The Spencer games include all that with the accent on the band. We're proud of the Way they set the mood for any occasion, the triumphs they bring through at concerts, the laurels they collect at contests. Good-looking, good-sounding: thats our Spencer band. An average of ninety-five students answered in the affirmative on each cold winter day that the homemaking girls served lunches. The menus included such mouth- watering edibles as scalloped potatoes with ham, baked noodles with salmon, chocolate pudding and Iello salad. One of the most revealing projects un- dertaken by the hornemaking deparment was a survey to uncover facts concerning your diet and mine. lt showed that a few more than half of the students in Spencer High eat three regular meals a day, twenty- five per cent more boys than girls eat break- fast daily, and twenty-two per cent more girls than boys prefer fruit for breakfast. Eleven per cent more boys than girls drink milk or cocoa and the boys lead by twenty-five in favor of breakfast food. Only forty per cent of the students drink a quart ot milk a day whrle ten per cent drink coffee These tabulated results are valuable not only to point out 1nd1v1dual diet delin quincies are helpful to the grrls rn planmng hot lunches 69 l-lomemakers Capers Some say that a woman s place rs in the home and we say that a g1rl s place is in the hornemakmg department where tender morsels and smart frocks are whipped up daily Forty eight girls busily planned for and worked out the theme of the Home- World Today Kmttlng First Aid and p annlng meals in respect to rat1on1ng are all a part of the present day home- maker s problem One crisp November evenmg found the girls before a blazing bonfire munching galloping gulnea p gs of their own makrng This was the easy to take 1n1t1at1o'n December brought the tra ditional Christmas party with its yule t1de festivities and exchange of gifts wh1le in Ianuary Mrs O M Chaney laid out ten New Year s Resolutions for girls and the secret of knowlng how to keep them For the last meeting of the year all seriousness and formality was thrown to the winds and the Home making Club went on a fresh a1r out1ng ih1s May picnic rs looked forward to each year wlth both ant1c1pat1o'n and regret for while it 1S more fun than a picnic 1t also means the end of another year of happy experiences rn Homemaking Club 9 making Club this year, A Girl and the 1 I I I I . . WAYNE IOHNSON Iunior who could be found most of the time in the enemy's backfield breaking up plays and setting them back for many yards loss. Back next year. DAVE NYREN Dave, a junior this year was a very capable substitute. He could be counted on in every game to fill the center post well. Back next season. WAYNE DUGGLEBY Another junior who on defense crashed through the enemy's line, on offense opened holes in the line and threw blocks in front of the backfield. FOOT B LL COACH RHOADS The task of forming teams out of green fresh- men is no minor task, but Coach Rhoads did an excellent job of it. His boys will be heard from later. GLENN HENDRICKSON Fullback with two years ahead. Often seen stopping runners who attempted to get far- ther than the secondary ee made good on most line smashes. MARLO TUTTLE Halfback who passed with unfailing accur- acy time after time. On line smashes Mar- lo took it on the chin and came upgfor more. Will be back next year. BOB THOMAS A substitute of the highest caliber, Bob proved to be a wiry tackle for the Tigers. Being a senior, he will not play again next year. - ff' A :QL CN Back Row: Bob Anderson, Frank Strong, Clarence Hamilton, Bob Woods, George Say.e, Ted Metier, Chub Wedge. After Coach Paulsen had taken his pick of the seaon's football squad, he and assisant Coach lones, who later became head coach, molded a team around six regulars from last year. They drilled the boys and taught them the fundamentals necessary in playing the game, football. S. H. S. started the season off with a bang by defea ing the Sheldon gridders by a score of 6 to O but were set back in the next game by losing to the strong Estherville Midgets. The next three games were hard for the Tigers. After losing a heart-breaking game to Sibley by one point they traveled further into the season and suffered large defeats from Storm Lake and Cathedral High of Sioux Falls, S. D. Followi'ng a heavy week of practice they upset the Emmetsburg Irish by a score of 7 to 6 which set their hopes high for the game with the Lakes Conference favorites, Cherokee. The game was postponed from Friday until the following Tuesday, because of a driving snow storm, but was played on the Cherokee field in a hard rain which hampered the playing of both teams and brougt down a crushing l9 to U defeat upon the brave Tigers. Then came the 'raditional Armistice Day game with the Spirit Lake Indians which proved fatal to the Tigers in the last four minutes of play, as the Indians scored and ruined the 7 to 6 lead which the Tigers had on 'hem and to win the game by a score of l3 to 7. Under the guidance cf Coach Austin A. Shearer, the younger champs turned in a fairly successful season. We find that they won three battles, lost two and tied one. Much power on offense but showed signs of weakness on defense which they improved very much during the season. The Cubs first encounter, with Estherville, cought them a little cff guard. Due to the late starting of the school year, they had little time to practice for the coming games. With a slightly unorganized batch of gridders, they entered into their schedule only to be knocked off the list by the srong Estherville eleven by a score of 18 to 6. The next week was a busy one for the Cubs as they set to work organizing a better team, which they did, for when the mighty Emmetsburg bunch tried to invade Spencer's gridiron they were sent back home carrying a 7 to 6 defeat. ln a relurn engagement with Estherville, the Cubs showed some improvement but not quite enough as they marked up their second defea of the season by a score if 14 to 7. After practicing very hard for another week they turned back an invasion if Glen Hendriakson. Gt-o1'gcSayre. Gene Dickinson. Spirit Lake game. attempted by the Storm Lake second team as they battled to a scoreless tie. When the game with Cherokee rolled around, the Cubs found themselves in fine shape and after a fight to the finish game they emerged with a 6 to O victory. ln their last game of the season the Cubs defeated the Storm Lake team by a score of l4 to 7 to show who was superior between the two. Checking up their past season, we discovered that they were only oul-done by one team, that of Estherville, wich defeated the Spencer lads twice to show their superiority. Mr. Rhodes, a new freshman coach, had he tremendous task, of organizing a freshman team this season. He found the squad very small but did a good job in putting a team to- gether. After being taught all the fundamentals of the game, they entered their six game schedule and made a trip to Milford only to have the game forfeiied to them due to a mix-up in schedules. The young bengals then witnessed their first real defeat, which was a heart- breaking blow dealt by the Storm Lake Fresh ies as they handed them a 7 to 6 defeat. In a return bout with the Storm Lake lads they suffered their second defeat by a score of 7 to 0. The Spencer Freshmen, in their fourth baitle, tangled with the strong Eslherville eleven which only proved to lower them two more games in the schedule, with two more defeats.
