THE 1966 ROCKET You did a great job. OUR CLASS OF 66 - FIRST GRADUATES OF THE NEW S.H.S. ROUTINE Would you believe. . .a BIRD FEED ER? Mr. Shaw's sophomore typists Empty - No, the Annual Staff occupies 'em! r ! -«■ e V PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Although messages usually present a point of view, a personal preference mo- tivates me to present this first of its kind as a questioning. Throughout history man has fought and died for an idea, or you might call it an ideal, called “the dignity of man.” It is, I think, important to note that whenever and wherever he has achieved it, he has cherished it above all else he does or can achieve. This, obviously, leads to a series of questions. What is dignity? Why is it sought, desired, and respected by all men? What does it consist of and how does one achieve it? When does one have it or lack it? As a person grows in knowledge and maturity, should he not also grow indigni- ty? Should not each person place at the top of his list of desired achievements, DIGNITY? If so, when does one start? ADMINISTRATOR’S MESSAGE Certain basic needs are common to most people and most times. A child’s needs are at first intensely and narrowly personal, but as he matures, they broaden and become more generally socialized. Struggling to satisfy his needs, students seek to maintain the precarious balance between personal happiness and social ap- proval, and that is no easy task. I wish to suggest two ways to help you meet this challenge. The first and most important is to READ; read widely, yet selectively and carefully. The second suggestion is to maintain a close association with friends who will help you to know what is right and better still, to do what is right. Roland M. Krueger MR. They became ac- f quainted with the school rules and customs after a i few hard knocks. , The class is closely knit. They all show up for all class sponsored activities, and they all } work together to achieve success. Unified backing such as this, will prove very beneficial in the fu- ture. CONCERT AND Despite the cold and rain, the band nobly performed its duties at the football and basketball games. With only a min- imum of complaints, the band marched in all the required parades. The scene was hectic at the solo and ensemble fes- tivals, as the members jostled their memories to see what they had forgotten. The only thing left to do was straighten up and do the best possible. And the best turned out to be a first rating for the band in Class C. Mr. Kober, our new director, can be very proud of this. Throughout the year the band put its best side forward. Our majorette. The Chorus faithfully pro- vided entertainment for the pub- lic in its concerts throughout the year. At contest, the chorus did a fine job. Even the nervous jitters of the contestants at the solo and ensemble festival didn't stop them from doing well. At the last PTL meeting the madri- gal was asked to entertain. And entertain it did, with songs from shows such as The Sound of Music. Both the conversation that introduced the numbers and the decorated tables gave the at- mosphere of informality. The FHA Chapter proved just that this year. With the money earned by the usual activities of dances, bake sales, and candy sales, the girls sponsored a Japanese girl, Leung Choi Hung, for a year. The Chapter also sponsored a Career Night Program, and still had enough money left to pay for a group trip down to Milwaukee. Leung Choi Hung President Pat at Style Show BACK ROW: K. Beels, D. One of the greatest achievements of the year for Spencer stu- dents was the improve- ment of our paper, the ROCKETTE. Under the guidance of Miss Smith, our information media became just that--in- formative. The news was news, and style of writing fresh, and the pictures delightful. In truth, the job was really well done. Quill Scroll Banquet BACK ROW: M. Graff, D. Mellenthin, S. Stelson, S, Bargander, B. Kuehmichel, P. Staege, M. Keyes. THIRD ROW: J. Boock, R. Straub, S.
