Her visit was sponsored by the Spelman Student Government Association. The students listened carefully to the famous low soft-spoken sensuous voice of the Cat Lady IBat Man Famel as she spoke of her young life as an abused child in North Carolina. Forced to leave home by an unloving stepfather Ms. Kitt was sent to her aunt in New York wearing a little tag that sai - I am Eartha Mae Kitt. Miss Kitt went to Julliard on a full scholarship and attended the New York School of Performing Art prior to traveling around the world as a dancer singer interpreter and seamstress. .x -,Q 'if msc. 3 , ..- - aw: v Solving Children's problems takes your head, heart, and mind, Jean Young lMrs. Andrew Young Jr.l told her Spelman audience during a special convocation in December. As National Chairperson of the International Year of the Child Mrs. Young admitted that the world community of the United Nations couldn t solve the problems of children in one year but the organization could help people to recognize problems and to begin a solution process. According to Mrs. Young the International Year of the Child is an outgrowth of a Belgium priest s idea to have a celebration of declaration for the rights of the child and their rights to a free education. With this basis for the year each country of the United Nations attempts to reach out to the world s children. America has its share of concerns and problems Mrs. Young pointed out. We have ten million poor youngsters illiterates in our schools a suicide rate among children that has tripled and a high infant mortality. As the wife of the former ambassador to the United Nations Mrs. Young reminded her Spelman audience that ' We as people who suffer must have a special sensitivity to those in need. 9 7 7 9 3 9 7 KK 73 H 1 7 1 9 v S i7 'QS W A V6 f x ii I x E P t F 'N ,s ,M .
