Play Or Pay There was plenty of excitement for those who partici- pated in the Homecoming events; and for those who didn’t, it cost their class points. This year the Junior High, along with the faculty, took part in Homecoming. Points were awarded to the classes based on a percent- age of students participating. The faculty led the week's competition until the pep rally on Friday afternoon. The winner of the week’s events was announced at the game on Friday — Sen- iors accumulated the most points. The week began with the obstacle course and clash day. The car cram and color day followed on Tuesday. Wednesday was inner tube race, pop and donut sale, and twin day. The car push, candy sale, and inside-out- backwards were on Thursday. The band and cheer- leaders performed at the bonfire and the snake dance on Thursday night. Traditional red and white, as well as hats and sunglasses, were worn on Friday. Sixth and seventh hours were devoted to the pep rally which consisted of class skits, a popcorn sale, secret competi- tion, the faculty song, and the initiation of the new administration and faculty members. King Rod Kerksieck and Queen Bev Kobs reigned over the sock hop that followed the game. 1. Siamese twins, Kim Woodkey and Deb Lekie, are inseparable. 2. Who's the sap running in the Freshmen skit? 9. Footloose! 30 32 Winter Games Are No “Freezeout” No one had to worry about freezing outside during Winter Olympics. All events were held indoors. Brave students wishing for spring wore shorts on Monday, while those that were not so brave donned sweats. Punk pupils swarmed the school on Tuesday — Deb Lekie was the punkiest of all. Wednesday the faculty defeated the students in basketball as the crowd watched on wearing their sunglasses and hats. A Gong show was held for Nerds on Thursday. On Friday every- one wore their favorite costume hoping they wouldn’t get a pie in the face. The climax of the week was a hot broom hockey tournament with the Seniors defeating the Juniors. 1. Melissa Marten modeled what every student should wear to their first-hour class. 2. We all know now what is between Corey Seefeldt's ears. 3. Nerd. Mr. Christensen, was MC of the 1 Gong Show. Spring Reliever “Pitches” A Victory For The Juniors May 8 was a perfect spring day — a perfect day for the Spring Fever Reliever. Instead of a variety of out- door games normally played at Spring Olympics, a soft- ball tournament was held instead. Game sites were the softball and baseball fields during fifth and sixth hours. In the first round the juniors played the freshman, while the seniors played the sophomores. The juniors easily defeated the freshman to go on to play for the championship. The seniors battled hard, but were de- feated by the sophomores. In the second round the seniors defeated the fresh- man to take third place. The juniors were victorious over the sophomores winning the tournament. 1. Sieve Butts seems to be saying, Is anyone going to throw me the ball. 2. Jeff Lokre pitches his team to victory over the seniors. 3. Are you ready for it? 4. Come on Stacey, try and catch me! 2 All “Hearts” When A Dream Goes On Forever King Dennis Fleischman and Queen Jackie Seitz reigned over the Class of ’86 Junior Prom on April 19. A bridge leading to a dream, heart-shaped balloons in the sky and pink, white, and silver streamers, all highlighted the evening. The Court danced to “Can’t Fight This Feeling”. Music was provided by WIFC disc jockeys. 1. Neil, your on my foot. 2. Wanna go somewhere more private? 3. PROM COURT — ROW 1: Miniature King Nick Seitz. Queen Jackie Seitz. King Dennis Felischman. Criss-Cross” The Country-side 39 Volleyball Opens To “Perfection” High hopes for a perfect volleyball season were with the girls when the season opened. The team started off with match sweeps over two Marshfield squads. But confer- ence title hopes soon faded when the Rockets came up against conference champs Abby. The girls finished the season with an impressive 6-3 conference record. In invita- tional play the Rockets placed first in their home invita- tional and brought home a second place from Richland Center. Individual statistics were shared by several teammates. Stacey Stephens recorded the most serves, blocks, and passes. Kim Woodkey aced 22 serves, while Bev Kobs placed 404 sets. Deb Lekie was known for her dinks, 39. Their efforts paid off with the following individual awards: Bev Kobs — Hustle: Stacey Stephens — Best Overall; Kim Woodkey — MVP; and Deb Lekie — MIP. 1. For much of the season it took a team effort to “stay alive.” The Rockets finished the season with a conference record of 0-9. At the Fall Sports Banquet football awards were handed out. Receiving awards were: Mitch Melander — Top Block; Neil Sternweis — Defensive Award; Kevin Gamble — Offensive Award; Todd Hildebrandt — Rocket Award; Craig Elsinger — MVP; and Rod Kerksieck — Captain. They worked hard and improved as the season progressed. They finished the season with a 2-5 dual meet record and a 3-8 over-all record. During the season the wrestlers’ were successful in tour- nament action, with two wrestlers, Eric Zenner, 119, and Rod Kerksieck, 145 advancing to Sectional action. The boys finished the season with a 5-14 conference record defeating the likes of Abby, Stratford, Athens, and Granton twice. Receiving awards for their outstanding achievements were Kevin Gamble, MVP-Offense, and Mike Ruhbusch, MVP-Defense. Their determina- tion and enthusiasm for the game helped to put “Life'' into fellow team members. Even with injuries and disap- pointed defeats, they showed up for practice and give it their best shot. The Varsity finished the season with a 4-15 record, but the girls’ spirits were high nonetheless. The Most Valuable Player award went to Stacey Stephens, who also was selected second team All-Conference. Stacey set the conference record for free throws, too. Tina Nikolai received the Dynamo award; the high rebounder was Deb Lekie. 1. STATS and MANAGERS — ROW 1: Sara Gennett. ROW 2: Kim Bue, Jackie Seitz. 2. JV — ROW 1: Patti Krug. Brenda Langreck. Pitching wasn’t the dominant force throughout the season but good offense held the games pretty even. Games like Abbotsford-21, Spencer-20, really frustrated the players and coach. With Juniors guys returning next year like Eric Zenner, Todd Foth, and David Kobs, they’re looking for a good year. 1. BASEBALL — ROW 1: Scott Wucherpfenning. David Kobs. Ches- ter Knott. One wrong move by a member of the squad could lead to toppling the entire pyramid over just like dominos. To prepare for the season, the cheerleaders held a car wash and bake sale during the summer to raise money for additional uniforms. Two more sports were also added to the cheerleaders’ season. Squads led fans in cheering at both volleyball and girls’ basketball games for the first time. 1. Everything takes teamwork. 2. Christi moves to the Homecoming Pom Pon routine. 3. At the beginning of the year the student govern- ment had to put Homecoming together. Other special events included Winter Fest and a Spring Softball Tourna- ment. But their tasks weren't all fun and games, they did have some serious tasks. These included working at Senior Citizens Day and Retired Staff Appreciation Day. Another event that benifited the whole community was Project Merry Christmas. This entaled the collecting, boxing and delivering of food to the elderly and needy. Student government was allowed to have input into the student handbooks which were distributed to all high school and junior high students. Student government also went to the school board with the plea to get a pop machine in addition to the milk machine. The request was granted, and a Coke (can) machine was installed. The milk machine was then moved into the Junior High area. The proceeds from the pop machine have also been put to good use. Some of the moneys were donated to the year- book to help eleviate its debts and to the Warner family to help defer cost after their fire. 1. OFFICERS — ROW 1: Vice President Kim Woodkey. Forensics is the art of public speaking with interpretation through voice and body language. Ten students chose to partici- pate in the following categories: Interpretive Reading of Prose and Poetry, Solo Acting, Public Address, and Four-Minute Speech. After many hours of practicing and coaching by Mrs. Knauf, the students were ready for competition at Marathon. Those receiving more than 18 of 25 points to continue on to District competition were Melanie and Melinda Carpenter, Audra Rux, Mitch Melander, Geana Mellenthin, Kristine Johnson, Cindy Wiersig, and Amy Neidlein. On April 20, State competition was held on the UW-Madison campus. Five students represented Spencer. First of all you have to find and gather all the pieces and then put them carefully together to form a perfect picture of what happened during the school year. The idea of putting a puzzle together was the basis for this year's theme, It's Just a Game. The theme was depicted through the cover design, division pages, and page titles. To meet the requests of the students, two pages of color life were added along with pages set aside for Junior High. Computer banners were sold to keep stu- dent cost of yearbooks down. Gn t 1. Our Advisor, Mrs. Messerschmidt is not pictured due to the fact that she is behind the camera. “Press Your Luck” Getting the paper out on time was not a matter of luck, but rather a matter of hard work. First of all, articles had to be submitted for editing. Typing II students then typed the articles in particular column width. Typed articles were pieced together to form layouts for the individual pages. Photographers were busy during this time snapping pictures to compli- ment the stories. Each issue was carefully proofread before being sent to the printer. After papers re- turned from the printer, they were distributed to the students free of charge. Area schools also received copies to find out what happened at SHS. 1. Mirror images reflect the works of photographers Becky Day and Paula Kolb. 2. SHS EDITORS — ROW 1: Kristin Huotari. Book Fair Goes “Upwords” Four hundred forty-four balloons were launched to kick off the elementary Book Fair in October. Library aides were responsible for filling these balloons with helium and preparing them for their unknown destinations. Throughout the year the Library Club held popcorn sales to raise money for their annual Christmas and spring parties; pizza was on the menu this year. In order to assist students and librarians in locating materials, Miss Briles, librarian, moved her desk into the library from her previous office. Library rules seemed to enforce themselves just by the presence of her desk. i 1. OFFICERS — ROW 1: President Sharon Wells, Treasurer Michelle Melander. In fall, band members were often seen and heard sixth hour practicing their marching on streets nearby school. Halftime festivities were hardly a thing of the past before practice was switched to Christmas music for their win- ter concert. January was set aside for entertainment as plans were made for the annual Cabaret. By the time spring rolled around, a more serious note was taken. This could have been because of the increase in membership. Roger Pescinski and Mitch Melander have applied for State Farmer degrees. Proficiency positions were applied for by Mark Melander, Mitch Melander, and Bryan Helsten. The Parliamentary Procedure Team received a gold ranking at the District competition. Other competitions for the FFA included the Ag Tech- nology contest at UW-River Falls. The Safety Program, headed by Chellen Dekarske, proved to be very active. FHA Extends “Warm Feelings” Throughout School, Community, World Throughout the school year FHA members showed they cared. They extended warm feelings toward classmates and faculty by sponsoring the annual Season’s Celebra- tion. Twice monthly ice cream treats were sold to students and during second semester candy was sold to pacify student appetites. During National FHA Week Candy Grams were delivered, a Treasure Hunt was conducted, and faculty members were recognized. On November 6 mothers were guests at the Mother- Daughter Banquet held at the Plaza. Funds from Tupper- ware sold by members covered the cost of mothers’ tick- ets. FHA’s warm feelings were also shown by their serving refreshments at the plays and parent conferences. The warmest feeling of all, though, is the one extended to the child the club supports in Kenya. 1. Officers gel their choice first at ice cream sales. 2.
