Spelman College, since 1881. has stood proudly behind the shield of wom- anhood, service. and scholastic achieve- ment. A Spelman woman takes pride in herself, as well as, her school. As we arrive at our centennial Spelman College 1981, would like it to be known that we remember our humble beginnings and take pride in our accomplishments.

Black Women In The South. Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, later known as Spelman College, emerged from the mist of much turmoil and personal unrest. Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles had been long standing friends; They both shared the feeling of disqust when reflecting on the plight of the Black female. During a time when poverty and illiteracy were commonplace among the Black population, these two friends decided to do something to upgrade the education of the Black female A seminary for Black women in the south would be the answer to their prayers. It took a lot of prayers and hard work before the two women were able to open the doors of their school for the first time.
