John Harris Seniors Brian Pickett Real Athlete's Feet 1971 Football Season The revolutions of an eliptical body were fervently watched as they decided the outcome of the 1971 football season. And though that orbital football was handled with great expertise, the Spencer Rocket’s concluded the season with a 2-7 record. Rallying under the direction of Coach Stewart, the team provided the spectators with thrilling gridiron action. Often considered to be the underdog, the Rocket’s undaunt- ed spirit compensated for a lack of experience. This spirit emplified by a return of kickoff for a touchdown during the game against Nekoosa. The Rockets added some sparkle to their playing after their first victory, with the appearance on the field of brand new uniforms. However, the new attire was less protective than was needed, for several Rocket players were downed with injuries. Barring injuries and losses, the season nevertheless provided a lot of good football for the fans to watch. In recognition of their ability, several Spencer players re- ceived honors in the all-conference team and the Channel 7 All-Stars. Homecoming Odyssey The twenty-fifth year of football at Spencer was celebrated throughout a week of activities during Homecoming 1971. Alumni football players and cheerleaders from a quarter of a century were invited, and honored at a get-together sponcered by the Pep Club. Homecoming week began October 4, with the decoration of the school. This activity was undertaken by the senior class, in- stead of building a float. However, the other three classes did set themselves to the task of molding chicken wire and napkins into various creations. Friday and Saturday mingled tradition with innovation. The pep rally, bonfire, and parade were held as usual. However a con- cert, featuring Dave Yonker, was presented instead of a dance, on Saturday night. Presiding over the activities were King Gary Buse and his queen Bev Oelrich. The main event of the week, the game, brought the Spencer Rockets and the Abbotsford Falcons into conflict on the football field. Though both teams played a rousing game, Abbotsford emerged victorious. Dave performs on the stage, singing a variety of self- composed folk tunes and ballads, as well as popular songs. King Gary and Queen Bev enjoy their ride. n The first-place float, by the Juniors, incorporates the 25-year theme. FRONT: D. Ewald, B. Wilson, K. Hein, S. Blanchard, D. Kowalk. MIDDLE: D. Theodote, played by Barb Krohn, exchanges anecdotes with Socrates' wife, by Janean Stelzl, in Barefoot in Athens. Debbie Marcott, as Joan, denies her visions to the judges. Socrates, played by Tom Yost, receives comfort from his wife. Maxwell Anderson’s Mark Pryer, as the Inquisitor, questions Joan's visions. Plays Are Performed On October 30 and 31, the Drama Club presented scenes from three full-length plays by the American playwright, Max- well Anderson. The scenes were cut from Barefoot in Athens, a play set in Greece in the time of Socrates; Elizabeth the Queen, set in England during the reign of Elizabeth; and Joan of Lorraine, portraying the trial of Joan of Arc. Preparation for the production provided the students with a five-week exercise of building a charater on stage. The chal- lenge was accepted by sixteen actors and a thirty-nine mem- bered production staff. Barefoot in Athens was later performed by the cast and crew at a drama workshop held at Superior, Wisconsin. 13 LEFT TO RIGHT: G. Toltzman, Coach Livermore, L. We- ber, J, Pilz, G. Felton, S. Best in Five Years After a disappointing first-game loss in a non-conference game at Auburndale, the Rockets rebounded to a 9-7 conference mark. This was good for 5th place, Spencer's best finish in five years. The Rocket team was led by three Seniors, Rick Sampson, Edd Driekosen, and Lyle Weber, each of whom contributed greatly to the success of the team. Sampson was a great team leader, as well as a conference leader in scoring and rebounding. Driekosen and Weber added rebounding power and strong defensive play. Junior Dave Shupe led the Rockets scoring attack as well as rebounding, taking yeoman honors in several games. Also a leader in scoring and the team playmaker was Greg Griepentrog. Greg handled his guard duty well, and also did a fine job on defense. Along with Griepentrog at guard was Sophomore Tom Dumler, who played as well inside as outside, using determination and hustle to make up for lack of height. The Rocket bench strength consisted of Jeff Johnson, Jeff Pilz, Steve Reigel, Tom Yost, and Gary Felton. The biggest highlight of the season was a 106-57 drubbing of Auburndale. The Rockets put it all together in the first quarter and didn't slow down until the final buzzer. Scoring leaders in the game were Shupe, Griepentrog, Sampson, Dumler, and Driekosen with25, 24, 21, 15, 11 points respectively. Spencer found itself pitted against Stratford in the first game of the tournament. The Rocket's played a spirited game, but lost 79-55. So the 1971-72 Spencer Rocket basketball season came to a close, but the success shall not be forgotten. is FRONT: D. Schumacher, J. Stemitzky, D. Forst, M. Foret, M. Meindere, R. Klimmer. BACK: B. Don’t Drink the Water Vicki Huber is the proud recipient of the Ray Harrell Memorial Award presented at the Drama Club Banquet held in the spring. I had a ball. I'd rather do comedy than anything, stated Mrs. Rannow. Her enthusiasm it seemed was conta- gious. On opening night, April 7th, the Drama Club pre- sented Woody Allen’s Don't Drink the Water to a packed house. The two-act comedy continued to draw good crowds the next two nights. This zany play takes place in an American embassy behind the Iron Curtain. Walter Hollander, a New Jersey caterer, his wife and daughter rush to the safety of the em- bassy followed closely by Krojak and the police, who accuse them of spying. But the embassy is not quite the haven they expect. The Ambassador is away and his trouble-prone son, Axel Magee, has been left in charge. Now the problem is to get the Hollanders home. A spy exchange, arranged by the efficient assistance of Kilroy, falls through when the other man commits suicide. This leads to a rather compli- cated plot with help from Father Drobney (a priest who has been trapped in the embassy for 6 years) where the Hol- landers pretend to be guests at an embassy party who casually leave the country. Everything is going well— until Hollander shoots the returning Ambassador in the leg. Finally, appreciating the clothes of a drunken sultan and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Hollander escape. Their daughter, Susan, acquires diplomatic immunity by marrying Axel. 19 c Brian Pickett launches the shotput. Track Spencer's track team undertook a rebuilding year this past season. The team, consisting mostly of underclassmen, showed a lot of enthusiasm but was lacking in experience. After their poor showing this year, the boys should now have the experience necessary for a successful season next year. Ammons receives the baton from Sandley. However, this year it was decided that a teen dance would be more profitable and more applicable for the times. A dance featuring The Circus” (formerly Sound Street ) was held and various Rock tunes were per- formed. One of the highlights of this year's activities was the State FHA convention in June attended by Mary LaSee, Theresa Wojcik, Debbie Marcott, Janean Stelzl, and Mrs. Southworth. In the fall, there was an initiation of about thirty members at North Wood County Park. For Christmas, they entertained the members of the faculty at a Christ- mas Coffee Hour. Cookies made by the FHA mem- bers were passed out to the students for Valentine's Day and a party was held for the club members. The girls enjoyed a toboganning party at Perkins- town and swimming at Colby High. A style show entitled Apple Blossom Time was presented on April 25. The officers for the coming year were announced. On May 5th, the FHS members went on their annual trip to Milwaukee. The officers for the 1972-73 school year are shown here. Their positions were announced at the spring style show. 36 OFFICERS: D. The FFA of Spencer High School embarked on a very successful year in the fall of 1971. One of the first projects undertaken was the Marathon County soil and dairy judging contest, by seven members of the chapter; this was held in October. Our next venture was the preparation of a float for homecoming. Along with the FHA the FFA sponsors their annual tobogganing trip to Perkinstown. Members of the chapter, studied about coop- eratives by writing an essay on cooperation. The award winner for the year was Kenneth Schulz. As in the past years, the FFA sponsored the annual Farmers Institute, and also in March the boys participated in the Brown Jug tournament. The sophomores defeated the seniors in a very close game 27-25. This year the chapter along with the local Cooperative sent James Griepentrog to the Platte- ville Institute to study about how cooperatives are operated. On Awards Night two members of the chapter received special awards for the year. Alan Hoemke received the DeKalb Award and Dennis Wojcik received an award for top sales work for the year. The members were rewarded for their hard work by having a chance to go fishing in Canada after the school year. 37 Mr. Stewart presented athletic award plaques to those members of the Senior class who participated in one of the athletic programs at Spencer High in the last four years. Those receiving plaques were Ed Dreiko- sen, Lyle Weber, Rick Sampson, Terry Harder, John Manina, John Harris, Doug Schumacher, Wayne Gehrke, Kim Jasperson, Arv Hildebrandt, Gary Buse, and Brian Pickett. There was no planned entertainment or program for the evening. Instead the classmates remi- nisced about school life--reminding others of the good and bad . This fellowship also gave the grads a chance to discuss their future plans with each other. A quote from the school newspaper expresses the general sentiment of the evening. In our high school years we have had differences with teachers, parents, and friends alike. Let us not forget that these very same people were the ones who made it possible for us to advance this far. 41 The class is pictured here performing the song they chose, I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing. Mrs. Esther Rannow directed the class, adding to the enjoyment. 42 Seniors End High Graduation ceremonies for the class of 1972 at Spencer High School was held in the R.J. Address to the Seniors; The recent passage of the age of majority law by the state legislature is perhaps the greatest challenge facing all Wisconsin seniors. Many members of the older generation will, for awhile, be constantly watching to see if the teen-age adults are mature enough to assume the new responsibility. I do not feel that you have to prove yourself if you apply what you learned at home, in school and in your church. Legisla- tion doesn't make an adult. -James W.
