Spencer's golf team came out on top this year with seven excellent players. Three of them, Bill Loder, Nook Redmond and Ace Cory are veter- ans of last year's team. Bob Mann, a freshman, Archie Erickson, Bob Thomas, and Kenny Preston completed the seven. The season was very successful, with Spencer' team defeating their op- ponents many times. Highlight of the year was the Lakes Conference Meet at Brooks Beach. Medals were given for top honors. With a loss of only two team members at graduation, the outlook for next year is very bright. Love Set A new sport in Spencer High's extra- curricular program this year, tennis is ranking high among spring athletics. A process of elimination was used to determine the team's members and those surviving the tests were Rognald Iensen, Ioe Kail, singles team, and Bob Cummings and Bob Mackey, doubles team. I ' Q were played off in Wednesday and Sat- T urclay tournaments. Many meets were set for the team and I Flying Cinders Track enthusiasts were chosen mainly from the three lower grades of high School. Although outclassed, the Tigers showed fine prom- ise for the future by keeping close to the Champs' heels throughout the game, making the score much closer than predicted. Adair, Cory and Prather saw a medium of first team action last year, but their positions were not definite due to the potential material in the sophomore and junior classes. Striving to extend his previous record, Coach Poul- son tried several quintets in order to strike a Winning combination. ln looking forward to 1942, Poulson exposed his underclassmen to that valuable factor, experience. Throughout the season this policy prevailed, promising fruitful possibilities for next winter. The first evidence of a winning team was ,shown against Storm Lake when both teams fought to break a tie in the last seconds of the game. A split second left and a Storm Lake field goal ripped the net to win the game. After Suffering four defeats in a row, Spencer emerg- ed with a Win on the local floor from Milford. The game was slow in parts, but an excellent showing was made in all phases of passing and shooting, 1940-41 Spencer 24 Storm Lake 35 Spencer 23 Estherville 35 Spencer 36 Arnolds Park 24 Spencer 26 Sa: City 38 Spencer 14 Spirit Lake 23 Spencer 28 Sibley 25 Spencer 25 Milford 30 Spencer 19 Emmetsburg 28 SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT Spencer 34 - Arnolds Park 11 Spencer 18 - Spirit Lake 38 Basketball - First Team Stars of 1941 Team The next game put us back in the losing column, but the spectators were satisfied by the thrilling scoring at- tacks staged by both teams. ln order to avenge our heartbreaking loss to the Tornadoes at the first of the season, the Tigers took to the floor determined and confident. The big floor was a handicap to the Tigers who fought strongly throughout the entire game. Another loss, and then an easy win over Arnolds Park in which some different quintet combinations were used to an advantage. A journey to Sac City proved a defeat along with a local Spirit Lake loss. A Dad's night celebration on February 21, proved an inspiration to the Tigers as they gained their first con- ference victory over Sibley. The determination of a Milford quintet proved disas- trous to the tigers despite colossal atiempts to rally. The last scheduled game of the year proved a loss when the Tigers iourneyed to Emmetsburg. Due to an attack of flu, Coach Poulson was confined to his bed, so Assistant Coach Shearer escorted the squad to Sprit Lake for an easy Win over Amolds Park. The following night the team returned to be drubbed by the '41 Conference Champs in a gruelling battle which was Spirit Lake's from the first quarter on.
