortable and at home in the eyes of upper classmen. Choosing Kyle Weidner, Rodney Penrose, and Betty Jo Carpenter as our guiding lights, we managed to struggle through a party and a picnic 'with some amount of success. We were also aided by our sponsors, Mr. Hubbard. Mr. Stewart, and Mrs. Marshall. At the end of the year we chose Doris Dreher and Betty Jo Carpenter to represent our class in the May Festival. We now had sufficient requirements necessary to complete our freshman year and were ready to begin as so-called silly Sophomores. We started our Sophomore year by holding a class meeting and elect- ing Robert Matthews, Oran Kinney, and Ruth Royer as our officers. By this time we felt quite at home with the upper classmen and very important among our fellow-students. With the help of Mrs. Waymire and Mr. Ed- wards we held a more successful party on Hallowe'en, and a picnic later in the year at Owen Park. We chose Dorothy Starnes and Phyllis Finecy as May Queen attendants from our class. We were now ready to begin as jolly Juniors. In our Junior year we got our first experience in the field of financial problems. This time we chose Gene Ramsey, Earl Ashley, Maxine Hart- man, and Ruth Elaine Rodenbeck for our leaders. By selling Xmas wreaths, giving a Junior play, collecting class dues, etc., we held the customary ban- quet in honor of the Seniors. We were aided by Miss Galimore, Mr. Corbin, and Mr. Edwards. At the end of the year we chose Betty Vickrey and Max- ine Hartman as May Queen attendants. Feeling very important, we move forward, looking with great anticipa- tion toward being dignified Seniors. Ruth Elaine Rodenbeck SOPHOMORE A very important looking group of eighty-nine youngsters entered the high school floor of S. H. S. on September 12, 1938. However, under that veneer of arrogance lay an inferior feeling. After a few weeks of becoming acquainted, the Freshies elected Don Bock for president of the class, Merle Richardson vice-president, and Mary Franklin as secretary-treasurer. The meetings were conducted successfully with the aid of Mr. Hubbard and Mrs. Marshall, our class sponsors. During the course of the year we had a Hallowe'en party and a picnic at McCormick's Creek State Park. In the spring we elected Jane Hickam and Charlotte Franklin for May Queen At- tendants. Although we regretfully bade farewell to dear old Spencer High on May 17, 1939, it was with as many tears that we re-entered on September 11, 1939, as Sophomores. Still, there was a cheerful outlook in that we had several new teachers to become accustomed to. This year Owen Franklin was elected president, William Gibson, vice-president, and Juanita Fish, secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Marshall and Mr. Hubbard were again our sponsors. We had a Hal1owe'en party and, taking advantage of the year 1940, a Leap Year party. We elected Imogene Brown and Margie Kumpf for May Queen attendants. Looking forward to a year fand we hope no morel as jolly Juniors, we left our Alma Mater with undignified shouts of School's out! Juanita Fish FRESHMAN In the month of September, 1939, about eighty bright-eyed boys and girls wandered in these large halls. Yes, we were all being called Green Freshies. It wasn't long before we were settled and didn't seem to mind the word green any longer. At our first class meeting we elected Dick Lucas, president, John McKay, vice-president, and Jo Ann Pryor, secretary- treasurer. Then with the help of the sponsors, Miss VanHorn, Mr. Smartz, and Mr. Becker, we gave a very successful party. Jo Ann Pryor and Lenore Kinney were chosen for the May Queen Attendants. Except for a few who found some dullspots, we eagerly look forward to the coming year, and are willing to give our seats to another group of Freshies. Jo Ann Pryor WW -hwwwvf ,JU ith- 3 Nl an-. Spencer won the Wabash Valley ljreliminaries by defeating Clay City, Coal City, and Ellettsville. ln the Wabash Valley Finais at Terre Haute Spencer dropped a heartbreaker to Lyons. Spencer had previously defeated Lyons in a scheduled game. Spencer was defeated by Staunton in the Sectional held at Spencer. TRAUK Track was re-established in Spencer High School after a seven-year period of inactivity. This was brought to life through the efforts and coach- ing of Glenn Ricketts, Spencer High School basketball mentor. Many high schools include football in their athletic program. This serves to keep basketball players in training the year around. Due to the size of the school and the high cost of maintaining a football team, Spencer's athletic pro- gram does not include football. Therefore, track, a much less dangerous and costly activity, may be used as a means of year around training. Track also gives boys who do not play basketball a chance to participate in an athletic contest. This revival of track in 'Spencer High School was closely followed by other schools throughout the county. Spencer defeated Patricksburg and Quincy in a three team track meet. The score was Spencer 53, Patricksburg 12, and Quincy 7. Gosport and Freedom were also scheduled in track this year. The county track meet was held in Spencer in April.
