'PF llilillt' Born in St Louis Missouri in 1936 Ambassador McHenry was raised across Mississippi in East St Louis Illinois He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1957 and received his Master s Degree in 1959 After an extensive study of international law and organizations he joined the Department of State where he served ifrom 1963 to 19717 in various positions related to United States policy regarding international organizations Ambassador McHenry reentered government service in 1976 as a part of the Carter administration s State Department transition staff Subsequently the President appointed the Ambassador to the United States Delegation to the United Nations. At the United Nations he served as Advisor and Alternate Representative to the Trusteeship Council' Alternate Representative to the Seminar on Apartheid and Racial Discrimination' Delegate to the International Conference on Human Rightsg and Consultant to the United States Congressional Delegation to the Inter- Parliamentary Union. The Ambassador was also Deputy Representative to the Security Council. lSpelman International, March, 19801 Needless to say fthe photo speaks for itselfl Leon Bates, pianist, received the undivided attention of his Spelman audience as he gave an informal presentation in a combination concertj workshop in Sisters Chapel. Warming up at Spelman's keyboard with Beethoven's First Movement Sonata in B-Flat Major Op. 22, Mr. Bates later delighted his audiences with Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag. His concert also included Alborada del gracioso by Ravel and Ethude-Tableau in D Major Op. 39, No. 9 by Rachmaninoff. Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Bates began his piano study at the age of six, continued at the Settlement Music School and later studied with Natalie Hinderas at Temple University s College of Music. Music is a personal and personable experience he explained.
