THREE ON A BENCH IMPROMPTU THE PARDONER’S TALE One-Act Plays One of “Impromptu’s happier mo- ments. Instead of entering 1-act play com- petition, the Masque and Bauble held an evening of 1-act plays in the R. J. Tack Auditorium on October 10. Using arena staging, a varied program was presented to an enthusiastic audience. The first was a straight comedy, “Three on a Bench,” by Doris Estrada. This was followed by a modern adap- tation of “The Pardoner’s Tale” from Chaucer’s CANTERBURY TALES, and the third was a representative of modern theatre entitled “Impromptu” by Tas Mosel. The three plays per- mitted a wide range of acting and staging problems which the students handled well. A similar evening of the- atre is being planned for next year. One of these plays, “The Pardoner’s Tale,” was taken to a 1-act play clinic at WSU-Superior where it received ex- cellent criticisms and the institute’s technical award. In the center, surrounded by six pillars, was a fountain of sandstone blocks. An orches- trated rock-blues band, the “Universal Blues , played the theme song from the same movie for the grand march, which was choreographed by Linda Gauger. On the tables were long stemmed red roses as table favors. The king was chosen in a different manner than in pre- vious years. Mrs. Warren dealsajustice of her own. The SPIRAL STAIRCASE by F. Andrew Leslie opened on March 14th to a “standing room only” audience and proved once again that Spencer’s got it. The very difficult problems of staging an effective melodrama were handled adroitly by the cast and crews. The frosting on the cake was an in- vitation to take the play to Mequon for a performance at Caroline Academy. With only a skeleton crew and the cast assuming most of the production re- sponsibilities they performed for the student body and faculty there. They were warmly received and found the trip to be exhausting, but rewarding. “The Spiral Staircase99 Constable Williams interrogates the members of the household.
