Remember is a lovely word, And telescopes the years, When sliding on time’s avenue Memory appears To bring to life for inner eyes The pages of the past, Where tears and joys have merged to form Rainbows that will last. by Patricia Clafford Published by the Rocket Staff of Spencer High School Spencer, Wisconsin 54479 Volume XXIII Together “Like the twilight in the road up ahead, they don’t see just where we’re goin’...” Abruptly, we will be thrust from dependence and will emerge as adults with all the responsi- bilities, problems, and opportunities of the real world. We rarely feel affected by a day at school, though each of us will retain memories of our learning experiences. People, styles, issues, and happenings combine to create the values that com- pose an individual. Our friends, our values and our destina- tions are the result. Together we faced happiness and sadness and together we grew. The Bookies 45 Keep on No one could realize how much work goes into putting out a successful yearbook, unless you were one of the few people who put all their time and effort into this year’s book. Without any seniors and very few underclassmen, the few juniors, who made up most of the ’78 yearbook staff, had to be everywhere and capture the feelings of all four classes. The task was a very difficult one and at times very depressing. The staff tried to cover every event with pictures and a few comments that could either make you laugh or cry. Sometimes the camera didn’t work, or at times there just wasn’t anyone available to cover a certain event. Subtracting all the hassles, discouragements, and hurt feelings anyone who gave their time, should be glad they were a part of this year’s annual staff and should have a feel- ing of accomplishment. Not only have they put out a book, but they have also learned responsibility and the will to “Keep On Trying”. 1. Advisor Mr. Wille 2. Editor-in-chief Deb Griepentrog 3. The staffs have im- proved since last year with more people helping out. The newspaper covers all the school activities and other feature articles along with photographs. The staff puts in a lot of time and hard work and have learned the meaning of the word cooperation. 1. I Journalistic Endeavors Recognized The annual Quill Scroll Banquet was held on May 4, at the Amber Inn, in Loyal. After a warm welcome from Rhon- da Jicinsky the meal was served. The guest speaker for the evening was Bob Berglund, edi- tor of the TRG. There were six students initiated for their fine work done on the annual and newspaper. Initiates for the newspaper were Deb Jakel, Lori Lekie, Dawn Hopfensperger, Theresa Strey, Sandy Schultz, and for the annual Pam Nall. Next year’s officers were also announced. 1. Initiation through the candle of truth. 2. Bob Berglund tells of his experiences as a journalist. 3. “Wow, man!” so That’s Entertainment The Rocket Band—whether performing in concert or at festival, marching in a parade or at a football game, playing at a volleyball, wrestling, or basketball contest always pro- vides good music performed in an excellent manner. A first place marching trophy and a first place concert award adds to the superior performance of our band. A record 70% of the band competed in the state solo-ensemble festival this year. Receiving the John Phillips Sousa Award for his outstand- ing job in band over the past years, was Jeff Graves. 1. It all began with the annual initiation party, where our new members were welcomed into the Chapter. Throughout the year they held a pizza party, a breakfast. Season’s Celebrations, and other various fun or money raising activities. The school year was ended with a trip to the Betty Crocker Kitchens and Interna- tional House of Foods in Minneapolis. 1. Let us pray. 2. Doesn’t it make you hungry? 3. A few wise words from the State President. 59 You’re a Good Man Masque and Bauble marked another milestone in its grow- ing tradition of good theater when the stage lights went up on its first musical production, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” A “standing room only” audience responded enthu- siastically with a standing ovation to the production which is based on the “Peanuts” cartoon strip created by Charles M. Schulz. The talented cast, musicians, and technicians truly deserved the applause for their smoothly integrated, and highly entertaining performances. Recognition must also be made of the efforts of Mrs. Sheri Boock, vocal director, and Mr. James Weber, orchestra. Only with their co-operation could the production have been so successful. This “typical day in the life of Charlie Brown” made three memorable evenings at Spencer High School. 2 3 1. Lucy: And when 1 go out in my coach, all the people will wave! 2. The original Greek tragedy by Sophocles was up-dated by Jean Anouihl and then translated by Lewis Galantiere. The play insists that moral law exists and that we must have a passionate regard for the sanctity of human dignity. The players persuaded us with the truth of their performances. Through her efforts and hard work she has pre- sented many plays for the enjoyment of the community of Spencer and has made the students of Spencer High aware of the fun and hard work of theatre. 64 2 Student Government 1. The Student Government is made up of representatives from each class and from the organizations at SHS. The 17 members were very busy mak- ing decisions and planning various ac- tivities. They planned the Homecom- ing week activities, Homecoming Dance and Christmas Dance. Two of their biggest projects were “Operation Merry Christmas” and Con- tinuing the Spring Olympics to raise money for the outdoor student lounge. “Operation Merry Christmas” was a combined effort of the classes and the student government to make Christmas more enjoyable for less fortunate peo- ple. 65 The Worlds Greatest Team Forensics is the art of public speak- ing. The forensics program at SHS has been growing by leaps bounds as more and more students become in- volved. This year was the most success- ful ever in the history of our school. Everyone received an A rating at the Granton sub district contest and all but one an A rating at the district con- test at Stevens Point. This insured that Spencer took top place among all the schools at Stevens Point. Then on April 29, twelve of our “worlds great- est forensics team” came home with the gold. We celebrated with a pizza party on May 17. What a great great year! 1. About 45 Central Wisconsin schools make up the League. Four students from each school compete in each of the three categories. Geometry, Algebra, and Ad- vanced Mathematics. This team of twelve is then set up so that the best three scores in each category becomes the team score. Several awards are given for team and individual scores. Students from each size school, small, medium, and large, scoring the highest during the course of the year are given U. S. Savings Bonds. Every student that participates in at least 2 of the 3 meets is awarded certificates of participa- tion. The students from each school, with the highest score in each category are invited to attend a banquet sponsored jointly by Sentry Insurance of Stevens Point and Employers Insurance of Wausau. 1. This type of team improve- ment could be observed until midway through the season when the consistency of the offense and defense had reached a point where the team was playing very respectable football. Spencer proceeded to lose Homecoming to Abbotsford in overtime, only to come back and beat a good Rib Lake team 24 to 7 for parents’ night. Conference champions, Edgar, who had bombed teams all year, found the Rockets much im- proved also as they could only beat Spencer 24 to 7 in a game which was much closer than the score indicates. The best was yet to come, as the idea of working hard to improve was pay- ing off. The last game of the season saw the Rockets playing a very good game both offensively and defensively to defeat Athens 42 to 20. Although the Rockets record was not that outstanding, the future has to be viewed with optimism. Of the 25 boys who will letter, 15 will be back next year as ex- perienced players. For their fine play throughout the season, Steve Endreas, was named to the 1 st team all-conference team as a defensive halfback. Honorable mention honors also went to John Wing- ert, Jim Day, Ted Mutzner, and Wayne Vaughan. Other play- ers who will be lost through graduation are: Mike Bymers, Tim Jensen, Scott Zinsli, Jeff Jakel, Tom Huber, and Dennis Hinrichsen. 1. Halls were decorated and judged with first place going to the Juniors. Since Monday was hat day, students and teachers were seen wearing any- thing from baseball caps to Mickey Mouse ears. With John Burke as the auctioneer, slaves were sold Tuesday. During the day, students were allowed to eat junk food sold by the wrestlers. Wednesday, slaves were seen in action as their mas- ters had many odds and ends for them to do. It was interest- ing to see the students Thursday, as it was inside out day. In some cases, zippers tended to be a problem. Red and white day was Friday which gave the students a chance to wear their school colors. In what was the worst weather in years for a football game, Spencer was defeated by the Abbotsford Falcons by a score of 20 to 14 in overtime. After the game, entertainment was provided by the rock band “Condor.” Tammy Schafer and John Wingert reigned as King and Queen over the home- coming festivities. 1. A new couple is formed. 2. After five disappointing losses in a row, the Rockets bounced back by beating Athens in a non-conference triangular. Out of the last three confer- ence matches, Spencer was able to come up with only one victory which was over Marathon. Even though conference play for the team was over, the girls had three remaining non- conference matches in which they overpowered Greenwood and Neillsville. Ending their season with a 2-6 conference record and a 5-8 overall, the girls participated in sub-regional action at Stratford and were eliminated. Spencer will be losing five seniors next year: Carrie Strebe, Jackie Johnson, Karla Krause, Sue Seefeld, and Carol Cook. Carrie Strebe was named to the second all-conference team while Jackie Johnson received honorable mention. The J.V.’s finished with a conference record of 1-7 and 3-10 overall. Spencer Rocket Basketball for the ’77-78 season turned out to be highly successful. The Rockets record stood at 14-6 which is the best record recorded in the past 13 years. Their 13-5 conference record was good for a second place in the conference. A number of boys also won individual honors as well. John Burke was named to the first team Channel 7 All-Star squad as well as being chosen for All-Conference and TRG, All-Area Teams. Steve Pilz was named to the TRG All-Area Team and also honorable-mention All-Conference. Mark Shupe was named honorable-mention All-Confer- ence. Lack of depth was a handicap for the Rocket tracksters with only 14 boys participating. However, this problem was compensated for by a number of fine individual performances. Showing fine individual perform- ances were John Burke and Keith Stew- ard who each set three school records, Burke being elected most valuable per- former. Tim Lang was elected most improved, while John Wingert was named team captain. Also having fine years were John Stephens in the mile and Doug Krause in the 880. One highlight of the year for the Rockets was their second-place finish in the conference meet, finishing only behind Marathon. Another was the strong showing of John Burke and Keith Stewart in the WIAA tourna- ment. Both Burke and Stewart qual- ified for sectionals, with Burke also going to the state meet in both the high and low hurdles. He received a 2nd in the high hurdles. 1. The freshmen were very strong and should continue to get better in years to come. The team did not have anyone who qualified for the sectional meet and therefore did not send anyone on to state. Throughout the season though, many school records were broken along with many individuals breaking their own rec- ords as they continued to improve. Among the school records set were Bonnie Bauer in the mile with a time of 5:45.21; Barb Kobs setting the record in the first-year two-mile event with a time of 13:32.13: Diane Griepentrog in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.25; Jackie Johnson in the 220 yard hurdles with a time of 35.23; Amy Gardner set a new discus throw record of 90’70”; and the 880 relay team con- sisting of Trudy Vaughan, Diane Griepentrog, Mary Wingert, and Jackie Johnson set a new record with a time of 1:56.2. 1. The fifth member of the team to begin the season was freshman Todd Weister. Seven other students signed up to lean about the game of golf. By the time the weather permitted all the golf members to swing clubs, only one dropped out of golfing. Spencer is the only school in the Marawood Conference to field a golf team and therefore the golf matches were in- dependently played with no team rating. However, Spencer’s golf team won three matches, lost two matches and managed fairly well in a triangular and in the Marshfield regional match. The golf program was set up, hopefully, to help students (girls included) to learn about golfing and to provide a health ful skill in adult life. 1. The four classes competed in such events as, the balloon relay, tug-of- war, pretzel eating contest, tricycle race, dribble race, frisbee toss, and the people race. Profits from the day went to the FFA to extend the Outdoor Student Lounge. Besides being a little cool the day was a success, with the freshman astounding all by taking first, the se- niors coming in second, the sopho- mores taking third, and the Juniors brought up the rear with fourth place. 1 1. A full schedule provided the young men with the opportunity to wrestle several times throughout the season. Emphasis was not placed upon winning or loosing as much as building skills for varsity years ahead. Wrestling is one of the only sports that gives the small person a chance to partic- ipate. No matter what size person participated this year, all had fun during the season. Our goal for next year is to have more young fellows become interested and participate in wrestling. 1. When there are clouds of gray . . . Until I think about the things . . . That happened yesterday . . . I do not mean the day before . . .or those of months ago . . . But all the yesterdays in which . . . I had the chance to grow . . . I think of opportunities . . . that I allowed to die . . . And those I took advantage of . . . Before they passed me by ... And I remember that the past . . . Presented quite a plight . . . But somehow I endured it and . . . The future seemed all right . . . And I remind myself that I . . . Am capable and free . . . And my success and happiness . . . Are really up to me. James Metcalfe
