The first act begins and we see the band, under the direction of Mr. Robert Dean, fancy stepping it at the football games at Hart Field. Each home game, despite the crisp September and October weather, the band performs its original and clever marching routines. Now, the Homecoming Parade, with its brightly col- ored floats and cars, winds its way through the main streets of Spencer with the Band in the lead. At the Homecoming game the Band presents an extra special half-time show featur- ing the mock-crowing of their so-called Horne- coming Queen. The Queen cruises onto the field in her hopped-up ialopy, as the Band rings out with The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi , and comes to a halt in front of the howling audience to be crowned with a flower pot. The scene is climaxed when the band is invited to march at a college football game being played at Carleton College. Act two, the annual Winter Band Show is under way. Act two, scene two, and soloists and small ensembles make a grand showing at the District Music Contest staged at Estherville. Perry is the scene of the next con- test where the winners of the District Contest compete at the State Music Contest. The Class A and B schools meet here for the State Music Contest, large group division, climaxing Act two. At the basketball games we see that the pep band has expanded its membership to forty members. It fills up the entire north balcony at the new fieldhouse and makes the atmos- -45- phere complete with its peppy and inspiring marches and school songs. The curtain rises for the finale, Act three, and we find the Spencer High Band presenting a second concert, their annual Spring Band Show. A fitting end for a brilliant performance is a three day invitational trip to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where the band is engaged to play at the National Music Educators Conference. As the curtain of 1953 falls, the applause rings loudly for the honors the band has brought to Spencer High School.
