During the summer a floor will be laid over the present study hall that is two stories high. The study hall will be cut to one-half its present size in order to provide for a visual education room in the remainder of the space on that floor while overhead a library equal to the new study hall in size and two class rooms will be built. They have arranged with an architect to draw specifications for bids on a new gym voca- tional shops and other additions. A remedial reading program was added to the ele- mentary school curriculum and also a course in speech correction work. The Board is also developing a new athletic field in track. Mrs. Marie Sonner served as president of the Board this year Floyd Campbell as vice- president and Lulu Flint secretary and Carl Tuttle treasurer. An advertising depart- ment was added to our staff and ad men replaced the circulation staff in being the chief breadwinners. The paper was printed by the Times and all the work in both the advertising and journalistic fields was done by Miss Bryan and the student staff. Every two weeks an issue appeared. Many com- plimentary comments heralded the new look of Tiger Tempos. A fitting climax was the selection of our paper as one of the top six high school papers in the state and honors received from the national contest sponsored by the Tuberculosis Association. The Spencer High School A Cappella Choir climaxed a busy year by again winning a division one rating in state contest among class A choirs. This marks the fourth year for such a rating. As a matter of fact, the choir has received a division one rating ever since its beginning. The selections sung at contest were: Hallelujah by Randell Thompson A CAPPELLA and Oh Love So Brief from Grief to Glory by F. Melius Christensen. Robert Pfaltzgraff, a graduate of Drake University, was the choir director and vocal music instructor this year. Mr. Pfaltzgraff has done a fine job with the vocal music department. Five other groups from the department were also entered in state music contest: madrigal group, girls' Fourth Row: l.ffC11':r': Srmil., Dill O Inari Divyi Ei-7' 111, 311-2 ?1'1Q'l'.-J.:1 lllll Sl,'I'.'J ffrry L' T' 111 Tw: ttf :1 T,ITllv,lGllll, l.,cyf1E1ss11f-1,'.'. :g:11- Zc1:g1?. The choir ap- peared in concert in two outstanding per- formances given during the year. The first was the annual Christmas concert. Candle- lighting was used very effectively to open and close the concert, arranged in three parts-the first and last being serious and re- ligious, the middle one a comic scene of a Winter gathering after a sleigh r1de. A spring concert, which also featured the five small groups, was presented to a school assembly shortly before contest. The choir, in its purple and gold robes, was one of the largest the school has had, numbering eighty-three students. FOOTBALL VARSITY Spencer6 She1don7 Beautiful blocking made way for Mervin Roggow's end sweep to complete a touch- down. Iames and Selzer with Gordon Lockey and Phil Tyrrell took honors on defensive play. Failing on the extra point, the Tigers took to the air in the last minutes only to fall short 7-6. Spencer 6 Emmetsburg 6 In this very evenly matched game Iunior Goedicke was playing his best game of the year by sparking the Tigers on. Spencer couldn't quite click but held the Bulldogs even when they were down to the three-yard line with four downs to go. Lee Iames, Don Con- lon, Rich McVey and Orlyn Steffen showed very well. Spencer6 Cherokee 6 Don Conlon and Lowell Hitchcock did a wonderful job in running plays but were never able to hit pay dirt. Most of the time was spent punting until in the second quarter Lee Iames went over for a touchdown. In the third quarter Cherokee made a 65-yard run to tie the game. Spencer 6 Alqona 27 Spencer, weakened by the loss of four of its choice players, met a strong Algona team. Spencer's lone score was made by Paul Bill- ings in the second half climaxing a 54-yard drive. The cold made it hard for passing but in the last quarter Gordon Lockey made a thrilling break only to have an oflside pen- alty nullify it. Spencer 47 Spirit Lake 0 In the last minutes of the first quarter Rich McVey intercepted an Indian pass to run 50 yards for the first touchdown. Iunior Goedicke connected with a Iarnes pass to run 33 yards for the second touchdown. With these points and the line breaking the holes Iames and Billings were able to roll up 47 points. ,. SECCDND TEAM The B squad footballers, under the direction of Kenneth Griffin, had what looks like a dis- appointing season on paper. They won one game, tied one, and dropped three. But the actual experience, and knowledge of compet- itive situations gained by the boys in these games is invaluable. They demonstrated their ability to work together as a close knit unit and found that it takes eleven men to make a team. If all these things are learned and done well any season is successful even though the scores don't end in our favor. SPIISOIIQS Record Terrill . . . Estherville . Terrill . . . Estherville .
