With that in the past, they soon began planning this year's book. In September, seven staff members along with their advisor, attended a yearbook workshop at Eau Claire's Holiday Inn. At semester time, this year's books were sold. The cost was $15, which included your name printed on the front. On the last day, the final dead- line was met when the last set of copy was sent to the printer. 1. Nice pony. 10 As Miss Donna Olson joined the teaching staff at SHS, she took on the job of advising the FFA. A com- bined effort between adviser and students helped to make a success- ful year. Some activities that kept mem- bers busy throughout the year were basketball, fund raisers, and FFA week. Also a few days were spent teaching the fourth graders. National FFA week, February 14- 26, involved both FFA members and non-members. Mitch Me- lander won the milk chugging con- test with a winning time of 19 sec- onds. Mrs. Rose and Mrs. Hager tied for first place on a quiz about food and farming given to teachers. Other activities included a farmer dress-up day, a bulletin board con- test, and a staff appreciation day. To keep the books out of the red, a number of fund raisers were initi- ated. Sausage, cheese, fruit, and the all-American favorite — peanuts — were sold. 11 This year with the lack of partici- pation in many things, the FHA banquet was cancelled. National FHA week was one of the events, though, that went on as planned, February 13-17. During the week candy grams were sold, and the annual all-member break- fast was held. On Monday, mem- bers received prizes if their name was drawn. Two contests for the entire school to participate in were con- ducted. Brenda Talcott was able to guess the number of popcorn ker- nels in a jar, and Pam Kolb found 1571 words in Future Homemakers of America. 12 1. Jazz Band performs at Cabaret. Once again members of the band were raising money for another summer trip. The trip is being planned for Mackinac Island and up into Canada. The students and the Band Boosters were busy sell- ing candy, tickets for the Seventh Annual Cabaret and tickets for the Second Annual Wally Ives Dance. They also found a new fund raiser, and that was wrapping Christmas presents at Shopko. 15 The Chorus grew in numbers this year as it doubled the members in the male section. This allowed the Male Chorus several spots in the Seventh Annual Cabaret held in January. The Chorus members also exper- ienced the fun of learning to sing in German and Latin and learning to play the piano. The Rocket Showgirls were re- placed by The New Image. Along with the new name, new uniforms were also acquired, although not in time for yearbook pictures. The Swing Choir and Chorus made appearances at several differ- ent places during the year. They sang at the Colby and Abbotsford nursing homes and the Northway Mall during the Christmas season. lb 1. This new sport was cross country. Twenty people, both boys and girls, com- peted in this running event. Being the first season, the team did quite well. The girls ran up a record of 4-3, while the boys' record was 1-7. Mr. Zenner, the coach, felt it was quite an accomplishment for the girls to compete in Sectionals as a first-year team. Receiving awards were: Melanie Carpenter and Eric Zenner, Most Mileage; Melinda Carpenter and Eric Zenner, Most Valuable; Doug Abbott and Karin Endries, Most Improved; and David Sautner and Nancy Sternweis, Leadership. 1. In tournament play, they advanced to Sectionals. Two team members were named to first team all-conference. They were Stacey Stephens and Kim Woodkey. Becky Strey received honorable mention. The squad was not able to fill two weight classes, 98 and 185, which resulted in forfeited matches. The fifteen boys who went out for the sport did give it their best shot though. Two wrestlers advanced to Sec- tional action. They were Rick Dietsche, 105, and Eric Zenner, 112. When the season ended Eric also recorded the most pins, and David Sautner accumulated the most take- downs. 67 The number of girls out for bas- ketball was once again down. But the girls ambitions were not, they worked hard throughout the season and they ended up with a not-so- bad record of 7-11. This year was the first time for the Channel 7 Girls All star team, unfortunately no one from Spencer made it. The Most Valuable Player Award went to Joan Buse. Tina Ni- kolai received the Most Improved, the Offensive Award went to Sta- cey Stephens, the Dynamo Award went to Bev Kobs, the Dynamo Award is given to the player who makes things happen on the court. Yea For Students Since Homecoming was scheduled early this year, September 23, Student Government had little time to organize the week's events. But they put their minds together and came up with a tug-of-war, an obstacle course, dozens of donuts, lots of suckers, and some faculty pyramids. Two days were set aside for special dress: Buccaneer Day and 50's Day. Thursday night the bon fire was lit, and students snake danced in the rain. On Friday, game day, students wore red and white and their favorite hats and sunglasses to show school spirit. King Greg Oestreich and Queen Rochelle Reckner reigned over the dance which followed the game. 1. HOMECOMING COURT: Ann Burke escorted by Greg Fleisch- man, Lisa Bauer escorted by Jeff Griepentrog, Queen Rochelle Reckner escorted by King Greg Oestreich, Sheri Elsinger escorted by Kevin Pankratz, Conni Strey escorted by Todd Christiansen. 86 The pressure was put on the stu- dents to decide if they wanted Win- ter Olympics to take place or not. Since Homecoming showed a lack of participation, students had to participate in Winter Olympics. Participate is what they did! There was a big turn out for snow sculpturing, a trivia contest was held, and students dressed Ha- waiian on Friday for the Gong Show. Those that could stomach the festivities ate donuts and sun- daes during the days set aside for Winter Olympics. It was a mid-winter break we needed. 1. Lying down on the job as usual. 2. Are Conni and Julie in love again? 3. It took two years, but Mitch finally won with his jokes. 4. Our ding-a-lings. 5. Typical student driver, in the snowbank again. 88 5 Spring Games Are Just For Fun This year Spring Olympics was held a little later than other years. On May 10 we had Hawaiian Dress-up Day. Then on May 11 students got the afternoon off for Spring Olympics. Events that were held were the Food Relay, the Class Jump Rope, The Egg Toss, the Obstacle Course, and the Balloon Toss. Two new events that were held were the Fris- bee Toss and the Bat Spin. The Bat Spin was enjoyed by all including the faculty and Mr. Colletti. There was no winner for the Spring Olympics, it was just for fun. 1. Michelle gets her face full of whipped cream 2. Round and round they go, where they stop nobody knows. 3. Easy does it. 4. Angie and Melissa try their skill in the Jump Rope contest. 5. Greg got the worse end of the deal. 89 It was a quiet evening in May for Just You and I that brought out prom lovers and stars. Those at- tending the '84 Junior Prom en- tered the gym through a large light- ed silver star and found themselves in a starry atmosphere of dark blue, light blue, and silver streamers. A stair case to the stars hovered over an angelic star pool. Prom goers watched from their candle-lit tables as Mike Ruhbusch and Kristine Johnson were crowned King and Queen of the prom. Music for the evening, was provided by WIFC disc jockeys. 90 1. Now what was that order? Dark blue, light blue, silver? 2.
