We seem to be above it all, but then something happens that brings us down to earth. Sunday, Octo- ber 21, 1979 was one of those days. Our friend, Keith, was killed in a car accident. Keith was a warm, sensitive person, though most people didn't know it because he was shy. Yet, he was open and honest with his feelings. His eyes always sparkled and left the impression of happiness. He probably was, for he lived life to its fullest. Good-by, Bright Eyes. 22 CLASS OFFICERS —ROW 1: Advisor Mr. Bukowski, Vice President DuWayne Griepentrog, Advisor Mr. Christensen. Cats fit on the windowsill. Children fit in the snow. Why do I feel I don't fit in anywhere I go? Every man has his daydreams. Every man has his goals. People like the way dreams have of sticking to the soul. Rain comes after thunder. Winter comes after Fall. Sometimes I think I'm not after anything at all. And maybe some misty day. You'll waken to find me gone. And far away you'll hear me singing to the dawn. And you'll wonder if I'm happy there A little more than I've been. And the answer will come back to you Like laughter on the wind. Rivers belong where they can ramble. Eagles belong where they can fly; I've got to be where my spirit can run free Got to find my corner of the sky. 24 As in other years, the senior class marched into the R. J. Tack Auditorium as a group and left as individ- uals; each going their own way. It was nothing new for the Administration, but it had a special signifi- cance for each of the 57 graduates. The date was May 16, and the memory of that night will remain with the class of '80 for years to come. At Homecoming time, the week's festivities be- came alive with a new mini-float contest and skits open to all organizations and classes. When Christmas came, they struggled to get food for the elderly. The students pulled through, along with local businesses, and provided beautiful boxes of food to many. The group convinced Mr. Colletti, their new advi- sor, to hold Winterfest for the second time, which proved to be to be successful too. But when spring came. Student Government was unable to schedule a Spring Olympics to the dismay of many. STUDENT GOVERNMENT—ROW 1: Renee Fait, Jon Steffenhagen. Jay, Jim, Scott Wrestle i Jim Wingert, Scott Carlson, and Jay Krasselt wrestle to state. Wrestling fans made another exciting trip to Madison. This year three wrestlers qualified for State action: Jay Krasselt at 119, Jim Wingert at 138, and Scott Carlson at 105 made his second appearance. Many individual records were set by these wrestlers. Jay set a new record for career wins at 76 and for the most ca- reer pins. Jay also was the first Rocket to win three confer- ence championships. Scott established a new school record for the most pins in one season, 13. He aslo set a record for the most wins in one season, 23. On February 9, the matmen hosted the Marawood Con- ference Tournament. Athens was awarded the team championship in a packed R. J. Tack Auditorium. Our Jay Krasselt and Scott Carlson walked away with individual conference titles. Kevin Ammons and Jeff Wingert took sec- onds. Other place winners for the Rockets were Mark Stelzl and Tom Strebe fifth and DuWayne Griepentrog sixth. When the season ended, the Rocket wrestlers recorded six wins and four losses in dual meet competition. They also added a second-place trophy from the Wausau East Invitational to those already in our trophy case. The team consisted of twenty-four members, and each worked hard throughout the season. During the season the girls cruised through school records which were broken once again by themselves. Those breaking school records were Marcia Christiansen, Ann Freeman, and Bonnie Bauer. Marcia Christiansen also competed in the State Tournament where she finished tenth in the shot put. She had a throw of 32 ft. and 10 inches. 1. Get a good grip, Tracey. They started out the year by taking first at the Marshfield Invitational, which was quite a big step over the year be- fore. This win was the first of a series of good performances. As the season progressed the team showed more improvement by taking fourth at the Conference Meet. Throughout the season new records were pouring in from all sides. Roger Anderson broke the discus record, Tim Lang broke both the one-mile run and the two-mile run, and Don Scharbarth set new records in the long jump and the one-hundred yard dash. All of these guys were part of the top six scorers. As tournament time rolled around Don Scharbarth was the one team-mate who ad- vanced all the way to state competition where he competed in the 100 yard dash. He finished fourth in the preliminary round. 1. Perfect take-off, Tom! 2. Tim took the tape. Nine Hit To Win The Baseball Team finished their 1979-80 conference play with a 3-6 record. Although the record doesn't seem to say much for the team, two of the three teams they beat were Pittsville and Stratford—the tough- est teams in the conference. The team also finished second in the Pittsville Tournament. The Rockets were led by the four seniors. Fresh- man Dan Foth also did an excellent job, pitching a no-hitter against Ab- botsford. 1. But there never seems to be enough time To do the things you want to do once you find them. I've looked around enough to know that You're the one I want to go through time with. If I had a box just for wishes And dreams that had never come true; The box would be empty except for the memory Of how they were answered by you. ■ c. :.-y-'J.-v - -?• . s+ s -. % % + - ?
