Webster defines architecture as the art or practice of designing and building structures and especially habitable ones. Welt, Spelman Cattege has the reputation of being a beautiful campus within the Adams University Center. But it wasn? afways that way. The Erst classroom at Spelman Catlege ortgfnated tn the basement of Friendship Baptist Church of Atlanta, Ga. Blacks were just released from bondage and dtdnht own land, therefore the church served as the social. educational, and spiritual meeting place. In :383, Spelman Seminary moved from the basement to the hand that she sits on now. At that time, the land was the site of old army barracks. Union Hath now comparable to Gites Hall, was the center of the educationat development for black women. Before the 1900's, Spelman's Rockefeller Hall, Packard Half, and Giles Halt were developed, weH-designeo' to remain standing. Today. Spelman has several buttdt'ngs fold and neuO that are representative of t'habitabte ones due to the conscious ehfort to keep the grounds standing with good educational and living facilities. Recently, the administrative statTpt-esented new designs for facht'tt'es such as a Living Learning Center I! with fiving accomodatians for students and visitors, and an extended version of Manley Center with a new took in the cafeteria. bookstore. post office, and administrative offices. After some mentors hie structures such as Morgan Hat! and Chadwick Hall he ve been destroyed. facilities such as LLC and Manley Center are emerging to enhance the campus ofyesterday to one of today? architectural designs. Another tradition that has improved during the Edu 03 11 OH transition 1's the education that is offered at Spelman. Our foreststers were Involved in more practical lessons such as home economics. millinery, music, and industrial arts, along with the traditionat' mathematics, English and geography courses that were offered. Currently, within the watts of Gites. Rockefeller, Taptey. and other conference rooms around the campus, Spetman offers the best quality of a h'berat' arts education to keep the purpose of our founders alive - to give btack women a weH-rouno'ed education. Included in the eurricutum are classes from Engh'sh, economics. math, computer science, biology. chemistry. physics, pre- med. business, psychoiogy, sociology, philosophy, foreign languages, music, drama, art, and other science and sociat science fields. Atong with the above divisions Spelman also offers the Women's Center for the additionat assistance in writing and research. and student exchange programs with other colleges in the United States and fnternatfonat'ty, to name a few.
