Tender arms had hfted hIs wounded body, pulled the r1p cord of hIs parachute and gently l r h1m out of the plane Vinh an excrucIatIng jerk h1s parachute had opened then he remembered no more Now he was tangled In the massed ropes and cords of hIs parachute floatmg on hIs back held up partly by h1s own feeble efforts partly by the great bull: of the chu e I hIch stxll bxllowed ID the mghr breezes but was settlIng slowly Into the sea HIs mmd was qulet now The drums were slowly dymg awav Into a dromng hummmg sound but the famxlxar theme was stIll there creepmg by hIm upon the waters Behmd the vIolIns behlnd the cellos and the woodwInds he could hear the slowly rIsIng Crescendo of an organ Its deep comfortmg tones swellmg out the notes of that famIlIar theme HIs eyehds closed As he lIstened hIs puzzled m1nd reached out and hnally caught the meanxng of those notes as the theme rolled on he felt hlmself lllted up and away from the sea translated Into the scene that had InspIred that heavenly musxc It was the fmal act of Pam af Formxng a great V two rows of stalwart noble lcmghts In shlnlng armor wIth helmets on thelr heads and shxelds at thelr SldCS knelt reverently before an altar On the altar glowzng In perfect beauty shone the Holy GraIl' The young p1lot was overcome by a sense of awe He suddenly felt small and fnghtened What chIldIsh enthuslasm had hlled hIs boylsh soul when sIttIng In the opera house he had flrst wxtnessed thIs scene Now as he stood In the d zzlmg lIght of the altar surrounded by the lcneelmg lcnlghts breathlng In that trIum phant musIc how much a stranger he felt' But 1s he watched the musIc softened the lIght became less blmdmg s eyes opened wlde wIth wonder as he became aware that these were no longer lcmghts of old In burmshed armor Instead the lcneellng figures were wearmg leather jackets and lchalcl SUIIS' Each wore 1 cap respendent wIth Its pan- of sllyer wIngs sllghtly cocked on the bowed head Here were the brave young men of hIs own age comrades of the a1r' oy and antxclpatnon hll d hIs wmry soul 1s he saw them there was no more paIn In hIs shoulder hls heart was upltftcd and completely happy He toolc hIs place In the lIne of lcneelmg flyers The hlgh sIlycrtonc uolms the hummmg cellos the comfcrtmg tones of the organ were bflhgllig a quxct close to that f1mIlIar theme Tln musnc crept by upon the waters The hrst famt strealcs of dawn w ere breilcxng oyer th mst expanses of the Pacl c VIRGINIA CHAI LIN!
