This enjoyable young lady was Miss Virginia Morgan to whom the 1931 Rupicola is dedicated, with all due love and regard, by the Senior Class of 1931. Miss Morgan came to us from West Virginia University where she was highly recommended, both as a student and teacher. From her first entrance into the school she was loved and respected by all who knew her and the better acquainted one became with her the more sterling qualities one found to be admired. Miss Morgan is very serious abouther work and accom- plishes it in a very serious manner. She is always laughing and gay along with her requirements of a high standard of work and is so winning in her ways and has such a sunny personality that all who come in contact with her cannot help feeling that they are lifted a little higher by this contact. The influence of Miss Morgan in the school life is great because everyone admires her high ideals and st1'ong char- acter. Her influence with the present Senior class is un- bounded because she did much to mold their Senior life by bring them safely through their Junior year, at which time she was their class oflicer. Through the dedication of this Rupicola the school attempts to express the love and gratitude which it feels for the faithful work and unbounded loyalty of Miss Morgan and the class of 1931 wishes to extend to her its best wishes for a happy future and the realization of all her brightest dreams. A successful or prosperous organization always denotes a competent directorship, a failing or unsuccessful one, an incompetent directorship. Since Spencer High School has prospered greatly in the past year, it is easy to see that she has a competent directorship somewhere behind the scenes. This body takes the form of our most worthy Board of Education, to which much of our success and progress for the past year is due. John Newlon, president of the Board, is the foremost photo- grapher of our illustrious city. Mr. Newlon is a man of much ability and has always shown a kind disposition to lend a helping hand whenever needed. To the invaluable help and assistance of this man the Class of 1931 owes much of its success in the past year. Guy Flesher, commissioner, while one of the newer members of the Board, has shown himself none-the-less willing and ready to cooperate with the school in everything which might contribute to its success. Mr. Flesher is a highly respected citizen and is rapidly becoming a popular member of our Board. We hope that Mr. Flesher's great ability and love may be extended to many future classes of Spencer High. Gay Stalnaker, commissioner, is a worthy member of our Board who has had a great deal of experience in this line elsewhere. For several years he was a member of the Board of Education of Cal- houn County and, at the time of the erection of the Calhoun High School, was president of the Board. Mr. Stalnaker is also an experienced teacher and has been particularly helpful to Spencer, High School because of his experience and qualifications. Paris Bell, secretary, is an old and experienced assistant of the 'Board as he has served in this capacity for ten years. Mr. Bell is very popular with the student body and has given it the best of service in advice. We greatly value Mr. Bell's help and assistance and hope that he may long be in position to render such help and assistance to our school. Page fourteen TFZQXQUJJ LJ V S !!! UQ! ! . ,mx N!! As all things have a humble beginning, so this class entered upon the Freshman road. But this class, made up of 127 freshmen, found the way rocky and hilly. A meeting was held at which James Board was chosen to lead them. We soon passed over one great bridge, First Semester Examinations, and at the end of the road was a bridge of finals, over which we safely passed to Sophomore Land. LATER CHILDHOOD-Vol. II As a Sophomore class, we spent our later childhood in gay Sophomore Land. To direct us in our work and play along the strange road, we chose Jean E. Miller to lead us past deeper knowledge wells, brighter lower- classmen valleys, and over two more great bridges. ADOLESCENCE-Vol. III It was in Jolly Junior Land that our class spent its adolescence, filled with youthful activities and pleasures. James Board was chosen the guide through this beautiful country, and we raced over new found hills of upper-classdom. To celebrate the crossing of the big bridge into the Senior Land, a banquet in gay orchid and yellow was given by us to the Senior Class. ADULT-HOOD-Vol. IV At last we have grown up and have reached the bright plains of Senior Land. Foster Hedges was chosen the guide of the sixty-five seniors. As a permanent reminder of our past life, we chose a Senior ring. And, finally, we came to the great Arch of Commencement, under which we passed to the years of the future. Foster Hedges, a retired lawyer of renown, out for his daily walk, accompanied by his red-haired twin daughters. He still has the springy step and erect carriage of his youth. Miss Pauline Moore, A. C. A., A. B. C., X. Y. Z., as the first woman President of Bowling Green, and using text-books, written especially for Bowling Green, she being the author. Mrs. Gwendolyn Hardman Lamp, prominent in Baltimore society circles, planning the debut of her eldest daughter, which has caused much comment due to Mrs. Lamp's recent widowhood. James Board, still an eligible bachelor, traveling with Billy Sunday, Junior, as the greatest evangelistic singer in America. Helen Burdette as a director of a class in gym for ladies between the ages of fifty and sixty, which course includes tap dancing. The following seniors of '31 are availing themselves of this opportunity: Misses Ruby Walker, Alta Stahlman, Margaret Jane Rhodes, Stacel Young, Beulah Smith and Mary Frances Ryan. Dr. Paul Hall, famous for his discoveries in the world of medicine, one in particular, his Sur-Cur for asthma. Mrs. Glenna Nellis Rhodes, President of the W. C. T. U., and who after one more year of active service will be retired on a pension. Mrs. Lucille Carpenter Davis, who has accepted the position of chaper- one on the Reedy Bus for the benefit of humanity. Grandpa Bill Bartlett, with a grandson on each knee, and telling them of his days in S. H. S., and especially those spent in Public Speaking Class. Mrs. Martha Hardman Chapman attending the Commencement exer- cises at Staunton Military Academy, where her son is being graduated. John Hersman in Phoenix, Arizona, on account of ill hea.lth due to over-study. Don Smith pushing a perambulator, perambulating Don Junior. Lester Cottrell wearing a new blue necktie and still calling on Mary Ellen Crislip. Juanita Shears traveling with Barnum and Bailey as the fat lady. The United States without the Eighteenth Amendment and Bar Tough Smith as chief bouncer in a large speakeasy. And also imagine, in 1960, the two pessimistic composers of this document, in their graves, with plain, unattractive markers, bearing the single inscription, Bored to Death. The Sophomore Class, with 126 members, is the largest sophomore class that Spencer High School has ever had. Miss Louise Roberts was appointed as class advisor. Under her guidance the class has progressed and they hope that when they are seniors their class will be the finest senior class that Spencer High has ever had. Three members of this class were regulars on the football team, one being an honor student. They also have two members that are regulars on the basketball team. Early in the school year the members of this class presented an interesting assembly program. The class enjoyed a peppy party held in the High School Gym- nasium on the night of November 7, 1930. A large number of the members of this class was present, also several guests. This year the Sophomore Class presented a play entitled Man or Mouse . It was given at the Robey Theater. Miss Roberts coached the play. The class is thankful to her for what she has already done in ad- vancing the class. She has only been with Spencer High this year but they find her a good sport and ready to help in the advancement of the Sophomore Class and Spencer High. Q N. JM . -e'5 5',Nf,'i g'e' Man or Mouse gets its name from two of the charactersg one of whom is a diplomatic and peaceful young man, the other a quarrelsome one who believes in fighting it out. The chief element in the story is that of jealousy. Both of them like the same girl, though one of them doesn't realize it. How all these troubles were settled was shown us by Sopho- mores who took part in the play. All of them did excellent work in their respective parts which gave an enjoyable evening at the Robey to those who saw it and those who presented it. The Council met and were organized early in the year and thus was able to get a great deal of work done. Miss Faustine Davis was elected president and under her expert guidance and with the assistance of Mr. Shumaker the Council immediately began work to make this school year the most successful year the school had ever known. This it has succeeded in doing. The Council, met regularly and discussed such problems as were detrimental to the progress of the school. Many of these problems were solved by the Council which worked untiringly in its efforts to make the school life run more smoothly. Some of its lasting contributions to the school are a school emblem and a team name in addition to many more things for which the school will be eternally grateful. The government organ- ization of this school has been made a great success by the Student Council of 1931. Page sclenty nme ijf'wW' w R 0 P I com ' al HI llmmu mu.n7usan.1 M.: lmm MQW Wm 'V' . The club meets on every Monday and Thursday, with a large attend- ance at each meeting. The bpsncer itaigh Srbuul Banu The present High School Band was first organized in 1927- 28 under the supervision of C. I. Elder, who carried on the wonderful work of music until the summer of 1930, when he accepted a position as principal of West Union High School and moved there. In August 1930 Mr. Karl Brown accepted the position offered to him by the Spencer Board of Education and has been doing a wonderful work in making the citizens of Spencer feel a taste for and appreciate good classical music. He is doing everything possible to make our Spencer High School Band the best in the world. Will he succeed? Wait and see. A few of the members of the band participated in the state orchestra which was held at Charleston, West Virginia. According to the state's greatest musical instructors, we have the best trombone player in the state, and all others from the S. H. S. Band ranked among the best from a musical stand- point. Yet they will not be satisfied until they are at the top of the ladder. They are hoping to win a medal for dear old S. H. S. in the State Band Contest held at Charleston this spring. The band has another occasion to make a name for itself and S. H. S. That is the Apple Blossom Festival at which they are expecting to receive a reward. This event occurs annually at Winchester, Virginia. Page ninety one . MQ , x 'bn I ,, i f-.,' ., Vg 'Ei' ,NAI 'gif-SW-1 if.. In addition to a recitation of past events the issues have given good synopses of coming events. It has also been the policy of the staff to run one or more pictures in each issue. The student body subscribed 100W for the Cliff Dweller with a 1'eduction in price to forty cents. Yes, we are widely known and will be far better known at the end of the school term. Many of the members are taking examinations for club pins. These pins will show to you just how hard we have been working. The club has enrolled with the State Department, and is carrying out the work outlined for it to do. Our club instructor, Miss Harrison, has been wo1'king in every Way that is possible for the advancement of the club, and the members appre- ciate it very much. The club adopted the name of Scotch Tramps after the Scotch who are great hikers. The Hiking Club started to work at once. They planned many hikes but only a few were successful because of the bad weather which hindered the taking of hikes. But the hikes which were successful were very much enjoyed by the members of the club. At the regular club meetings the Hiking Club discussed hiking equip- ment and dress, and the benefit derived from hiking. In the regular meetings the club had very interesting programs, some pertaining to hiking. V . p .L . 55 5 g ig- .4 jfnuthall With the graduation of seven letter men of 1929, the outlook for a successful team in 1930 did not seem encouraging and too one must not forget S. H. S. had one of the hardest schedules of any team in the state. At the first call for candidates, about 25 men reported who were a very green bunch taken as a whole. The first game of the season was with East Bank, to whom Spencer bowed--19-0. Too bad-how sad! The next game was with Poca. These teams were evenly matched and at the final whistle the score was 0-0. Then came the game with Grantsville which had been lookedforward to for many weeks and perhaps was the most interesting of the games played. The result was a 6-6 tie. Following the tie games with Grantsville and Poca, Spencer journeyed to Charleston where the boys were defeated by one of the best teams in the state, to the tune of 43-0. The next Friday, Spencer played Logan with old man Tough Luck, still following-19-0. The last home game of the season was played with Clay and with good teamwork was won 25-6. On October 31, Spencer played the Big Blacks of Pt. Pleasant. This game was one of the most exciting of the year. It ended a 7-7 tie. The next game was at Clendenin, which we lost 8-6, it being a hard fought game. Spencer next journeyed to Mt. Hope to play Luther Poling's Yellow Jackets. Spencer lost this game to Poling's hard fighting team 38-19. One of the most bitter defeats of the season was suffered at the hands of Parkersburg. Spencer fought gamely in this battle, but the Big Reds were just too much and Spencer finished on the short end of a 45-0 score. This was the final game of the season. As far as the past season is concerned, from a standpoint of victories the year was, to say the most, not very successful, but as for the other benefits received by the boys, the season was undoubtedly good. The team showed at all times and in all ways the spirit that has always been exemplihed by S. H. S., and which, when carried out next year, should give Spencer a very good team. With the passing of this season S. H. S. says goodbye and good luck to four lette1'men: Milo Smith, end, Basil Lawrentz, halfbackg Paul Hall, guard, and Foster Hedges, gua1'd. Coach Bullington teaches good sportsmanship above everything else. He is well liked by all students of S. H. S. Page one lzmzdred fin BB BB R U P I COLA A ! fx 3 S Q 5 g. il Y l fa Vik if fs. EQ if . This year the boys won 10 out of 16 games which is a great improvement over last year's record and one can easily see that this season was a successful one taking into consideration the very hard schedule. The team showed at all times good sportsmanship and a fighting spirit which made both the student body and the fans back the team 100 per cent. Spencer High School does not always have a winning team but her sportsmanship is always of the best and we hope it will continue through- out the coming years. Most likely Spencer will have as good a team next year, if not better, due to the fact that only one of the eight men taken to the sectional tour- nament graduates and there are several boys capable of filling the vacancy left by Curly Lawrence, regular forward who fought hard in all the games. Next year's squad will have the following material: Rufus Webb and Harold Cottle, an excellent pair of guards, and Hillis Cottle, forward, who was a high point man this year. Other good material will be: Brice Ham- mack, Blake Hammack, Carl Cooper, Bob Maher and others. Page one hzmdrcd .szven .,'l'ZL'f,,f'f2CJ, Q We Qrrrrrg EJ? At the beginning of the year, the girls elected Edna Tanner as their captain. She proved herself to be a very inspiring leader. Out of the eighteen games played the Spencer Cliff Dwellers won nine. We believe the girls have become better sports by having lost part of their games. Pritchard, Burdette, Wines, Davis and Fetty will be lost through graduation this spring but we feel sure that enough material is left for another g1'and and glorious season next year. Miss Dorothy Davis has been an inspiration to the girls. She has undoubtedly proven herself a competent coach. The girls learned to love her and she in turn loved them. Freshmen look like a handsome bunch, even though we only saw their hands. They number only 132. The faculty looks fine, too, even Mr. Karickhoff's moustache. Sept. 9-Today's as confused as yesterday. Poor Freshies certainly are having a time. Sept. 10-We got settled today and Miss Lawson told us about her trip to Europe. I believe most of' us were with her smelling fish in Holland and swimming in Venice. Sept. 12-We have a very good faculty this year and I believe a very musical one. We were entertained this afternoon by four members of the faculty who sang a few old selections. Sept. 18-We had an enthusiastic pep meeting today celebrating the oncoming football game tomorrow between Spencer and East Bank. Let's go, Cliff Dwellers! Sept. 19-We lost the game 19-0 but just the same our boys played a good, clean game. They exhibited good sportsmanship. Sept. 22-The classes met for the first time and were organized. Now begins ye olde competition. Sept. 24-Today was our first chapel program when we had with us Rev. L. H. Roseman of the Baptist Church who gave a very interesting talk. Sept. 26-Another game today, Spencer High vs. Poca. The score was 0-0. Well, anyway, they didn't beat us. Sept. 29-Certainly is coldg seems almost like winter today. Nearly Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct Oct everyone wore her hose and coat. 1-Seniors gave their first chapel program. It had been rumored that the Seniors didn't have much pep, but from their actions on the stage today, I believe they have quite enough. 2-Had a 'Thuse Meeting tonight for the big game tomorrow. It was sponsored by the Freshmen Class and say, have they got pep? y Como ! 3-Seems as if all Grantsville came over today to see Spencer get beat. But if they did, they were disappointed for our boys played hard and the score was 6-6. 6-Student Council had their first meeting and elected ofiicers. Now, watch for results. 7-Students are being well entertained and will be for the next three days. A cooking school is being held in the auditorium. We enjoy their radio, but we don't enjoy the odors. We'd so much rather do the tasting than the smelling. 8-Been lea1'ning some new yells to give when we go to Charleston Friday. We certainly were proud of our band for they showed up in grand color. 13-From outside reports the leaves have been turning this week-end. The reason for this, I guess, is the beginning of the six weeks exams. 16-Student Council certainly is a great help. Before long we're going to have chairs to sit on and parking places for our gum. 21-Everyone is looking forward to receiving his first six weeks grades. We wonder which class is the most intelligent. 22-Sophomores gave chapel program today. It certainly is nice to see ourselves as others see us. 23-Things must be getting pretty bad, especially in Mr. Snead's room. Pearl Cariens has to stand in the co1'ner. I bet it felt like ye good olde days. 24- Happy Criner was elected Master of Ceremonies for the lunch hour. I heard this was because he is such a good hand at slinging the dish-rag. 25-Seniors held a party in the gym last night and it was a howling success. 29-Freshies gave their first chapel program today. It appeared that they were slightly bashful for they gave a pantomime. 30-Juniors gave a Hallowe'en party. It certainly was a spooky affair. They gave a most favorable report of the hospitality of the Charleston people. Nov. 12-We are here but not for long, teachers are leaving this evening to attend S. E. A. The students certainly do hate to see them go but they'll probably get over it-suppose so? Nov. 17-Teachers back ! Nov. 18-The birdman was here today and had a movie in the audi- torium. I think the majority of the student body attended. Nov. 19- Kat and Dog Clubs, in other words the girls' and boys' Social Etiquette Clubs, gave a chapel program today. The young man was rather at a loss to understand why his services were needed inasmuch as the older firm 1'etained by this gentleman were much more able and experienced. The old gentleman replied in a whisper, that is the trouble, they are just too d- smart. The older firm of lawyers evidently lost a very fine contract, they knew too much. .17 .JL J. ,,.T4,qP4.T,, Thanks folks for the nice share of your business you have given us the past twelve months, may we always merit a continuance of your trade and never get too f'Smart .
