SPENCERIAN I943 THE I943 SPENCERIAN Volume XV. Published by 2 JACQUELYN SHAW, Editor 2 ROBERT DUNNING , , : KENNETH LARSENF Co-Business Managers : J. W. KNUDSEN. Adviser We're bah d J We're on the way FORWARD Another year of school life filled with joy and happiness tempered with, perhaps, a little worry and sorrow has passed. Another year in which all young people have prepared and gir- ded themselves with knowledge for the better meeting of the tlying days facing them ahead. The future will demand staunch hearts and strong minds of its youth, and we are answering that call with the full, un- Stlnting sacrifice of our young men and women doing their utmost to attain the ultimate goal, peace for all. We are not afraid to look into our future where we see bright paths of happiness and success stretching out before our eager, seeking minds and hearts. May we fulfill our pledge to the world and to our country, and may our failh triumph over our fears. ,ease- F fm X JE TENSHUNH' +41 - Farewell, Mr. Test! Mr. Test at one of his usual tasks Yes, farewell to our principal, Mr. Lowell B. Test. He has served on the Spencer faculty for eleven and one-half years. He has attended Iowa University and Morningside, came here from Sanbom. Established the student council conference in the Lakes Conference, which is an annual affair held in Spencer, and also instigated the vocational conferences held locally the last few years. He served as secretary for the Lakes Conference Schools for several years. He always enjoyed beating certain students and teachers to the building in the mornings. He par- ticularly enjoyed holding tournaments, contests, and conferences. Also liked fishing and pheasant hunting. He resigned his position here and is now serving as Deputy Collector for the Internal Revenue Sewice of the Treasury Department, stationed in Fort Dodge. Mr. Test was a real guy when it came to winning the admiration of the student body and it's certain that no one of us will forget him. Hello, Mr. Jackson! Mr. T. Eldon Jackson We extend our most cordial welcome to Mr. T. Eldon Jackson, our new principal of Spencer High. Although he joined our faculty only at mid-term, he is already the pal and adviser of every szudem. Mr. Jackson attended some of the better schools. among them Drake University, Denver University. and the Universities of Chicago and Colorado. The popular theory that all principals are stiff necked and cross has been completely shattered by Mr. Jackson's example. All doubts are dispelled at the first glance of that flashing smile and at the sound of his hearty laugh. His likes and dislikes are the same as the students he teaches. For band leaders, he favors Kay Kyser and Henry Busse. ln the movie line, Mr. jackson prefers Pop-eye and Bette Davis. One point that has hastened his popularity is Mr. jackson's many diversified interests and talents. Dancing, music, a jolly good humor, and fairness in all dealings have assured him an honored spot in our school. verse-- QW QQ LD HB Q? W. C. A. and fulfills the same needs for girls as the Y. W. C. A. does for women. The G. R. serves the purpose of giving high school girls an insight into the fellowship and enjoyment they may gain from their social and religious lives. At the first of the yeai a general theme is selected. This theme is then enlarged upon and presented to the girls through worship services, programs, and projects. The purpose this year was to make the girls world conscious, to acquaint them with neighboring lands and peoples. At one meeting scenes from many foreign countries were acted out showing how entirely differ- ent their lives were from ours, the hardships they have to undergo which girls of America know nothing about. During another program, songs were sung depicting the life in the South American countries. Two were written in their native Spanish: these were explained and pronounced before the girls attempted them. The song fest was closed by our own familiar melodies, including a few of the more popular numbers. One of the aims this year was to include every girl in some program during the year. This was accomplished by small plays and group singing. This spring a special program was presented for the mothers. Music and a group of poems presented by Mrs. Noel Champion, a mother of a G. R. girl, were featured. Following the program, a lovely tea was enjoyed by the girls and mothers. For their welfare projects, the G. R. had charge of the tuberculosis seal drive, clothing for refugees, and Christmas presents for the children of Spencer. The annual Sadie Hawkins Dance and Christmas Cantata were presented with the usual huge success. ..gQa913g.- THESPIANS Scx xpt Teasers Once agam the curtaln rlses on Drama Club lead by a new but capable pon or lVlss Betty Holdcroft This club met once every two weeks and selected plays they thought the student body would enjoy Thexr choxce consisted of one act plays that were both patrlotxc and humorous ln th me A patrlotlc play entitled For the Duration was presented by the club which made us all stop and thunk whether we were dolng our part toward peace and victory The characters ln the play were Helen Hummel a sensible patrlotlc mother Bob lraughber who drd a flne Job portrayed the part of a father buslly engaged xn a war production plant their son lm White who had been planmng a vacatlon and finally getting wxse and taking some good advice mvests his money m vsar bonds Grace Erickson the daughter made an acquamtance wnth a refugee Darrell Kmght wh ch added much to the play Bob Traughber Barbara Sxeh Helen Hummel John Hansen Cary Beall ack Van Kirk jim White fourth row Darrell Kmght Beverlv ones Anthony Rlepma can Anderson Fran McTngue thxrd rom Bern ce Ellerbroek Shirley Suhn Suzanne Long Clarlce Tatro l..aVonn Wilcox second row Marge MCTIQUC ,lo Anne Campbell Leona Carr Alice Wxlson Flavla Daly Betty Wood first rows Ken Booth Vxrg ma Murphy Los Enlnger Darlene lbl Margle ln man Not plctured Grace Erickson Bernie Hart Barre Hartman Shxrley Mcnger Esther Skrnner 254012 This year the club has a membership of thirty-three who are as shown in the group picture: top row, 11-l- Upper Left' The musrc goes down and round and hght comes out here Upper R 1 g h t Whats th1s thmg for Low er Left El ectrostatxcs Low er R 1 g h t Now here you Into the Fire We glve you the Modern Elnsterns That IS gettxng a llttle ragged and trlte but lt stlll best defmes our Scrence Club This club IS another which seems to be grvlng all of its time to profltable teachmg along subjects per tammg to the war For example they have studied morse code radio and have performed various exper llTlCIllS Morse code IS very essentxal rf you are planning on being a wireless operator or the like lt IS drffr cult to remember and to learn all of the various signals which are connected wxth morse code What rs a scrence labratory for rf not to perform experunents ln? G. A. A. Then comes volleyball, badminton, shuffleboard, and ping pong. Ping pong the last on the list, but not the least, occupies the time of quite a few of the members and very pleasantly at that. Ping pong is a more intricate game than some of the others chosen, but the complications add to the fun. Most of the members carry out their various projects during the summer. Golfing can be counted as well as tennis, bicycling and swimming. Swimming is probably the most successful of the sports for most of the girls have had experiece either at the pool or at the lakes. Of course along with the swimming goes life saving. A very important part, life saving itself takes a lot of skill and practice. And now the inspiring factor behind it all is their point system or in other words the members get a certain number of points for .participating in such things as badminton, basketball, volleyball, ping pong, golf, tennis, bowling, hikes, bicycling, and swimming. An hour of each of these is equivilant to four points, also every club period has the same point values. When by dilligent effort 250 points are finally to your credit, you receive a pin. Then with a greater effort and 500 points you are entitled to a letter and as the greatest and final effort you receive the state pin, which is the highest award and the most sought after goal of all G. A. A. members. The G. A. A. girls are lead by Miss Small, our gymn teacher, and by their officers Lois Fulton, president, lrmalee Whitcomb, vice president, Joan Resseguie, secretary-treasurer. One of the new clubs organized this year to our ever expanding outside activity list was Con- temporary Affairs. Under the leadership of C. Lester White the club has functioned as one on the study of current affairs of the worlcl. Their activities inclucle: the prophecy of the future, which incidentally usually prove to be wrong, map studies of foreign countries, and the discussion of current national, international and world-wide news. Their meetings were without a dull moment, for the fast changing world affairs furnished them with sufficient material to discuss. Particularly important are the open discussions which they have each club period. These bits of oratory are very important in that they improve their manner of speech and it gives everyone a chance to express his own opinion. With such whizzes as J. Dee Ferguson and Bill Loder in this club it proves how interesting the meetings can be. Members are: Kirby Anderson, Bill Loder, Arlo Marienau, Harold Bang, George Bezoni. Camera! of course these things play a big part in a setting, but what would a performance be without stage properties and make-up to create the effect for a more realistic back- ground? Here is your answer. A stagecraft club. Miss Crouse, the sponsor, has a group of fifteen to work with. The girls learn the correct way of putting on proper amounts of make-up, while the boys make stage properties. For example: the group met in the auditorium on the stage during club period, and everyone learned the fundamentals of stage settings. They have set up stage properties for the class plays and put make-up on the characters of the casts. One of the experiments which they accomplished was: several students would wear various amounts and colors of make-up to discover how different lights affected the shades of make-up. Throughout the year they have been working in co-operation with the art department at the West School in making scenery. Completing the first year as mentor of the Tigers making many improvements in the athletic system. Coach Luchsinger's activities have not been limited to outside athletics alone, rather a rigid physical fitness course has been established for every boy in high school. His training for coaching came from three sources, Drake U., lowa Preflight School and actual participation in athletics. Throughout the year his team has had the luck against them and several times emerged as a loser by a close margin. The coaching system being new and different, many problems came up which were ironed out: we are confident that next year Coach will guide his teams to the top of the conference. First off, let's tip the topper to the head man of the second team, Mr. Shearer, who almost always turns up with a good team. His job is to teach the boys the knowledge of basket- ball and football and to see they get the experience needed for varsity ball the next year. He has a certain way of putting things across so they really mean something to the players. This has been Mr. Shearer's l5th yea: as head of the reserves, and as his record shows he has considerable more wins than setbacks. Not only is he interested in basketball and foot- ball, but he is one of our leaders in track. So in the coming years may they be one's of luck and success to a regular fellow. ,stere- Oh, that Spirit Lake game Coach Luchsinger Mr. Shearer 1 A IL, FLOYD VERNER Pad , the sparlfplug of the team, suc- cessfully guided his mates through the sea- son. A good passer and occasionally a good ball carrier. Noted for getting through tough spots. MELVIN NEWCOMB Melv, the largest man on the team, was also the fastest. lvoted for running them down after they got away. The man with the educated toe will be greatly missed next year. For the second year he made the Alt- Conference team. JOHN DUCHARME A sophomore with a lol of ability. john played the wingbaclf position at the start of the season. A lot will be expected from him .n his two remaining years. BOB UNDERWOOD A small but shifty baclf who almost con- tfnual.y carried the ball. A good passer and a very good defensive player. Bob was also a first string All-Conference back. DICK LAWSON This short stocky fullback could almost always be counted on to piclf up a necessary two or three yards for a first down. Dictf was converted from a wingbactf to fullback in midseason. GEORGE SAYER Cas , a very big boy, played end and could always be depended upon to malfe yards from passes. Running around his end the opponents ran into a stone wall. George is a Senior. IRVIN COUGHENOUR Pulls played end for the Tigers and very capably at that. A touchdown pass receiver and a tough man on defense. This All-Conference player's shoes will be hard to fill next year. Q Guard that man -'iilbotisi WAYNE JOHNSON A rugged guard who always was loolg- ing for action. Could almost always be founil in the opponents baclgfield lvrealfing up the play. This is Wayne's last year. FRANK STRONG Frank always in there fighting, stopped many plays through the center of the line. A small boy but strong on defense and much improved in offense. DAVE NYREN Dave was one of our best men on defense almost always stopping the opponent when they tried his side of the line. As a senior this rugged player will be greatly missed. WAYNE DUGGLEBY Butch the line-baclfer who got just about all the taelfles that reached the secondary. On offense he opened holes in the line and he also did most of the puntfng for the Tigers. KEITH DARLINGTON Keith was transferred here in midseason and tool? over the winglvaclf position. A good passer and he also made several points for the Spencer eleven. ART DUNCAN Sharing the center duties with Strong, Art was especially strong on offense, blasting many holes in the opponents line. Always a rugged man on defense to get through. RAY SCHONING Ray a general utility man proved to be a high class sub. Most of his duties were at the tactile position, however, he also play- ed end. Ray was always sent in, in a tight spot with instructions. Mr. Shearer had the job of rounding out a team of rather inexperienced players, never having a complete regular team. The Cubs had a few bad breaks which cost them the game at Estherville. Showing spirit and drive in the early part of the game Spencer forged ahead in the other games only to have the score tiecl in the later moments of the game. t'Putts snagging one Showing power and drive, even though weather conditions were at their worst, Spencer won its first victory of the season from Sibley. Hendrickson and his line plunges showed up best for the Tigers. The Midgets of Estherville rolled over the team with great difficulty. The Tigers were beaten on a trick play which Estherville pulled in the third quarter, and also a missed extra point by Newcomb. Due to an injury Underwood was not able to play. Recovering Bob carrying the ball .gqteejje Scrimmage Skull sessions t'Hudclle Showing the lack of power here-to-for displayed, the Tigers agafn suffered a setback. Berg, Storm Lakeis shifty back, continually slipped by the line to make long gains. The team was again hampered by injuries. Underwood still being unable to play and Newcomb also still suffering a dislocated shoulder from the Estherville game. At full force again the team started the Emmeis- burg game very poorly having two touchdowns scored on them in the early stages of the game. The last half however showed a marked improvement and the Tigers scored two touchdowns only to have both extra points bobbled which in the end proved to be the margin of defeat. For the first time the Tigers unleashed their ground and air attacks and smothered the Sheldonites Underwood and Newcomb were outstanding for Spencer. Booting it Hitting 6 Again playing good ball, the team downed Cher- okee after a long bruising battle, neither giving in until the final gun was fired. After the first touch- down of Spencers the score became tied only to have the Tigers again take the lead and hold it throughout the game. Not playing the inspired game the team had before displayed, the Tigers barely out scored Algona. Algona threatened all through the game, and in a desperate effort at the end of the last quarter, they stalled I0 yards from paydirt. ln a story-book finish Spencer was caught flat- footed and beaten. Newcomb early in the game kicked a fieldgoal which until the last four seconds of the game was the margin between the two teams. EVERLY The first game of the season brought dis- aster to the fighting Tigers, Everly an experi- enced smooth working machine outplayed the team throughout the game, however, many of our shots rimed out instead of in. SPENCER VS, EMMETSBURG The Spencerites suffered its first defeat in conference competition. Emmetsburg's defense was weak but the shots of the Tigers couldn't hit the hoop. Mann was Spencer's best scoring threat while the other players contributed about the same amount of points, SPENCER VS. CHEROKEE Again being set back, the team showed much more promise. It was a heart-breaking game as the Tigers were beaten in a fast over- time period. SPENCER VS. MILFORD Easily rolling over Milford, Spencer won its first game of the season. Milford never led or even came close to leading the Tigers throughout the game. SPENCER VS. SHELDON The Tigers for the first time played the ball they were capable of playing by swamping the Sheldonites. Everyone played an outstand- ing game, but Bob Mann led the offense strength by dropping in ninteen points for the team. Bill Loder did the most cn defense. SPENCER VS. ESTHERVILLE After getting off to a poor start for the first half the team finally started to hit the pace and gradually surpassed the foes. Bob Mann was the star for the Tigers making eight free throws out of eight. One of the closest games of the season it was still anyones game until the very last moment of play. SPENCER VS. STORM LAKE The Tigers really got off to a good start in the scoring side and never gave up the lead. Storm Lake couldn't hit the hoop anytime in the game except the last few minutes of the game. Bill Loder played an alround good game hitting for seventeen points and he also played an outstanding defensive game. SPENCER VS. EMMETSBURG Continuing their winning streak the team gained revenge on the Midgets and downed them with little difficulty. Bob Mann showed up best on offense and also best on defense. SPENCER VS. SPIRIT LAKE Another overtime game which ended with the Tigers on the short end of the score. Spirit Lake led the Spencer boys throughout most of the game, but a fast ending proved almost too much for the Indians. SPENCER VS. CHEROKEE After leading at the half with a consider- able margin Spencer let down and were con- stantly scored upon. In the last half our shots missed most of the time and the defense was very loose. SPENCER VS. SHELDON More a football game than a basketball game the boys from Sheldon seemed they just didn't have the power to beat the Tigers. Bob Mann was the best scoring threat. SPENCER VS, ESTHERVILLE A nip and tuck gattle throughout with the Tigers being tucked away with a defeat. Lead- ing one point the third quarter, Spencer could not stop the shots of Woods of Estherville, and he and his team mates finally forged ahead to win. SPENCER VS. SPIRIT LAKE The rivalry between the Tigers and the Indians continued and so continued a sort of jinx which has been held over cur heads throughout the season. Mann was best on offense but everyone else was cold and this proved to be the margin of defeat, SPENCER VS. STORM LAKE Completing the season of regularly sched- uled games, the team was downed by Storm Lake's inspired ball team. The luck was against the team and most of their shots rolled out instead of in. The defense was also penetrated more than usual. SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT In a thrilling game the Tigers downed Estherville by one point in the last few seconds of play. Loren Moding sunk the winning marker. The second game saw the second five playing all of the game. Emmet Township couldn't do anything with Kirkwood who made 19 counters. Spirit Lake with two of their regulars out played inspired ball to eliminate Spencer from the running.
