Rocket Spencer High School Spencer, Wisconsin Volume XIII nineteen hundred sixty-eight Administration Pages 5-10 Classes Pages II-36 Grades Junior High Pages 65-82 Sports Pages 55-64 3 Advertising Pages 83-89 For eleven years before he came to Spencer, Mr. George Nikolay, school superintendent, taught social studies and physical education in the little townof Oxford, Wisconsin. In the school of only 90 students, Mr. Nikolay conducted phy. ed. classes for both boys and girls. After two years, he became the principal at that school. A graduate of Abbotsford High School, Mr. Nikolay earned his bachelor’s degree with a major in history from WSU-Stevens Point. During his last year at Oxford, he re- ceived his master’s degree in administration education at Madison. He is an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, and enjoys all types of sports including spectating at high school foot- ball and basketball games. In his spare time, he also enjoys reading and spending time with his wife, Sonja. and four children, Julie, Daniel, Lorie and Bernard. Since Mr. Nikolay is fond of working with people, he enjoys his job. In comparing Spencer with Oxford he says, “1 guess if you enjoy kids, basically, you like working with them in any school.” Superintendent Principal Mr. Roland Krueger “Real teaching comes with communication, and com- munication comes with knowing each other.” This is what Mr. Roland Krueger, principal of Spencer High, feels is the big advantage of teaching in a small school. He feels that our school has more educational and extra-curricular value than a larger school with a more extensive curriculum. Stu- dents are given greater opportunities to participate in all activities. Mr. Krueger graduated from Mosinee High School and was a salesman with the Milwaukee Etna Life Insurance Company for three years. He has been at Spencer since 1958 when he graduated from Wisconsin State University, Stevens Point. He has three sons, Mark, David, and James. In his spare time, Mr. Krueger enjoys gardening and putter- ing around the house making repairs and remodeling. It is not unusual to see Mr. Krueger staying after school nights and giving of his own time so that the student or- ganizations and publications might be successful. 6 School Board meet- ings were held regularly on the second Monday of every month throughout the school year. The board handled all the fi- nancial and business transactions of the school and are to be commended for their generous sup- port of the yearbook and other school organiza- tions. Mr. Vilas Luepke, member; Mr. Robert Keyes, member; Mr. Harold Prechel, president; Mr. El- roy Huber, clerk; Mr. Tom Schiro, treasurer. Sharing with the Administra- tion the responsibility of the regu- lation and operation of student affairs, the Student Council met in the student lounge during the noon period on Monday. Included in the events organized by the Stu- dent Administrator and his Coun- cil of Advisory Ministers in an ef- fort to generate student enthusi- asm was the provision of free transportation to an out-of-town Rocket basketball game. Along with biology, English, and drivers ed., the sophomores chose geometry, world history, and typ- ing as their electives. Homecoming royalty from the class of 1970 was Joyce Sessler and Jim Hopfen- sperger. Showing their ability to work to- gether, the Sophomores captured second place in the float competition with their entry, “Open Season on Falcons.” Cheerleading seemed to be a specialty among the Sophomores as they had four girls representing them on the two squads. Their initial attempt to work as a class came with the Homecoming Parade and their float entry, “Rock- ets Roar to Victory. Falcons Fly Low.” Judene Gripentrog and Jerry Sampson were the freshman representatives on the Homecoming Court. Three girls from the class of 1971, Patty Schweiss. Don- na Cournoyer, and Judene Gripentrog, cheered on the Ju- nior Varsity basketball team as J.V. cheerleaders. LouAnn Bonitz was chosen as the Valentine Queen can- didate for the freshman class and, through the strong sup- port offered by her classmates in both time and money, she was elected Queen of the 1968 Valentine Dance. Karl An- derson reigned as her escort and as King. Freshmen Back Valentine Queen 36 wwjiygifc Faye Gorst accepts award from Miss Smith for doing ex- ceptional work on the paper. Upon receiving notice that the newspaper from last year was awarded a Second Place Award from the International Quill and Scroll Society, members of the ROCKETTE staff became determined to earn a first for their issues of the paper. Throughout the year, “improvement” became the watchword. In the spring, Karen Wachholz was awarded first place in a statewide news- paper contest for her editorial concerning the lack of sidewalks in Spencer. The attempt to make the paper the voice of the students was worth the effort. Annual Pictures Yearly Events This year’s annual staff was small and inexperienced but through much hard work, sweat, and tears, it has produced a book representative of the 1967-68 school term. The staff learned about different techniques and design in yearbooks. In the course of the year, erasers were worn, glue was spilled, and deadlines were stretched. Barb Matter, editor. Rocket Band Displays Musical Even before the regular school term started, the Rocket band began its year of performances by bringing home a trophy for the Best Marching Band at the Loyal Corn Festival. Besides playing at the home football games, the band traveled to Stratford to perform one of their most memorable half time shows. To raise money for scholar- ships to summer music camps, the band sold candy and Christ- mas candles. The annual Pops Concert was held in the fall followed by the Mid-winter Concert in January. Spring brought more oppor- tunities to march in parades at Colby, Pittsville, Neillsville and in Spencer. A small group of band mem- bers donned wacky outfits to form the Hobo Band which per- formed when it was impractical for the entire band to appear. Brass Choir - 40 Drum Majorette, Barb Matter. Fashions made by the members were modeled by the girls themselves. In the spring. F.H.A. Week was ob- served with a different project on each day. The girls set Eau Claire as the destination of their annual trip. While three, they visited such places as the University and the Beauty Culture School. The Spencer chapter of the F.F.A. was very proud to have three of its members win a trophy in the Marathon County cattle judging contest in October. Jim Ivacic, David Cramer, and Mike Dimler competed with contestants from eleven other area schools. Among the many activities of the future farmers were the annual tobogganing party, a homecoming float, and farm institute night where area farmers and future farmers learned about cattle and weed control. Awards were presented to seniors, Robert Frank and Leo Wojcik, for their outstanding work in agriculture and indus- try, respectively. They began with the Pops Concert in the fall and con- tinued with the Winter Concert, the Spring Concert, and the Awards Night program. Our-of-town performances included the Marawood Conference clinic and the annual music festival at Pittsville. At the festival, the chorus did a fine job as they received a second in class B. Several vocal solos and ensembles were entered in the contest in April, and the chorus was proud to send one of its mem- bers, Karen Wachholz, to the state con- test at Eau Claire where she received a superior rating. Queen Carol Bruesewitz and King Joe Hagen and their court reigned over the festivities which began with the traditional burning of the opponent’s dummy at the bonfire on Friday night and lasted through the dance on Saturday night. The Junior class walked off with first place in the float competition while the Sophomores came in sec- ond. The Rocket football team also came in second in the annual rousing Homecoming game as they lost to the Abbotsford Falcons by a score of 45-0. The Rocket Band provided half time entertainment in its performance as a Schnitzel Band. Although defeat was in the air, spirits were not dampened and the evening’s dance was considered a success by both students and alumni. Music was pro- vided by the Shags. This year the Drama Club became more than a candy- selling. movie-showing organization. Spencer entered a play in the one-act play contest at Marathon and came home with a B-rating. Probably the proudest moment since the organization of the Masque and Bauble, both for Mrs. Rannow and for the members, was the presentation of the play, “Our Town” Alumnus Richard Gamble built a new light control board for the play and made all the money-making activities of the past two years worthwhile. Mrs. Rannow, advisor of the Masque and Bauble, spent many hours in helping the Club to grow to the heights it has reached in just two years. Even bigger and better things are promised for the future. 50 64Our Town99 Draws Capacity Crowds “Our Town”, Thorton Wilder’s play about a small New Hamp- shire community, was presented on March 29 and 30 as an all-school production. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors all worked together under the direction of Mrs. Esther Rannow, the Drama Club advisor. The play was presented in-the-round with a minimum of props. Miss Geraldine Smith headed the lighting department which con- sisted of a new light control board constructed by Dick Gamble. Mrs. Rannow relaxes after the final performance of “Our Town”. Mrs. Florence Knauf was head of the make-up crew. Cast and crew alike put in long hours to make this probably the finest play ever at Spencer High. Faye Gorst, Student Director. FRONT ROW: Mrs. E. They dropped their first three games and were unable to hold down the Abbotsford Falcons at Home- coming, losing that game 45-0. Teamwork, good ball control, and a strong defense brought the Rockets back to victory in their next three games as they allowed their opponents a grand total of just six points. With an exceptionally determined spirit on the part ol both players and fans, the Rockets staged the biggest near upset of the season against Stratford, rated number one among the small schools in the state of Wisconsin. It was the last game for eight seniors and amid the snowstorm and cheers, they made it a memorable one. 56 Offensive Line-up with Experience Loyal 19 Spencer 0 Pittsville 34 Spencer 12 Auburndale 19 Spencer 6 Abbotsford 45 Spencer H.C. 0 Edgar 6 Spencer 14 Marathon 0 Spencer 22 Athens 0 Spencer 14 Stratford 14 Spencer 13 l) j ensive Line-up Miss Crandall directs the course of the 600-yard run. Comp 1iments of SPENCER BEAUTY SHOP Phone 659-2731 Spencer, Wisconsin Time marches on, its measured tread Still echoes in these hallowed halls; And memories wind around the heart Like the ivy clinging to its walls. It is a fount where knowledge flows And thirsty minds may drink their fill; Where characters are shaped and forged With patience and enduring skill. It’s here that men of wisdom toil' To mold and shape youth’s pliant clay. Here burns the flaming torch of truth, A beacon light upon life’s way. Reginald Holmes Acknowledgments I would like to thank the members of my staff who took pride in their work on this annual and spent many long hours trying to make it a success. I would like to express my appreciation to Mr. Keel for the many trips he made for us and, also, to Mr. Fred Smel- zer and Miss Geraldine Smith who helped us in taking, de- veloping, and printing pictures. A final thank-you to Mr. Shaw and the administration for the patience they had with us throughout the year. 90 Barb Matter Editor
