Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1974 volume:

Memories, bubbling up in the stagnant recesses of our minds; Struggling to surface and stay alive, making their way over traps and partitions we have created. Likewise the stream of life . . . twisting and turning at each new venture, exploring all possible facets of opportunity and experience; Not to be permanently hindered by any obstacles in its way. Like some low and mournful spell we whisper that sad word “farewell.” Friday, May 24, marked the departure of the 63 members of the class of '74. Three students gave speeches at the commencement. Their speeches brought out the feelings, fears, hopes, and aspirations shared by the class. Speakers were Brenda Kuehmichel, Tom Yost, and John Day. FHA The FHA, one of the largest school organizations, boasts 75 members. The FHA attended a rally designed to help clubs get into the Act with Impact program, the state theme; put on the traditional Christmas tea; and went carolling to some of the homes of Spencer's senior citizens. Also along singing lines was the trip the group took to Marshfield. They gave performances at the Conva- lescent Home, the apartments for the low income elderly, and the pediatrics ward of St. Joseph's Hospital. LEFT: OFFICERS: S. Felton, Hist.; N. Krause, Pari.; D. The Quill and Scroll Banquet is held to honor those students who devote time and effort to the annual and newspaper. This year's banquet was held on Monday, May 6, at the United Methodist Church. The guest speaker was Mr. Sokolowski, a journalism instructor at the UW Marshfield campus. Mr. Sokolowski talked on the various means of journalism and the importance of journalism in society. New members were inducted into the National Quill and Scroll Society. The announcement of next year's editors was also made at that time. 44 Forensics The forensics turnout was not very large this year, as only 16 students participated. These 16 were top-notch students, and they proved it by bringing home a slate full of A-ratings at the sub-district contest. At the district contest in Stevens Point five students earned A's making them eligible to go to the State contest. These students were seniors,Brenda Kuehmichel, Susan Harrell, and Mich- ele Wingert; and sophomores, Pat Muclle, and Susan Wingert. The new Natural look? By the Waters Spoon River Adam Of Babylon Anthology Eve BY THE WATERS OF BABYLON, by Stephen Vincent Benet, dealt with the question Does MAN have the determination to survive? The chorus members learned the art of group speaking, how to get just the right amount of kink in their hair and how short their shorts could be while sitting—without closing the show for indecent exposure. Members of the cast were: A1 Jicinsky, Clint Shot- well, Bill Ausbourne, Sharon Jensen, Gary Sternitzky, Spence Graves, Sue Burnett, Bob Johnson, Phyllis Gauger, Jess Nowak, Julie Mellenthin, Bruce Harrell, Kathy Johnson, and Student Director, Dave Anderson. This one-act play was adapted from a book by Edgar Lee Masters. SPOON RIVER proved quite a chal- lenge for its cast, as no conversation took place and the members had to adapt themselves to more than one character. The lines were actually a collectin of epitaphs of dead people given by their ghosts. The only props used on stage were tombstones as the story took place in the Spoon River Cemetery. Members of the cast were: Gary Felten, Brenda Kuehmichel, Deb Nall, John Day, Michele Win- gert, Pat Mueller, Dave Ammons, Deon Wichman, and Student Director; Lori Hendrickson. This light-hearted comedy ex- emplified the first encounter (bat- tle?) between man and woman. Only Mark Twain could have created this play with its blend of humor, sus- pense, satire, pain, and gentleness. Tom Yost portrayed Adam, Sue Har- rell was Eve, and Sue Jonett was Student Director. 47 Masque Bauble Presents Major Barbara - iST Rehearsals can be tiring. We're companions in misfortune, Rummy.” 48 Sue knows concentration is what makes a good play great. Bill tells Barbara Aw ain't to be bought. How could you strike an old woman? Go; and may you have a great meeting! Barbara and Dolly, die young lovers. Major Barbara, by George Bernard Shaw, proved to be one of the most difficult productions tackled by the Drama Club. The cast even had to acquire English accents. The play was based on the conflict of who will be the Undershaft heir and succeed to the cannon foundry?” The catch was that die heir must be an adopted foundling, and as far as Undershaft was concerned, there were no de- cent heirs to be found. The Salvation band was the highlight of the play. Most of the band members didn't even know which end of the instrument to blow. Add the Army uniforms and pomp to music, and it equaled excitement. The school newspaper hasn't been looked on too fav- orably the past couple of years and hasn't had a very big following. Few people fail to realize all that goes into making the paper. It takes cooperation, work, and frustra- tion involved in thinking of what to write about, writing the articles with interest, and getting the news in on time. The paper is not infallible, but what is? The paper enables students and faculty members at Spencer and the surrounding schools to get first-hand in- formation on all the happenings at school. This year the paper has covered all the football, basketball, wrestling, track, and baseball events, as well as keeping up with the FHA, FFA, band, chorus, drama club and forensics. A tribute to those who made it possi- blc--from the Editor: Somebody said that it couldn't be done, But she with a chuckled replied That maybe it couldn't, but she would be one who wouldn't say so till she'd tried. So she buckled right in with the trace of a grin on her face. If she worried she hid it. She started to sing as she tackled the Tiling that couldn't be done, and she did it. There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done, There are thousands to point out to you, one by one, The dangers that wait to assail you. But just buckle in with a bit of a grin, Just take off your coat and go to it; Just start as you tackle the tiling That cannot be done, and you’ll do it. Pittsville was ranked number four in the state at the time. Half time activities included a marching performance by the band and the promenading of the Homecoming court as well as introduction of the parents. The game was the culmination of a week of home- coming activities. Features were Slave Day, Sucker Day, Student Take-Over Day, Red-White Day, and the pep rally and bonfire. Results of the hall decoration judging were an- nounced with the seniors capturing first place. This year the snake dance was revived and was termed successful. The Rockets ended the season with a fantastic 8-1 record, losing only to a tough Marathon team in a closely fought battle. We couldn't have picked a better year to initiate the new athletic field. All games played on the field were won--and rather handily at that. Perhaps, having such great facilities was enough to spark all the drive that was penned up in previous seasons. Eight seniors provided the nucleus for the team. What dynamos they were, ending their high school football careers in such a grand style! Good playing was exhibited throughout the squad. On the field they all thought the same--WIN!--and their teamwork proved it. The Rockets landed three on the Marawood All-Conference team: Senior Tom Dumler, and Juniors Ron Mellenthin and Jeff Schumacher. Tom Gluefin- gers Dumler was also chosen as a Channel--7 Allstar. The 1973-74 football season will go down in Spencer's History as one of the finest and will be talked about for years to come! They were Jim Krasselt and Craig Eirich in 4th place, Mike Forst and Mark Meinders in 3rd place, Lester Ecke in second place, and Dennis Wojcik was con- ference champ in his weight. Dennis and Randy Klimmer placed in the sub-regional tourney held at Medford. From there they went to Cadott for the regional.
