Losing only to Cherokee by one point, a defeat later avenged. and to previously beaten Esther- ville after the loop title had been won, the Spencer cagers chalked up lZ victories over Lakes conference opponents. In addition they defeated Jefferson. Milford twice. split a pair of games with Evcrly. and were defeated by LeMars, runners up in the state tourney. ln tournament competition the Tigers were eliminated in the sub-state meet at LeMars by East High of Sioux City. 24-40, after defeating Ruthven in sectional and Spirit Lake and Shcldon in district compctition. John Cornwall, all-conference forward and co-captain, was an all-around team man and exceptionally good shot. Bob Morrow. a long-shot artist, was particularly affective against a zone defense, while Kenny Steffen, handicapped by a knee injury, excelled in the defensive Jack Olesen Jerrv Murphy' 1946 CAGERS part of the game. Bill Magness, another all-conference selection, who usually was assigned to guard the high scorer of the opposition. also connected many times with his one-handed push shots. Kenny DeKoster was the rebound artist of the team, while Co- Captain Bob Buum scored his share of points and was very effective off the bank board. Jack Olesen developed into an alert ball hawk. . Jim Nlorony. John Culver, and Jerry Murphy. whileinot-seeing as much action, were strong rcplacementsg they supplied the pep and did much for the team's morale. Of the first I0 players on the squad, only DeKoster and Magness will be back next year to defend the Lakes conference crown. The unsung heroes, appropriately called the 'Chopping Blocks and not pictured here, were Duane Hansen, Duane XVeisbrod, Jim Rasmussen, and Ray Schwartz. lt was they who were faithfully present for all scrimmage sessions to take the punishment from the new plays and experiments.
