Rocket Spencer High School Spencer, Wisconsin Volume XV Table of Contents 4 Homecoming . . . Reigning royalty Mike Cook and Kay Ziegahn. Sophomore Representatives Ed Driekosen and Marcia An derson. Freshmen: Chuck Hopfensperger and Debbie Brown Junior Court Representatives: Larry Driekosen and Sherry Carlson. Freshman entry, “Execute ’Em” takes first place. The week of October 6 through October 11 was marked by the 1969 Homecoming Activities. While float building proceeded, plans were being made for Saturday’s events. The cheerleaders added new innovations to the Friday night bon-fire by including two skits in the program. Then the football players led a torch light parade to the bon-fire. The annual parade started at 12:30 on Saturday after- noon, in which the Freshmen captured first pri2e in float competition. 6 Rockets attempt to carry out Homecoming pledge. Spirit, if not togetherness. Next, the Rockets took on the fierce Pittsville team and played a challenging game, but lost by a score of 28-16. The Spencer High Rocket Band provided half time entertain- ment at the game. The ’69 Homecoming Dance featured music by the rock group, the “Estate General”. This year’s royal couple, Mike Cook and Kay Ziegahn, were crowned by the ’68 royalty, Ted Metcalfe and Judy Dunbar, during the coronation cere- monies at 10:00 p.m. Homecoming Dance climaxes week’s activities. 7 1970 PROM COURT: Lou Ann Oelrich. Scott and Jean make their appearance on the dance floor. God save the King. Barb save the crown! April 25, 1970 was the date of this year’s Junior Prom. Reigning over the prom were Dennis Wahlers and Barb Neidlein. The gym was decorated in a Renaissance motif. On the blue and silver walls hung murals portraying scenes in the movie. “Romeo and Juliet”, from which the theme, A TIME FOR US, was taken. In the center, surrounded by six pillars, was a fountain of sandstone blocks. An orches- trated rock-blues band, the “Universal Blues , played the theme song from the same movie for the grand march, which was choreographed by Linda Gauger. On the tables were long stemmed red roses as table favors. The king was chosen in a different manner than in pre- vious years. Instead of automatically being the king because he was the class president, this year’s king was elected by popular vote. 9 THREE ON A BENCH IMPROMPTU THE PARDONER’S TALE One-Act Plays One of “Impromptu’s happier mo- ments. Instead of entering 1-act play com- petition, the Masque and Bauble held an evening of 1-act plays in the R. J. Tack Auditorium on October 10. Using arena staging, a varied program was presented to an enthusiastic audience. The first was a straight comedy, “Three on a Bench,” by Doris Estrada. This was followed by a modern adap- tation of “The Pardoner’s Tale” from Chaucer’s CANTERBURY TALES, and the third was a representative of modern theatre entitled “Impromptu” by Tas Mosel. The three plays per- mitted a wide range of acting and staging problems which the students handled well. A similar evening of the- atre is being planned for next year. One of these plays, “The Pardoner’s Tale,” was taken to a 1-act play clinic at WSU-Superior where it received ex- cellent criticisms and the institute’s technical award. Andrew Leslie opened on March 14th to a “standing room only” audience and proved once again that Spencer’s got it. The very difficult problems of staging an effective melodrama were handled adroitly by the cast and crews. The frosting on the cake was an in- vitation to take the play to Mequon for a performance at Caroline Academy. With only a skeleton crew and the cast assuming most of the production re- sponsibilities they performed for the student body and faculty there. They were warmly received and found the trip to be exhausting, but rewarding. “The Spiral Staircase99 Constable Williams interrogates the members of the household. We will remember him for his bright and questioning mind, his quiet wit and his inspiring talents. His direct hon- esty and imaginative independence made him a strong influ- ence and respected leader among his classmates. 12 ALLEN B. ANDERSON DENNIS BARGANDER “Barney” MICHAEL COOK “Mike” DAVID A. Sanity of Editors Threatened RIGHT: LOIS: “What is your opinion of typing for the annual staff?” JEAN: BELOW: Excedrin headache No. 48. Last year’s small yearbook staff of nineteen was bolstered this year by fourteen more people. There are five main staffs on the Rocket, which vary in size from thirteen on the subscription staff to one on the lay-out staff. The typing staff, headed by Jean Hein, is responsible for typing the copy and captions for the an- nual. Subscription editor, Donna Hardrath and her staff, undertake the subscrip- tion drive in January. Barry Yost and his staff cover the area of Spencer for pro- spective advertisers for the yearbook. In charge of picture taking are Chuck Graupner and his photo staff. Kevin Huotari, lay-out editor, plans the picture arrangement and hopes to have a staff next year. Our publishers, Inter-Collegiate Press, sponsored a seminar during the fall at Tomah, where they showed a number of new concepts in layout and design of an- nuals. With the help of Mr. Shaw, the advisor, and Mr. Keel, the photographer, we were able to make this yearbook an example of new innovations in graphic arts. 48 FRONT ROW: Feature Editor L. The ROCKETTE—A Journalistic Endeavor The 1969-70 ROCKETTE grew with each edition of the twelve that were pub- lished. Due to lack of experience and know-how the first edition seemed to have as many mistakes as there were words printed. However, under the guidance of the advisor, Miss Smith, and the improving editors, the ROCKETTE began to look more and more like the prize-winning publication it is. Subscriptions to the ROCKETTE rose to an all-time high during the 1969-70 school year. At the end of the year three-hundred papers were put out each is- sue, almost double the amount needed in previous years. In the fall, the editors of the ROCKETTE attended the Wisconsin Chippewa Valley Student Press Association Conference at Eau Claire. One of the highlights of the day came when ROCKETTE editor-in-chief, Peter Hagen, participated in a panel discussion entitied, “How We Produced an Award Winning Paper.” Again in the fall Peter Hagen, assistant editor Chris Keyes. Miss Smith, and Mrs. Rannow attended the Wisconsin Scholl Press Association Conference at Madison. The ROCKETTE won second place in the mimeo division for small newspapers. Also earning awards were Chris Keyes and Rick Neuenfeldt for their writing efforts in a MILWAUKEE JOURNAL, sponsored writing contest. Closing out the year was the annual Quill and Scroll Banquet. New Editors were named and new Quill and Scroll members were initiated. Mrs. Rannow received a special award for “1 Strane’s, The Green Room” The stage is now set for next year. With a new advisor. Miss Grabowski, and a new staff, the ROCKETTE will try and move on to greater heights in high school journalism. Vicky Huber digs through the as- signment box. 49 FRONT ROW: J. Manina. A. Quill Scroll LIBRARIANS There are 46 student librarians, and, as Mrs. Gauger com- mented, “We couldn’t run our library system without them.” There are many varying duties for a student librarian. Checking books in and out of the library, shelving books, checking and storing magazines, and making bulletin boards are only a few. In the grade school library one of the main duties is assisting teachers with film strips, tapes, and re- cords. The Librarian’s Banquet this year was held at Meadow Farms. This is a free banquet for all student librarians. The new officers for next year were announced at the banquet. QUILL SCROLL The ROCKETTE has been a member of the National Quill and Scroll Society for four years. Quill and Scroll is an honorary society for high school journalists. Each year the newspaper holds a banquet to honor all members of the staff and especially the new Quill and Scroll initiates. To become a member of Quill and Scroll, a staff member must display good journalistic practices while working on the ROCKETTE. New members are a part of a national society and receive publications of the Quill and Scroll magazine. 51 FHA ABOVE: Mrs. Southworth speaks at the style show. One hundred and nine Spencer High School girls from the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes were members of the Spencer Chap- ter of Future Homemakers of America this year. Highlights of this year’s activities were the State FHA Convention in June attended by Mary Ann Wojcik, Joan Forst, Mary La See, Kathy Krause, and Mrs. Southworth. In October, there was an initiation of thirty-two members to the FHA Club. For Christmas, they entertained all the school employees at a Christ- mas Coffee Hour. The FHA also sup- ported an orphan from India named, Malipeddi Prabhaker. In January, they enjoyed a tobogganing party at Per- kinstown. The FHA also hosted an open meeting on the drug problem which was presented by the Sheriffs Department of Marathon County in February. There was a celebration of the twenty-fifth year of FHA during FHA Week in April. A Style Show was presented on April 28 where the of- ficers for the coming year were an- nounced. The first activity of the year was the Mara- thon County Soils and Dairy Judging Contest held in October. Some of the other activities of the Future Farmers were the annual to- bogganing party, a homecoming float, and the annual farm institute night where the area farmers learned about feeding dairy cattle and soils fertil- ization. Members of the chapter also had the Little Brown Jug basketball tournament, in which the Junior boys eventually won the championship. The largest activity of the year was the raising of funds through concessions and the sale of corn and oats. With these proceeds 24 members of the chapter enjoyed a week of fishing in Canada. Awards were presented to two Se- niors at Awards Night, Herbert En- dries and Dwain Meinders, for their outstanding work in agriculture and industrial arts, respectively. F.F.A. OFFICERS: J. First, new marching techniques were learned and practiced in the band room and later put to use on the football field. This year Mr. Kober tried something new in the Rocket Band. He gave mem- bers placement tests in which assigned music was played. The members were then graded on their technical and interpretative abilities and placed accordingly. Spencer hosted the 1970 Marawood Conference Cavalcade of Bands in January. The day involved numerous clinic sessions with guest conductors, a solo prep- aration clinic, and a concert by the Wausau Brass Ensemble. The nine conference bands presented a concert in the evening which featured the one hundred and one ' member mass band made up of outstanding musicians from each band. The winter concert held February fifth was a great success for the band. For the first time in its history, the applause for the Rocket Band warranted an en- core. Hawaii Five-O, featuring a special percussion arrangement by Rick Neuen- feldt, was chosen and received a great ovation for both students and adults. Preparation for the Solo-Ensemble Contest in April began in February. A num- ber of musicians entered Class A in hopes of receiving a first at the local contest at Abbotsford and going on to the state contest at Eau Claire. With thirteen Seniors leaving due to graduation, the future of the band de- pends on those students entering from Junior High. RIGHT: Rocket Band brass section blows it again. 57 FRONT ROW: M. Other than having multi-colored robes for the 71 members of the chorus, the Spencer High School Chorus looked and sounded rather well this year. Under the direction of Mr. Henry Kober, they worked on new tech- niques to get a better sound and quality. The two techniques that were stressed the most were support and tone, which were attained by getting the air to come from the diaphragm rather than from the throat. Giving the sound a better quality was done by placing the hands on the sides of the face and singing with the mouth in an “0” shape. In December of 1969, the chorus sang at the Marshfield Convalescent Center. The madrigal, consisting of sixteen volunteers from the chorus, put on various performances for the com- munity during the school year. On April 3 there was a chorus and band contest and also a Solo and Ensemble on May 9 in Abbotsford. Last year, the chorus period was during the noon hour from 12:30 to 1:00. The student lounge, although small, provides a place for relaxation for the students during lunch hour and a place for the Seniors to study or socialize during their free hours. The Industrial Arts area, or the “shop” is equipped with individual worktables, welding tables, along with wood working material and other equipment. The large work area pro- vides the spaciousness needed for in- dustrial arts projects. A part of the 1968 building pro- ject was the new music department addition. It serves as a rehearsal room for the bands and chorus. Cabinets for instrument and uniform storage are along two walls and on the opposite side of the room are six individual practice rooms. A combination office- music library- repair shop completes the room. Next to the study hall is a small room known as the “publications room”, in which the newspaper staff plans, constructs, and prints the Rock- ette. The dark room is a small room lo- cated bewteen the chemistry room and the biology room. It has the basic facilities with which the Photo Club develops its pictures. 60 Chuck Graupner and Denny Luep- ke assist in Rocket play. Rockets tackle offensive Abby player. Final Victory Offsets 62 To many, the 1969 gridiron season at Spencer High left much to be desired, but despite their dismal 2-6 season, the Rockets provided a lot of thrilling foot- ball. After losing to Loyal, the Rockets pounced on Athens for their first confer- ence win. At Auburndale, Spencer provided some stiff competition, but finally succumbed to the powerful Apaches. The next week, the Rockets were beaten in the final seconds by Abbotsford, and things looked dark. After a week of rebuild- ing, Spencer’s squad looked encouraging, but lost to Marathon after a close battle. Homecoming provided the Rockets with a duel against Pittsville. Spencer play- ed an excellent game, despite the loss. Seven days later they lost a second half battle to Stratford after leading at the half. In the last game of the season at Edgar, the Rockets seemed to do no wrong as they pushed the Wildcats over the field, providing a happy ending for the season. For his outstanding play at center, Rick Neuenfeldt earned the honor of all- conference center for 1969. Rocket Defense lines up for action. Spencer school spirit. Under the new coach Richard Luther, the Spencer Rock- ets were only able to build a 2-17 record, but provided lots of thrills to the fans that did show up for the games. In most games, the Rockets knew they would be outclassed in both height and speed, but not in determination. This dis- advantage coupled with getting acquainted with a new coach and new methods made the season something less than successful. A few games into the season, a change was made in Rocket strategy, and a slowdown game evolved. This proved quite successful, as the Rocket offensive players gave up the ball less and less. High point of the season was the 43-41 up- set over Stratford. The slowdown kept many scores down to below offensive average for the opponents. Many times the Rockets struggled back into the game, but couldn’t con- trol its eventual course. The regional tournaments found a determined Rocket team fight until the very end and almost surprised the Greenwood Indians in the fourth quarter. Commented Coach Luther, “This past season has been a disappointment to all of us involved. After three long losing seasons the desire and dedication must be redeveloped to reverse this situation.” 64 FRONT ROW: K. Jasperson, E. Driekosen, G. Buse, L. rog, J. Pilz, J. Johnson, D. Shupe, S. This was a team of desire and finesse, and these fellows should do well in high school, pro- vided they keep this desire. Team captain for “A squad, and best defensive player was Tom Yost. High scorer was Tom Dumler and best re- bounder was Ronnie Mellenthin. For “B” squad, high scorer was Mike Greenwald, and best defensive player was Doug Reckner.
