Mr. Dean was really working the Senior High Concert Band in its pieces for contest at Denison on May 3. And the work certainly paid off. The band showed all the polish they had been striving for when the three pieces were played for the judge. These were El Capi- tan by Sousa, Symphony in B flat by Fauchet, and The Royal Fireworks Music by Handel. In state solo and ensemble com- petition the band members received twenty- two I ratings, a new record in Spencer High history. But contest was only the climax of all that the band had been working for all year. As in years past, two band shows were given. December 12, and April 19. Both of these shows were complete with emcees, lighting effects, theme, and feature numbers. They gave shows for the State Teachers Convention held in Des Moines, the Tri-County Institute in Spencer, Career Day, the dedication of Spencer's new gymnasium, and the Northwest Iowa School Board Convention, And who directs this wonderful band? The band members would all say, the best band director in the country. He has won every member's admiration and respect, and above all he is everybody's good friend. He has been on the music faculty in Spencer for the past six years. During this time he has de- veloped one of the best bands in the state which is shown by the fine record in state competition. So special mention must be made of Bandmaster Robert Dean. Then the band went inside for the Winter, but at the first sign of spring they were out again. This time their practice ground was not the football field, but the street. On May 21 the band gave a mati- nee and evening demonstration on the Grand Avenue in Spencer. A highlight in the high school choir s year s work was the presentation of light opera on February 27 under the direction of Robert Pfaltzgraff The first part of the program was a choral adaptation of favorite melodies by Sigmund Romberg and from Brigadoon The second part was an operetta 1n one act entitled Down in the Valley by Weill and Sundgaard. The principal parts were played by Kay Nielsen and Bob Schmid. f' if 44 A f Q ',- ww: ta, A - '4 J' if ' 2,- . FX Q ,ff ' , , , .?3.e- 5 W .
