Published by the Rocket Staff of Spencer High School Spencer, Wisconsin 54479 Volume XXIV IN MEMORIAM BOB MURPHY April 7,1961 — May 3,1978 Struck down by cancer in the prime of his life, we all un- comfortably and with sorrow view his death ... Bob was a young man who loved life ... his life showed each of us how to live. He made the most of every day granted him. None of us shall ever be the same again, because each of us knew Bob Murphy. His spirit has merged into our own lives and so he lives on in us. Although he will not pass this way again, we are all better for having known him. The time has finally come for the Class of 79 to gradu- ate. The date chosen for commencement was May 18. Sixty-three students marched down the aisle of the R. J. Tack Auditorium to receive their diplomas. The girls chose to wear light blue robes and the guys dark blue. After each graduate received a white rose tipped blue, they left the auditorium to start a new life of their own. 27 Good-bye May 4 was the last time the entire Class of ’79 got together before their graduation. Tire big occasion was their Senior Banquet held at the Village Pla- za. The guest speaker for the evening was Dan Schwantes, a former teacher and class advisor. Providing entertain- ment were Charles Brauer and his dog, Ranger. Jon Burnett was the master of ceremonies and passed out various awards to the well-deserving Seniors. It was a very successful banquet, and a truly memorable way to say good-bye to classmates. 1. Entertainment by Charles Brauer. 2. School had hardly started before they went to work planning Homecoming activities. This year, as in the past, they gave awards for the best hall decorations and the best class skit. Winter found the group even busier. Operation Merry Christmas was conducted to gather food for the elderly. Students who brought food were entertained by Charles Brauer, a folk singer. To break the hum-drum of winter. Stu- dent Government sponsored its first Winterfest. This was a week of fun-filled activities enjoyed by the students. 1. “Long Live the Queen.” 2. The plot is predictable and the out- come assurred. The cast and crews happily rose to the oc- casion and gave us performances that were entertaining and true. Rather than imitating other productions, they strove to make theirs unique-they succeeded. Three “standing room only” audiences didn’t hurt the production either. The group is to be congratulated on their abliity to consistently draw large audiences. This, alone, at- tests to their ability. 1. They started the year off by selling Stanley Prod- ucts to raise money for their banquet and a trip to southern Wisconsin to tour the House on the Rock. Season’s Celebration was again held at Christ- mas and at St. Patrick’s Day cookies were sold to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy. With that record they ended up in 8th place in the con- ference. Continually trying to improve on their serves, spikes and coverage, the girls took their first win in their fourth match against Athens and won 2 out of their last three games. The girls then participated in Sub Regionals held at Spencer. The Rockets beat Granton allowing them to advance to Regional action. They tied for second place in the Marawood Conference with Marathon only to be lead by Edgar. Steve Pilz lead the team scoring with 385 points and Mark Shupe cleared the boards 120 times. They were assisted by the other three starters; Kevin Buse, Jerry Krause, and Vance Cook. The support given by our strong bench can not be over- looked either. The highlight of the season was the last home game when the Rockets defeated the Red Raiders in our jam-packed gym. Tournament hopes were soon ended, though, when the Rock- ets were defeated by Stratford in the first game of the Sub- Regionals. Although the team’s hard work and efforts were not always rewarded, a few individuals had the satisfaction in knowing they went down in the stats. Freshman Scott Carlson was the first wrestler in SHS history to qualify for the state tournament. He wrestled in the 98 pound weight class and lost his first match to Cleveland Allan of Milwaukee West. Scott now holds the best record for a Freshmen wrestler with 19 wins. Other individual records were set also. Jay Krasselt had the most wins in one season with 21 wins; 7 being pins. He won 17 matches in a row putting his career wins at 54. Pat Win- gert set the new school record for takedowns at 109. Team effort produced the first points ever scored at a sectional tourn- ament for SHS.
