After com- pleting quite a rigorous initiation, the boys become full- fledged members. Members of the lettermen's club are easily spotted, as they wear the leather sleeved purple and gold jackets or the gold sweaters with the purple S , This year the S-Club voted to purchase letter sweaters rather than letter jackets. Getting these new sweaters called for new regulations. If a freshman won a letter, he would receive the frosh numeral. Then the boys would receive a letter sweater for winning a major award in any of the five Madson. The basis for the major letter awards would be determined by the coaches. In the event of winning the conference championship, the team would be able to purchase letter jackets. The S-Club members wore their letter sweaters, white shirts, and black ties on the days that varsity games were being played. This did much to boost school spirit and game attendance. By ushering at the fieldhouse, working concessions, sponsoring the Relay's Dance, and canvassing Spencer with season athletic tickets, the S-Club, under the direc- tion of Mr. Bill Cook, made the year a big success. TUDE T STUDENT COUNCIL The maior undertaking of the Student Council was the Homecom- ing festivities. Since Homecoming is primarily designated to honor alumni, we decided to try to get as many alumni as possible to parti- cipate. The publicity committee went to work and obtained very fine coverage from KICD and the Reporter. Preparation for Homecoming began early in the week when each homeroom began building its miniature float. The miniature float plan was inaugurated this year to arouse interest and participation in Home- coming by the student body. The only limitation was that they had to be made for less than 35.00 apiece. On Wednesday after school the traditional window painting contest. started. Any organization that wished could enter the contest. Student Council gave prizes to the first three places. Heidi Keir and Patti Keninger were in charge of decorating the Legion Hall according to our theme, Starlight, These girls and much of the student body put a lot of work on the decorations. The Student Council feels that this was one of our most successful Homecomings, for both students and their parents were made more aware of the school. FRONT ROW: Tom Johnson, Jane Nieman, George Appleby Sandra Ott Leo Milleman COUNCIL Throughout the year Student Council has sponsored several fine assemblies and lecture-type programs. Among them were the Thanks- giving and Christmas programs, which high school students not only participated in but also planned. Another of the Council's main projects was the holiday dance. We departed from tradition and had an informal hop instead of a semi-formal dance. Peter McClain of KWMT was the DJ for the evening This dance, too, was a big success. Student Council inaugurated another new project this year- that of the Christmas decorations contest. Student Council purchased enough decorative candles for each window on the west side of the I-uilding. The homerooms decorated these windows with Christmas lights and balls, and the students voted on the best one. On December 17 the window lights were switched on for the first time. This ceremony was followed by a program of carol singing by the student body. The Council's purpose was to increase the students' awareness of school activities. As tomorrow's teachers, these students plan for their careers. Through active club meetings and actual practice, the girls learn what will be expected of them when they hold their own classes. The Future Teachers major project this year was attending Prospective Teachers Day at Cedar Falls on the campus of the State College of iowa. Other activities included observing and teaching for a week in various grade school classes and in county programs at Royal and at Greenville-Rossie where Mr. Ryan was the guest speaker. These projects were designed to aid the mem- bers in deciding whether or not to enter the teaching pro- fession after graduation. Miss Claire Powell is the club's sponsor. HEALTH CAREERS The purpose of Health Careers is to provide an opportunity for any high school student, boy or girl, to become acquainted with the various fields of medicine. The Club was formerly known as Future Nurses, but the group decided to change it to Health Careers so that all students interested in medicine could join. We had no male members this year, but hope to have in coming years. This year the group profited by a trip to Sioux City, Diane Sundeen, Barbara Breidinger, Lynn Hanson, Kathy Weiskircher. where they toured hospitals and schools of nursing. ln order to provide funds for this trip, the group held an annual Christmas Tea, sold baked goods, and held other money making projects. The community profited by the club's help at the Clay County Polio Clinic and at the Crippled Children's Clinic. Miss Betty Barton, school nurse, is the adviser. Under the leadership of Dave Simington, chapter president and Dave Schmid, vice-president, the Spencer FFA Chapter enjoyed another year full of accomplish- ments and recognition. We launched the year's activities with a top-ranked performance at the Clay County Fair. We built and displayed the grand champion agricultural exhibit, placed lith out of 58 teams in the livestock judging contest, and won a red ribbon on a demonstation on farm chemicals. Dave Schmid again demostrated his herdsmanship ability when his pen of three market burrows were named grand champion over 267 other entries in the show. Otto Clausen, Mike Toelle, Paul Schmid and Bennet Johanson attended the National FFA Convention in Kansas City where they observed one of our graduate 70 A. members, Richard Hummel, receive the highest degree in our organization, the American Farmer Degree. At the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo our dairy judging team composed of Tom Juza, John Weiskircher won a gold award rating in dairy judging and was named the top team in lowa in the dairy pedigree class. We were host to our parents and friends at a Parent and Son Banquet at Stub's Ranch Kitchen during National FFA Week. We entertained our parents with a complete program put on by our own chapter members. Dave Kaus and Steve Ball, with a narrated, colored slide presentation on chapter activities, highlighted the evening. iff gi' ' T ' wi 1 Yi? . The organization under the direction of Miss Dow held its busi- ness meetings the first Monday of each month. The gym was available to them every Monday and Wednesday after school. Basketball, trampoline, softball, volleyball, bowling, and ping-pong are just a few of the activities in which the GRA members participated. All high school girls are eligible for GRA membership. QUnder the point system which has been set up the girls are required to earn one hundred points before becoming active members. Letters are awarded to those who have earned five hundred points, and a state GRA pin is awarded to those who earned one thousand points. A GRA member may earn four points an hour by participating in various sports. Every month a special activity is planned. A picnic was held in Sep- tember and a bowling party in October. For initiation in January the new members wore white blouses and black ties to carry out this year's theme, The Underworld. The girls' trampoline team performed before an enthusiastic crowd during halftime of the basketball game January 25th. The band again had a very suc- cessful year, of which Spencer High can be proud. The band was chosen as one of the top five bands in the United States to appear at the Mid-West National Band Clinic held at the Sherman House in Chicago, Illinois, on December 22. Although many hours of extra practice were needed to prepare such a concert, the band was well rewarded by being named the top band to appear 80 at the Clinic and receiving the only standing ovation. Mr. Dean was presented a medal for his outstanding work as a band director and for his selection as director of the United States of America High School Band during the summer of 1962. The Pep Band, Marching Band, and Pit Band all did their share in boosting school spirit. The Pep Band, led by this year's student director, Dick Kunz, played at each home game during the basketball season. The Pit Band played for the pep meetings. CHOIR The Spencer High School Mixed Chorus had a very successful year under the direction of Mr. Haendler. For the tall concert, the choir presented Songs of Paradise Valley, followed by the Christmas concert, Songs for Our King. Included in the programs were solos and madrigal groups. This year the choir had a cantata for Easter entitled, No Greater Love and the annual spring concert, which proved to be very thrilling to both the audience and the choir. Both the High School Choir and the Eighth Grade Choir took part in the Clay County Music Festival which is held each year in January. Guest director this year was Mr. Gordon Ohlesson from Coe College. The festival was concluded with a song combining the band and choir. 84 Again this year one of the quartets attended the Northwest Iowa Choral Festival at Cherokee and learned much about choral singing. Many small groups and soloists backed up the choir at the special meetings, concerts, and contests. The highlights of the season came when the Spencer High School Choir sponsored the appearance of the Augustana College Choir, directed by Mr. Arnold Running. The choir rounded out a fine year in their final ap- pearance at Baccalaureate and Commencement. Special recognition is due to the accompanists who were Diane Appleby, Alice Bellows, and Dawn Lehman. TH ESPIANS e,eea Thespian Society, which is affiliated with the National Thespian Society, is an organization devoted to the ad- vancement of dramatic arts in secondary schools. Initiation was held in February. Its dignity provided significant impressions on all who attended. Formal initiation serves as encouragement for individual members to advance in the field of speech, dance, music, and writing. Many of the members received op- portunities to attend Broadway plays throughout the season. A professional troupe from New York presented Tom Sawyer on our Spencer stage. The Spencer Drama Club received an honorary organizational membership as a result of their annual scholarship to an outstanding junior actor and Mr. W. P. Halloran, a local businessman re- ceived an honorary membership for his generous support of the department. Rich Fellingham .....s President Heidi Keir s,s,,,ea.. Secretary Vicki Porter .,s,,,sv..
