Best in Five Years After a disappointing first-game loss in a non-conference game at Auburndale, the Rockets rebounded to a 9-7 conference mark. This was good for 5th place, Spencer's best finish in five years. The Rocket team was led by three Seniors, Rick Sampson, Edd Driekosen, and Lyle Weber, each of whom contributed greatly to the success of the team. Sampson was a great team leader, as well as a conference leader in scoring and rebounding. Driekosen and Weber added rebounding power and strong defensive play. Junior Dave Shupe led the Rockets scoring attack as well as rebounding, taking yeoman honors in several games. Also a leader in scoring and the team playmaker was Greg Griepentrog. Greg handled his guard duty well, and also did a fine job on defense. Along with Griepentrog at guard was Sophomore Tom Dumler, who played as well inside as outside, using determination and hustle to make up for lack of height. The Rocket bench strength consisted of Jeff Johnson, Jeff Pilz, Steve Reigel, Tom Yost, and Gary Felton. The biggest highlight of the season was a 106-57 drubbing of Auburndale. The Rockets put it all together in the first quarter and didn't slow down until the final buzzer. Scoring leaders in the game were Shupe, Griepentrog, Sampson, Dumler, and Driekosen with25, 24, 21, 15, 11 points respectively. Spencer found itself pitted against Stratford in the first game of the tournament. The Rocket's played a spirited game, but lost 79-55. So the 1971-72 Spencer Rocket basketball season came to a close, but the success shall not be forgotten. is
