In an attempt to revitalize school spirit the Seniors decided the classes would decorate the high school and be judged on their efforts. To add excitement a series of actviity days were in- itiated; Monday became Inside-Out Day, Tuesday brought on Greaser-Freak Day, Wednesday found everyone licking sucers, on Thursday students came attired as hobos, and Student-Takeover Day fell on Friday. Friday evening found the cheerleaders presenting a skit-filled pep rally capped by the annual bonfire. Satur- day, the 30th of September, brought a hard fought football game in which the Rockets emerged victorious over Mara- thon, 14-0. The celebration was completed that evening when Tayles played for the Homecoming dance. BELOW: Bruce Bonitz runs into opposition. Three One-Act Plays The Drama Club, under the direction of Mrs. Rann- ow, presented the three one-act plays on October 28th and 29th. The hard work of the cast and crew was greatly appreciated by the audiences. MOTHERLOVE, by Swedish playwright August Stin- berg, began the program. It featured Michele Wingert, Brenda Kuehmichel, Dawn Gauger, and Debbie Nall. Next, THE MARRIAGE PROPOSAL, by Chekov, de- lighted the audiences. The ironic comedy was well per- formed by Tom Yost, Michelle Manina and Bill Ausboume bourne. Bringing the evening to a close was Shirley Jack- son's THE LOTTERY. The thought-provoking play sported a large cast, including; Clint Shotwell, Jeff Wingert, April Graves, John Day, Allen Jicinsky, Marie Kommer, Sheri Felton, Greg Griepentrog, Brett Shotwell, Barb Neidlein, Deb Marcott, Barb Wilson, Bob Johnson, Debi Kowalk, Spence Graves, Dave Ammons, Jesse Nowak, Sue Harrell, Jeff Johnson, Lonna Potz, Tom Yost, Mary Barkow, Bill Ausboume, and Tom Day. 65 RIGHT: Mr. Vandergelder, do you think you could come to New York today? The turn-of-the-century farce was presented on March 30, 31, and April 1, in the R. J. Tack Auditorium. The play revolves around Dolly Levi, a widow who likes to arrange things, and whom the rich Horace Van- dergelder has engaged to locate a suitable bride for himself. After a number of humorous twists and turns in the story, Mrs. Levi captures Mr. Vandergelder for herself. This play was one of the most ambitious productions ever undertaken by the Masque and Bauble; and it was a most successful venture for all involved---cast, crew, and audience. 67 The Masque Bauble MIDDLE RIGHT: FIRST ROW: N. Improved Rockets Finish Strong The young Rockets who suffered early in the season because of inexperience finished the season in fine style winning three of their last five games. Week after week they improved until the ultimate goal of victory was ac- complished against Marathon for Homecoming. Rocket fans saw exciting football all year as four of the games Spencer lost were by one touchdown or less. The biggest accomplishment of the season was the molding of several individual efforts into a complete team effort. Whether their contribution was big or small every boy on the team was responsible for making Spencer both offensively and defensively one of the best teams in the conference. This was good for 3rd in the confer- ence behind Nekoosa and Abborts- ford. The season began with a victory over Rib Lake and continued through the first 3 games of the tournaments. The tourneys began with a very sat- isfying victory over Abby at Athens. The tournaments then moved to Spencer, where the Rockets defeated Granton, but then lost to Thorp. Senior leaders were Dave Shupe, leading scorer and rebounder in the conference and captain, Greg Grie- pentrog. With those returning lettermen, the future of basketball in Spencer looks very bright. Perhaps the high- light of the season was the Conference Championship held at Spencer. Four members of the squad placed in this tournament. They were Les Ecke at 185 lbs. (4th), Jim Krasselt at 132 lbs. (4th), Bob Doubleday at 155 lbs. (3rd), and Mike Forst at 138 lbs. (1st). Conference champion Mike Forst advanced to the regional competition and placed second. This qualified Mike for the sectionals at Schofield, where he lost a decision in his first match. All members of the squad will be returning next year for what should prove to be an interesting season. The forty-one girls that competed in these three sports were coached by Miss Linda Fenske. Despite the lack of experience, all of the teams did well, improving as the seasons progressed. Honors came in the form of the Marawood Conference Sportsmanship Award for the volleyball team. Perhaps the highlight of the year was the outstanding performance of Sue Jonett on the track team, who received first place for shot put at the conference, sectional, and regional tournaments. Next year all three teams will have experienced members coming back and the result should be a good season for each. UPPER LEFT: Bev smashes in another score. MIDDLE: BASKETBALL: D. Sawyer, M.
