This farm, located in south Spencer, was given to the chapter by Miss Brugman. This makes it possible for town boys to have the same opportunity for proiects as the boys living in the country. Another pro- vision is to encourage the town boys as well as the farm boys who are interested in some phase of agriculture to prepare themselves for the future through vocational agriculture. There is also a demonstration farm located on land owned by the Spencer Plant Foods Company. Bob Cloud, the manager of the plant, gave the boys eighteen acres for demon- stration and teaching purposes. This gives the boys an opportunity to supervise the farm and solve such problems as they may have on their own farms someday. On this farm the boys have planted several different brands of oats grasses, beans and corn to see how they will react under the conditions of this area. Another program being carried out is a meat certification program. All members are being encouraged to raise a meat type hog. The mem- ber having the best program will receive a trophy from the Kiwanis Club of Spencer. Since one hundred per cent of the boys en- rolled in vocational agriculture are members of F.F.A., only the contests for which they are properly prepared are entered. This year the chapter won four gold awards and one silver at the sub-district level, and the same at the district contest. Awards received at the state contest were for the reporter's scrapbook, and the parliamentary procedure team. A few of the members attended the national convention in Kansas City. Russell Blanchfield played in the state FFA band and Wayne Chamberlain sang in the na- tional chorus in Kansas City. Herb Hoover, president of the Spencer club this year, received the Star Farmer Award for northwest Iowa at the state convention. He was elected to serve as state president for the 1956-57 year. Raising money for the club has been hard, but also fun. Members used their spare time to pick up corn, while the others caught live pigeons to sell. A large per cent of the mem- bers took part in selling garden seeds and working at the check stand at basketball games. They also worked concessions at a basketball game, and sold mixed feed at the Farmer's Co- op Elevator. The chapter, under the leadership of the new president, Jim Thurier, and advisor, Mr. Duin, will carry out the meat certification plan. A bigger and better chapter is planned. -47- i Back Row Nlarulyn Johnson Valera Rose Dons Baker Marcheta Olhausen Judy Brunk Nancy Rorah Cnndy McCurdy Second Row Lola Mlncer Helen Flugum Lucnlle McBroom Patty Beck Sandra Freeburg Beverly Ewnng Lola Roberts Karen Stouffer Front Row Sandra Rnchards Rosamae Lawrence Jane Wnlknnson Mutzn Anderson Judy Perry Kay Anderson Janet Wollarn FHA The gurls began the year on the hometront wuth the local F FA provudlng the pheasants for a lolnt dinner and party the gurls were the chief cooks A trip to a dlstrlct conventuon ID Graettlnger was also a fall hnghlught Around the World and Back Agaln he theme of a foreign foods dlnner was one of the bug events of the year The gurls tasted dnshes from Mexnco Germany Italy and many other countrues Back Row Valera Rose Marcheta Olhausen Judy Brnnk Front Row Patty Beck Nancy Rorah Beverly Ewnng The gurls even saw part of the U S on thenr fneld trap to Sioux Falls They vnsrted Morrell s Packing Plant a children s home a bakery and a children s hospital Thus years F H A group was represented an the state organlzatnon by Mntzu Anderson who served as State Hlstoruan Representatnves to the state convention were Beverly Ewing Mar cheta Olhausen and Judy Brink The oftncers for thus year were the tollowung President Vuce Presrdent Secretary Treasurer Parllamentarlan Hlstorlan News Reporter Song Leader Marcheta Olhausen Beverly Ewnng Judy Brink Nancy Rorah Kay Kahley Patty Beck Valera Rose Dons Baker GZ Back Row Mary Koehnk Janet Anderson Terry Loeschen Bob Talley Brnan Myhr Rzcha Row Barb Blornstad Mary Bergstrom Lulala Pavars Ardell Wenmers Sue Heald Candy M Avery Janeen Johnson Lows Chnstopherson Delores Ayres Julia Brower Sybnl Norton Honor Society .-Q rd Sorenson Penny Kruse Second cCurdy Karen Whrte Front Row Sue The officers for the Natlonal Honor Soclety This year, as usual the Socnety met after the thus year were Terry Loeschen presrdent, De sensor class nlght program and elected officers lores Ayres, vlce president and Lrllla Pavars, forthe coming year Future Teachers A Future Teachers Club was organzzed This Schmerse, vice presudent Mary Dawson, secre year The club consnsts of seventeen members tary Lois Chrnstopherson, treasurer and Janice and an advrsor Mass Powell The ofhcers In Mslleman, parllamentarlan clude Barbara Bgornstacl presldent Sandra Installation of offncers was held on March 28 Bock Row Jo Hellstedt Mary Dawson Arlene Emery Carol Coverdale Jamce Mulleman Sandra Schrnerse Sharon Harras Front Row Loretta Gannon Sue Avery Loss Chrrstopherson Barbara Bgornstad Candy McCurdy Bonme Fntzloff -49- 5 Back Row: Tommy Lynch, Bob Booth, Roger Snyder, Robert Long, Bob Ross, Bill Anderson, Mike Richards. Tom Gordon welcomed the guests. Acting as moderator, Terry Loeschen expressed pleasure for the opportunity to show respect to the grad- uating class. Don Tyrrell responded by thank- ing the hosts for a pleasant experience. The main speakers of the evening were Superin- tendent W. F. Johnson and Mr. Dale E. Norton. The banquet ended by Tom Gordon's wishing all present an enjoyable evening. The banquet tables were decorated with rosette napkin holders of red, chartreuse, and black. Petite flower vases holding red daisies were placed intermittently on the tables. A colorful centerpiece depicting a coolie pulling a ricksha lent its splendor to the head table. Sophomore girls dressed in short, figured, coolie outfits served the meals and checked coats. Soft lights and Vance Dixon's sweet music supplied a charming atmosphere for the dance. Providing an oriental flavor to the dance floor was a miniature footbridge with a trickling stream beneath it. A life-like palm tree stood near the bridge. Entertainment during the dance included two modern dance numbers by Dorothy Jeck of Spirit Lake, a soprano solo by Sharon Gilchrist, and a clarinet solo by Peggy Felt. As the last strains of music faded away, the guests left the dance with many pleasant mem- ories ofa wonderful prom in Griental Gardens. With a deadly set shot he earned All-Conference 2nd team. Larry Peanuts Fie was the team captain, leading scorer and M.V.P. during the season. He rated All-Conference lst team and All-State 5th team. Dick Kud Knudsen was one of the regular post men throughout the year. With his tall frame and huge hands he grabbed more than his share of rebounds and tip-ins. Terry Honer Jones was a regular forward and second leading scorer. His specialty was a jump shot which helped him gain All-State Hon- orable Mention. Les Grizzly Hintz was the other half of the double post. Along with being a very steady performer, he was the top rebounder on the squad. Lance Rubner Blue won the Terrible Tiger award this year. This guard showed a wonderful attitude along with his fine ball handling. Bob Begus Arndt, smallest man on the squad, turned in many fine performances at his guard position by stealing the ball and making LES HINTZ LANCE BLUE crucial buckets. Gus Junior Peters, guard, was the fire- baIl of the squad. This energetic iump shooter kept up the much needed chatter and pep. Gary Bloomers Bloom, a junior guard, dis- played a fine attitude and a good long one- handed set. .lack Stick Stilwell, a hook shooter, is a iunior center and forward. Don Alfred Wolford is a senior who has, through his tough rebounding and aggressive play and great desire, helped develop the post- men for the last two years. Terry Tater Tate, iunior forward, was an- other reserve who put forth his all. Terry was an accurate set shooter. Paul Sarg Gerdes was moved to the B- squad where he sparked them in rebounding and hustle. Paul will be counted on next year to duplicate that for the A-squad. Craig Gook Johnson was a steady reserve forward who was probably the most deadly shotmaker on the squad. The two reliable and hard working managers this year were Charley Brains Thoreson and Jack Brawn Sullivan. The Spencer thinclads of 1956 progressed very rapidly, ancl appeared to be reaching their peak with the season at the half way mark. Under the leadership of Coach Bucky Wolter, the Tigers started out the season by winning a triangular meet with Fort Dodge and Mason City by one point. This was a good test for the Tigers, and Bucky was able to find some boys who were regular point getters. The next meet was the Pocahontas Relays and the Tigers made a very good showing, but they still ended second, just eight points out of first place. Dur- ing these two meets the school records in the shot put and discus were broken by Andy An- derson, an outstanding athlete transferred from a California school. Spencer then took in the Tomahawk Relays and could only manage a sixth place. The Tigers showed a great weak- ness in this meet when they were unable to place in any of the long distance races. How- ever, the Tiger distance men then started to go to work, and make good showings in the next few meets. A triangular meet was next and Spencer walked away first in almost every event, and won the meet easily. The Sac Relays found the Spencer thinclads again placing sec- ond, this time behind Sioux City Heelan. In this meet Max Huffman tied the school record in the hundred yard dash. The Tiger's remain- ing track meets were the Spencer Relays, Drake Relays, Estherville Relays, Trojan Relays, Dis- trict, Conference, and State. The Tigers had more and better facilities than they had had in previous years. Among these were weights and barbells which were a great aid in the weight department. Spencer had a schedule of twelve track meets. However, bad weather put a halt to a couple of them and they were unable to be re-scheduled due to con- flicts. -77- Baseball Coach Bob Stldolphs boys fared very well thus year In this second year of cross country the team won flve dual meets two each from Worthington and Sheffield and one from Have lock They dropped a triangular from two of the top schools In the state Des Moines North and Des Molnes Lincoln In state competltuon at Ames they placed fifth out of ten In the Mule Team Race and slxth of nlneteen In the Cross Country Race Back Row Butch Schenkelberg Bob Speer Gary Olson Les Hnntz Dennis Halbach Coach Don Ferguson Front Row Jam Wedel Bob Arndt Ty Thayer Herb Hoover Larry Fee Lance Blue Jerry Carey The 1955 Tigers had a seasons mark of eight wins and four losses They were beaten In the district by Bancroft St Johns 4 3 Lone Rock admlnlstered three of those losses The Spencer wlns were over Greenville Rossle Ruthven Graettlnger Storm Lake Sutherland twlce Sanborn Ocheyedan Only two seniors will be mlsslng from the 55 squad coached by Ball Wendlandt Cross Country Back Row Coach Bob Studolph Crang Johnson Bob Scholes Bob Ross Gary Bloom Front Row Jum Thuurer Tom McCurdy Rxchard Munnnck Jum Wedel Uwggq 5 I ' a 'ff , 1 - L L .
