In vain we build the world. unless the builder also grows. -Edwin Markham We count service on the board of education an honor and a trust even though it imposes a great re- sponsibility and requires a large amount of time. Our real compensation in serving on such a board comes in observing progress and success of the student and graduate and contributing to the welfare of youth. We are proud of the success our students show when scholastic comparisons and competitive features are involved. The success of our graduates generally in higher institutions is gratifying. The board is at- tempting to improve the school facilities and oppor- tunities as evidenced by the new gymnasium-shops building, remodeling in the high school, addition of a special education department, and curriculum develop- ment. You can make our job an enjoyable one by your continued success and happiness. We extend our congratulations to the seniors and year book staff. l am pleased to accept the invitation to greet the student body of Spencer High School through the pages of this fine annual. l extend hearty congrat- ulations to those graduating this year and to the staff of this yearbook. The future will demand staunch hearts and strong minds of all of you and we have confidence in your ability to answer the call lt has been pleasant during the school year to observe your sincere ef forts to develop your talents and to prepare for service and responsibility In adult life We count on you to continue your fine endeavors and to be a credit to yourself your family your community and Spencer High School You have our best wishes for success and happiness Supt W F Johnson lSlllAllll lm sure congratulations are In order for the student body of Spencer High School Your work has been outstanding your conduct indicative of good citizenship I m sure the year 1951 has many fine things in store for you Grasp its many oppor tunities through foresight and hard work You will make yourself more successful and this a better world in which to live Mr William Bolt , - ,r 1? Momentous because the Homecoming Parade was first introduced. The two block long parade featured fifteen floats, the Spencer High School Marching Band and a delegation of horsemen. The queen and her attendants made their initial appearance at the special Homecoming assembly. Jo- anne Doraman was crowned Homecoming Queen by Don DeKoster, Student Body President. ,.,-,--- ' in Homecoming Parade l95l The queen and her attendants made the traditional walk across the football field between halves of the Spencer- Sheldon game while the band played Let Me Call You Sweetheart. An excellent climax to the homecoming festivities was the I9 to 7 Tiger win over the Sheldon Orabs. Not all the time has been taken in browsing, however, for the members of the club were taken on conducted tours through both the public and school libraries. Book reviews were given of books especially enjoyed by the members. The group learned how to mend books and took up parliamentary procedure. The club prepared a float for Homecoming and also planned several parties for added enjoyment. Officers chosen were: Mary Elvin, president, Joanne Dorman, secretary-treasurer, Carolyn Carey, reporter: and Miss Bumann, sponsor. The F. H. A., a nationally organized club of young homemakers has had a varied program of activities this year. Under the leadership of Miss Lamborn, the group has undertaken many different projects to help them in future homemaking. They planned, cooked. and served breakfast for the entire group, had skits pertaining to better homemaking, and undertook craft work. For social activities they planned parties such as skating at the local roller skating rink. Miss Akin Instructs Bridge Club BRIDGE The Contract Bridge Club had a large enrollment, forty-five, the first semester. Imagine the confusion of the first meetings when everyone wanted individual help and only the sponsor, Miss Akin, knew what to do next. She kept helping here and there, always mumbling under her breath. After careful listening the club discovered her distress. Why can't l get hands like these at parties? The first thing necessary was to explain even the simplest things, order of dealing, meaning of trump suits, and dummy-this was the word that stumped everybody. Most of the members decided there were always four dummies at their table. The second semester Miss Akin had an assistant. Mrs. Sonner took the twenty-four beginners, and Miss Akin continued with experienced members. They feel that now they could probably beat Culbertson, whose rules they use. SEATED: Max lrwin, Katherine Pannell, Gary Rogers, Clair Larson, Laura Pannell, Clysta Meyer, Dennis CHESS Although the Chess Club was comparatively small. every member enjoyed it. Mr. Appleby, the sponsor, enjoys the game and is very much interested in it. The main thing the club did was play Chess. The first few meetings were spent in discussing rules and the object of chess, and watching the more experi- enced players play. All the members paired off according to their play- ing experience. There were sometimes as many as six games going at once and most of the members were very successful in learning the game. Johnson, Joyce Tercey. Every other Wednesday if you go onto the stage, you will find the Dancing Club doing just this. Forty-four members took part in the activities of the club. The main goal of the sponsors, Miss Steuck and Miss Powell, was to teach the members the fundamentals of social dancing. Night meetings and a spring party were planned for the latter part of the year. First semester officers were Marian Brownell, presidentg Hardee Ball, secretary-treasurer. Meetings were held every other Wednesday during the regular club period. The twenty boys who belonged first se- mester chose the following officers: president, Roger Erickson, vice-president, Rollin Reardon: and secre- tary, Tom Mann. The club purpose this year was to develop some skill in simple food preparation and, of course, as the girls all know, dishwashing always goes along with cooking, so the boys develop some skill in that, too. Nothing seemed to discourage the boys, not even burned pancakes. They learned to cook pancakes, peanut brittle, chocolate cake, spaghetti, broiled hamburgers, and stuffed wieners. Spencer 58 Emmetsburg 41 ln the E'Hawk-Tiger game the cat ran the birdie all over in score and in ability to handle the ball. Bill Birch- ard's 18 points were deciding factors. Spencer 38 Sibley 36 Sibley, the Conference trailers, gave the Tigers a hard- fought battle and the spectators a game to be remem- bered. Spencer 52 Cherokee 44 Tigers mauled the Braves in this game to even up an old score of defeat. Cherokee came on with a terrific on- slaught in the first quarter, but couldn't hold the angry five opponents. This gave Spencer high hope for a Con- ference Title. Spencer 53 Sheldon 4'l This game proved that speed and accuracy not height makes the team. Spencer's shorter guards effectively bottled up the Orabs' taller forwards. Spencer 58 Fort Dodge 52 Spreading their games over more territory, the Tigers outdid distance and bus-riding fatigue to turn in a sur- prising victory over the A. A. Dodgers. Spencer 52 Emmetsburg 48 The E'Hawks, determined to win after their previous 64 loss to Spencer, kept a lead part way in the game until the determination of Spencer not to relinquish their place in Conference standing brought them another victory. Spencer 63 Storm Lake 76 The crushing blow to the Bengals came from Storm Lake. This game decided that Spencer would tie for first place in the Conference instead of a clear title win. Spencer 58 Estherville 49 The Midgets' Don Weber and the Tigers' Don DeKos- ter, about as evenly matched pair of centers as can be found, played their hearts out in this game with the deciding factor lying in the hands of the two teams' for- wards. Spencer 47 Spirit Lake 42 The family feud between father and son Webb ended with the A game going to SPGYTCCYS COBCH. Austin Shearer. Catherine Wells representing the Junior Class, Alden Avery, school board, and A. W. Salisbury, the faculty, were speakers on the toast program. Leta Peterson played Blue Skies, Mary Muetzel sang Alice Blue Gown, and Mr. Robert Pfaltzgraff sang ln the Blue of Evening. Along with the floor show and the music of Reggie Shives and his orchestra, the prom was a grand success, and as many have said, the best Spencer High has ever had! Mr. Ralph Pierce and his show of mystify- ing magic entranced the students in an en- tertaining assembly. His vanishing head act featuring Connie Whitaker, was one of the outstanding tricks. ASSlMlllllS Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Yung Lee and their program en- titled, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, proved to be K one of the most interesting assemblies of the year. Their program included Chinese vocal and instrumental music, f customs and language. . rr' -.1 . ,, an Q Mg il' sa. Xi The Kilties, a Scottish troupe of five, headed by a former F. B. I. chief, William Nimmo, was another as- sembly of the year. During the course of their program they related Scottish customs, dress, and music. Attired in Scottish uniforms they sang and played the bagpipes. ASSlNllllIlS Scientific lecturer C. E. Jones, popular and well-known in Spencer High, gave another interesting and worth- while assembly entitled Beyond the Rainbow, featuring electricity in the form of color. A different type of assembly was given by this acrobat team. They featured tumbling. weight-lifting and acrobatics. Mr. James Coletta, United States Intelligence officer 'X was well received by the students. The former sculptor joined the American Military lntelligence and trained Qi as a counter intelligence agent in the United States. fx Coletta, a speaker of seven languages, is touring the Di' states and has spoken in many countries. f v 0- B' S f, I i L x BACK ROW: B. IIIIIIS' A very newly organized group in Spencer High is the Girls' Council. Members of this organization were chosen from each of the four classes. As there is a student council to direct student affairs, so there has been organized a girls' council to direct and aid problems of the girls of the student body. The girls can voice any problem they might have Cllll llll to the council and this body in turn will contact Miss Powell. A meeting is then called to remedy the problem. This organization, although new this year, will undoubtedly be in existence for years to come. Officers chosen were Annie Schenkelberg, presi- dent: Darlene Rieg, secretary-treasurer.
