All to Myself All to myself I think of you, Think of the things we used to do, Think of the things we used to say, Think of each happy bygone day, Sometimes I sigh, and sometimes I smile, But I keep each olden, golden while All to myself. Wilbur D. Nesbit ROCKET 1977 Published by the Rocket Staff of Spencer High School Spencer, Wisconsin 54479 Volume XXII Through the Looking Glass Remember the first day of school? Each one came, each anticipating something different than the other. Some dread- ed the long days at school and the work that came with it. Others looked forward to it; as something to do after a some- what long, boring summer. It is impossible to recapture all that happens in one school year. But we hope through our efforts you’ll remember things that were, no matter how small, important. Even the mo- ments that were boring had something unique ... and some- thing worthwhile to remember. We hope this book brings back to you some of the better memories. 4 Table of Contents Student Life ..............6 Seniors ..................15 Underclassmen ............27 Organizations.............41 Sports ...................65 Junior High...............94 Advertising..............105 The Way It Was 6 7 The Enforcers 1. Work Unlimited All students and faculty of Spencer School are largely de- pendent upon our cooks and custodians, although many do not realize it. With the new additions to the school, the cus- todians and their helpers are kept busier than ever keeping hallways and classrooms clean. They do a gallant job of clean- ing up after students and keeping equipment in working or- der. The cooks also have new facilities with which to work. They now have a large kitchen with two lunchrooms and two lunch lines to get the hungry students fed and back to class on time. The result of their job is outstanding. M Seniors Say, “Smile . . It was probably the last chance for the whole senior class to get together and share “the good times”. The program consisted of eating an excellent meal, speeches, giving out of awards, and a last good-bye. With good food, surroundings and friends, the Senior Banquet is one that will never be forgotten. 7W 26 Underclassmen 28 Glen Aumann Dirk Bauer Kurt Bauer Karyn Boe John Burke Sharon Butler Mike Byners Randy Cournoyer Carol Cook Cathy Cressman Rick Freeman Jeff Graves Ronald Griepentrog Dennis Hinrichsen Tom Huber Michelle Huotari Neil Jacobitz Jeff Jakel Jackie Johnson Janet Jonet 29 1. Well, they work hard, and often long after everyone else is enjoying themselves. They do their job without much recognition. They work all year long and after summer vacation has be- gun. This is when they begin to wonder if they can really do it. When the last page is finally sent in, it is with a deep sense of accomplishment. Only then can they say, “We did it—and we had fun, too!” 1 2 1. The Band Plays on With a new director, the Spencer High band has come a long way. They started performing last summer, marching in various parades, including our own at Spencerama Days. Dur- ing the school year, they performed many concerts, including the Christmas concert, the “Music in our School” concert, and the Fine Arts Festival. In the spring they went to Strat- ford for the district solo-ensemble contest. From there ten people continued to state. Linda DiUlio, clarinet solo; Lorrie Schafer, Mary Keyes, Nate Hastings, trombone trio; and Jeff Graves, Tom Weister, Marlene Luepke, Karyn Boe, Dawn Cournoyer, and Theresa Strey, percussion ensemble. Each of these received seconds. To close the year, they performed at Marshfield for the Spring Festival and received a second on their class B selections. 1. To welcome the holidays, they performed at the Christmas Concert and continued to sing in the Mid-Winter Concert for “Music in our School” week. In the spring, the students traveled to Stratford for the Solo-Ensemble Festival and presented a concert for the com- munity. Steph Sautner received a first on her class A piano solo at Stratford and continued on to state. There she re- ceived a second. Along with the Fine Arts Festival, they per- fommed a Pops Concert and were given awards for their fine achievements. Activities ranged from sending dele- gates to the National Convention in Kansas City, to holding the district Parlimentary and Creed Contest at Spencer. Other activities include athletic activities and judging contests. Spencer’s Chapter was considered a National Superior Chapter, and was recognized in Safety and Building Our American Communities (BOAC). The FFA initiated the BOAC project of building the student lounge, which is being constructed by building trades and horticulture classes, the funds being raised by the student government. 1 1. This is entertainment where the actors announce a theme and then play it out. This play dealt with the American female and her relationships with the world and with men in particular. Considering this was the Drama Club’s first attempt at this type of theatre, it was quite successful. It was also the 19th production of the Masque and Bauble. 57 Let the Show Begin THE IMAGINARY INVALID proved to be a challenge for the cast and crews and a delight for the audiences. Our first attempt at classic theater was successful from both points of view. If much of the audience seemed to feel that “this was the best play you’ve ever done,” who were we to argue? Mo- liere’s classic put-down of the medical profession came through loud and clear. 1. “Open your mouth, stick out your tongue, shut your mouth.” 2. “Great masters of rhubarb and liverpills...” 3. “You could never marry without your father’s consent, and now he can never give it.” 4. “Lungs!” 1. He’s dead!” 4. “You will fall into a state of A-Pepsia.” 5. “No longer an Imaginery Invalid—But, in your own right, ‘Doctor Imaginaire’.” Acting and Stagecraft 1. Ten Years of Success 2 The Masque and Bauble not only held its annual drama banquet, but also the 10 year alumni banquet. It was the tenth year for drama at Spencer High, thanks to Mrs. Ran- now. The banquet was held at the Charlois Supper Club on A- pril 30. After a good meal Miss Smith entertained us. She pre- sented slides from plays throughout the past years. Masques and Baubles were handed out to those who have done their share to help out. Next years officers were announced and the Ray Harrell Drama award was presented to Phil Kerk- sieck for an outstanding job in the drama department. 1. Phil receiving the Ray Harrell Drama Award. 2. “See what I have!” 3. “Aw, shucks!” 4. “And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for.” 5. “And this one ...” 6. “Anyone know when we eat?” 3 61 Nineteen Go to State The forensics program plays an important role in the total program of education in our high school. It provides a variety of practical experiences in effective oral communication. Eleven categories offer a wide variation so that the student may choose to work with material from a favorite author, material he himself has researched and written, material of current interest or material of a more traditional background. Students work with their coaches on a regular basis to perfect their delivery and interpretation. This year, over thirty students participated in forensics at the local contest, with seven finally achieving an A rating and a gold medal at the state contest in Madison on April 23. They are John Wingert, Cyndi Prokopinski, Matt Berrier, De- anna Stephens, Dawn Hopfensperger, Kathy Johnson, and Karen Boe. Anyone familiar with the program will agree that this is a tremendous achievement, and will also agree that the greatest value of forensics lays not only with medals but with the confidence and sense of achievement it brings to the par- ticipants. 1 1. The eleven members, rep- resentatives from the four classes and several clubs, planned Homecoming week activities, Homecoming dance and the Christmas dance. They decided not to continue the project of donating money and presents to the Sunburst Home at Christ- mas. The biggest project this year was sponsoring the Spring 0- lympics. The proceeds went towards the construction of the new outdoor student lounge. 1. A scene from the Spring Olympics. 2. FRONT: Jill Johnson, Linda Schwantes, Rhonda Jicinsky, Sue Diers. Cheerleading practice started in June and ended concur- ently with the boys' wrestling and basketball seasons. Much time was spent drilling on cheers, working out formations, and creating pom-pom routines. In addition to coordinating activities for Parents' Night, the girls also drew poster to advertise the games and matches. 1. FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS FIRST ROW: Tammy Schafer, Trudy Scefeld. Their spirit encouraged others to be peppy, and their enthusiasm was greatly appreciated. The students were kept busy selling pins and patches for football, wrestling, and basketball. They also helped out on several Parents’ Nights by bringing such things as bars and cookies. Additionally, a record hop was sponsored to raise extra money. Girls Continue to Advance The members of the OGA consist of the girls who have lettered in the var- ious girls sports as managers, statisti- cians or, of course, the athletes. The Rock- ets started the season in full gear as it won 3 straight games, only to loose the next 4 ball games in a row. To break their loosing streak, the Rockets rolled over Athen’s 38 to 7, to ruin Athen’s Homecoming. The final of the season saw a fired-up Spencer team almost pull the upset of the year as it lost in overtime to the Marawood tri Champi- ons 21 to 14. Although Rocket fans didn’t always see winning football, they saw exciting football as 3 games were decided by 1 touchdown differ- ences and 2 other games were decided by a touchdown in overtime. For their outstanding individual ef- forts Steve Huber, Greg Rogers, and Terry Sternitzsky received All-Confer- ence Honors: Tim Bender received hon- orable mention honors. Those 4 seniors along with Doug Schulz., Dave Griepen- trog, Earl Pickett, and Will Lattimer will be missed next year. The Rockets will have 13 returning lettermen next fall. 1. Halls were decorated on Monday and Tuesday; this was followed by the slave auction and sucker day on Wednesday. Slaves—which included our principal, Mr. Colletti—did the “dirty work” for their masters. Friday, Grieser Day, found many students in “Fifties’ ” attire-humorus to them, nostal- gic for the faculty. Entertainment that night was provided by the “Hired Hand” playing bluegrass. Later in the evening King Steve Huber and Queen Irene Zuege were crowned, and the entire Homecoming Court was highlighted in the Grand March. 1. The Rockets just couldn’t put it together and lost the next four matches to Rib Lake, Pittsville, Loyal (nonconference), and Edgar. The girls came back to pick up a victory over Marathon, then to lose two matches to Athens and Abbotsford. The Rockets pulled off one more victory, a nonconference match, against Loyal. The girls ended their season with a 2-5 conference record and a 3-6 overall. The girls’ team then participated in Sub Regionals held at Granton. The Rockets beat Granton 2 games and won 1 game against Stratford, allowing them to continue on to Regionals. At Regionals the Rockets won 2 games to beat Owen-Withee and lost to Athens and Greenwood, elimina- ting them from the tournament. Spencer will be losing 9 lettering seniors. They are: Jodi Krasselt, Julie Diers, Kathy Johnson, Mary Hebert, Steph Sautner, Wendy Day, Jill Johnson, Julie Kasper, and Brenda Seehafer. Next years returning lettermen are: Juniors—Carrie Strebe, Jackie Johnson; Sophomore—Lori Lekie. Also return- ing to help Spencer out next year are the players of the J.V. and Freshman team. 1. This past wrestling year was very encouraging for the Rockets. The combination of five senior wrestlers with seven young, sometimes inexperienced, team members resulted in continued improvement. Year’s end found a dual meet record of 6-5-2-the first winning season in any sport in three years. “Congratulations wrestlers, for your fine effort!” Improvement manifested itself the latter part of the season with the Rockets having 7 place winners at the Wausau East Invitational and the Conference Tournament. At the Region- al Tournament, four Rocket wrestlers placed, and the team finished fifth out of a field of eleven teams. Freshman Jay Krasselt placed fourth with a record of 15-10; Earl Pickett placed third with a record of 17-7-2; Will Latimer placed sec- ond with a record of 19-8-1 qualifying for the Sectional Tour- nament where he lost the first round to the eventual state Champion, Pat Swetlick. Wayne Vaughn captured the Re- gional crown at 167 pounds and qualified for the Sectional Tournament where he lost in a close match to Auburndale’s competitor of the same weight. Wayne set a new season re- cord with a fine 24-4-1, winning the coveted “takedown” award. 1. Coach Zenner gives a pep talk before a match. 2. As a whole, their season wasn’t too successful, but certain individuals rose above the rest. Jackie Johnson broke the school record for the 110 yard hurdles with a time of 17.8. The record for the mile run was broken by Betty Burke with a time of 5:54.11. The 880 yard relay team consisting of Jill Johsson, Mary Win- gert, Trudy Vaughan and Jackie Johnson, broke the old rec- ord with a time of 1.51.2. The mile relay team, consisting of Jill Johnson, Steph Sautner, Kathy Johnson, and Wendy Day, went on to state after placing 2nd at the Sectional Tourna- ment held at Edgar. Five seniors will be leaving the team. They are Steph Sautner, Mary Hebert, Wendy Day, Jill John- son and Kathy Johnson. This years MVP was given to Steph Sautner. 1. The athletes they had, gave everything they could and ended up with some fine individual performances. John Burke broke three school records: 880 yard run with a time of 2:03.2, 330 yard low hurdles at 41.9, and tied the high jump at 5’10”. Earl Pickett broke the shotput with a throw of 44’3 in- ches and the 880 yard relay team, con- sisting of Steve Huber, John Burke, Vance Cook, Greg Rogers, with a time of 1:39. After finishing 2nd at the Ed- gar sectionals, John Burke will be ad- vancing to state in the 880 yard run. 1. The Rockets over-all record was 3-8. The team beat Marathon, Pittsville, and Loyal, as well as losing 4 ballgames by 2 runs or less. Pitching duties were mainly handled by Mark Shupe and Mike Bymers. Mike Bymers also led the team in hitting, with a .434 batting average. Mike Seitz was voted the most valuable player by his teammates for his hitting and defen- sive play at shortstop. Honorable men- tion—All Conference honors went to Mark Shupe as a pitcher, Mike Seitz, Jerry Krause as infielders, and Mike By- mers as an outfielder. Of 13 lettermen, only the team captain, Tim Bender, was a senior. 1. Baseball Team-ROW 1: Carrie Strebe, Lorrie Schafer; Managers. It turned out to be a beautiful day as the games got under way at approximately one o’clock. This also gave us a great opportunity to miss a whole afternoon of school. Profits from the day were to go to the FFA for the con- struction of the new student lounge being built behind the school. These profits totaled S469. Participants were charged 25|6and spectators were charged 50)5. Each of the five teams paid S75 to participate. SIHBM 1 The events were judged on a point system with the sophomores muster- ing up a total of 53 points for first place and a prize of $125. Second place and S100 went to the juniors with 48 points, a tie for third gave both seniors and faculty $64.50, and fifth place and $25 went to the fresh- man with 31 points. 1. The boys worked very hard and showed con- tinued improvement. The only losses the team had enroute to a 10-2 season were both at the hands of Edgar. The 7th grade basketball team, with a win-loss record of 3-9, could have had a disappointing season. However, the plusses of the year were greater than the minuses. In only one of the nine losses was the team blown out of the game. All the players worked hard in practice, and nobody quit the team which is an indication of their loyalty and dedication. Hard work, physical and mental maturity, and proper atti- tude will all contribute to the team’s success in the future. 1. 8th GRADE CHEERLEADERS First Row: Cheerlead- ing Advisor, Mrs. Kundinger, K.
