Through the use of perseverance, teamwork, and excel- lent ball control, the Spencer Rockets captured third place in the Marwood Conference in the 1970 football season. Rallying behind the leadership of Coach Stewart, the team finished the season with a winning 6-3-0 record. In com- memoration of the team’s success, a plaque was presented to all the players on the eve of Homecoming, and was ac- cepted by the team captain, Hilarian Driekosen. In the selection of all-conference players, Scott Oelrich was chosen in the position of linebacker. Ten other players received Honorable Mention. DuWayne eludes an Auburndale tackier. Homecoming Dance Climax Spectators watch Highway. of Big Week Flyer perform. I think we’re being watched. 1970 Homecoming activities began with the pep rally and bonfire on Friday, October 23. Saturday dawned a grey, drizzly day, and it became necessary to cancel the parade. However, the game proved to be the best of the season. Although Auburndale was the victor, winning 28 to 14, Spencer scored more points against them than any other school had. With this feeling of pride many attended the dance with entertainment by the Highway Flyer that night. 13 The three one-act plays “Will the Real Jesus Christ Please Stand Up,” “He Ain’t Done Right by Nell,” and “The Law- breakers” were very well done. Approxi- mately thirty students had parts; some having parts in two of the plays. “Will the Real Jesus Christ Please Stand Up” was performed at the University in Superior when the Drama Club traveled there a few weeks later. Wrestling under the direction of their new coach, Mr. Sautner, the grapplers finished the season with a 2-11 record. The team was backed by the five cheer- leaders and numerous enthusiastic fans. Highlighting the season was Parents’ Night, January 21. A half-time program was presented, in which the parents of the wrestlers and cheerleaders were introduced. Later that night, parent and fans were thrilled when the Rockets won an impressive victory over Marathon. Two Spencer wrestlers participated in the regional meet at Cadott. THE CRUCIBLE, by Arthur Miller, cen- ters around the Salem witch-hunts of the seventeenth century. It engulfs the endless struggle between the rights of free men and mass efforts to destroy them under the guise of defending decency. The student librarians are a bunch of kids the school couldn’t get along without. They shelve books, and help kids decipher codes so they can find what they need. If somebody gets rowdy in the library, one of those kids are there to tell who what’s what. And if the library’s pretty empty and Mrs. Gauger or Mrs. Zahn aren’t around, they sure come in handy as somebody to shoot the breeze with. The Annual joined the Quill and Scroll Society this year. The Society only had newspaper staff members on it until now. The kids were all pretty happy about this. As one of them stated, “Finally we get some outside recognition for our hard work. And belonging to Quill and Scroll is an ho- nor. 31 Under the leadership of their new director, Mr. Fosberg, the Rocket Band made their first appearance of the school year on October 10. The band marched at the Eau Claire Blue-Gold homecoming, displaying their musical, as well as mobile talent. On December 13, a Christmas concert was presented in conjunction with the chorus. Resurrecting an old tradition, it was enjoyed by parents and students alike. Preparation for the solo-ensemble contest, held April 2 at Aubumdale, got under way after Christmas vaca- tion. A number of students entered class A in hopes of going on to the state contest. With graduation, The Rocket band suffered the loss of ten seniors. How- ever, with the addition of next year’s freshmen, the future success of the band is assured. FRONT ROW: S. Carlson, S. Eckes, M. Meinders, C. Tippelt, D. Jacobitz, L. Potz, P. Zahn. BACK ROW: D. Among the various pro- grams presented, the Christmas Concert and Pops Concert stood as highlights of the year. Individual achievements among the musicians were rec- ognized through participation in the solo-Ensemble Contest, held at Auburndale on April 2. Mrs. Dorothy May of Medford gave a demonstration on techniques and ideas that could be used in the program. The Highlight of the year was the Style Show which the Chapter sponsors annually. Fashions modeled were those made by members of the FHA and the Home-Ec. classes. Future Farmers of America The Spencer Chapter of the Future Farmers of America began the year with their participation in the Marathon County Dairy and Soils Judging Contest. In October, the chapter got into the swing of the Home- coming celebration by building a float for the parade. Heavy snows complemented the annual FFA-FHA to- boggan party at Perkinstown in the early part of the year. The annual Farm Institute for area farmers was held in the latter part of February. It offered tips on dairy feeding as well as covering fertilizers and com blight. Two members of the chapter also participated in the Doughboy calf program. They were Steve Krause, who won the Midland Cooperative award, and Alan Hoemke. In the early spring, the boys competed for the coveted Little Brown Jug, symbol of proficiency in a refined version of barnyard basketball. The Seniors, after a grueling battle, eventually won the champion- ship. Probably the most popular activity of the year was the FFA fishing and recreational trip to Kenore, Ontario, Canada. The boys enjoyed the week; sleeping and relaxing in the sun, and even catching fish. Funds for the trip were raised by concessions and the sale of corn and oats. With a total of sixty-two members, the class of 1971 was the largest class ever to graduate from Spencer High School. The class chose deep purple caps and gowns, with white tassels. Both Sides” was the class song. This year it was the graduates’ choice to sing or not sing when the song was presented the night of Commencement. Standing in line backstage to re- ceive diplomas, there were mixed emotions. Some of the kids were sad about leaving, for some graduation meant leaving behind a lot of security, while others sported super grins as though to say “1 finally made it!” Coming off stage after receiving their diplomas, each graduate was pre- sented with a white rose, a token of remembrance from the Junior class. Did it have flowers? I’ve seen pictures of flowers. And I’d love to have smelled one! Whose river was this? You say it ran freely? Blue was its color? I’ve seen blue in some pictures, And I’d love to have been there! Tell me again, I need to know: The forest had trees. The meadows were green. The oceans were blue. And birds really flew— Can you swear this was true? 94 Who gray sky was this? Or was it a blue one? Nights there were breezes? I’ve heard records of breezes. And you tell me you’ve felt one. Tell me again, 1 need to know: The forest had trees. The meadows were green. The oceans were blue. And birds really flew - Can you swear this was true? -ballad by Tom Paxton 95 April 4 I stepped forth today and My little toe was stomped on, brisked over; bended, folded and mutilated. A tiny bruise did appear and I tried to comfort it. Soon a tear dropped upon the bruise and kissed its sorrow and pain away (with a tiny, tired, band-aide smile). 96
