He then worked for a year with the National Youth Arhninisw tration. After doing further study at Purdue University in Industrial Psychol- ogy, Mr. Wilson taught Industrial Arts at his alma mater and then served in the capacity of Superin- tendent of Buildings and Grounds until June 30, 1955. The man, who enhanced the aesthetic life of .. l Spelman College has left with us golden mentor i Tials which are exemplary of his love and his ideals. Forever will stand the Spelman College Glee Club. the A-M-S Chorus, and the Depart- ments of Music at Spelman College, Leland Col- lege, Alabama State Teachers, College, and More- house College. The beauty of the music which comes from the groups he led will echo to some extent the training, the resolution. and the per- fectionism that he instilled in them. Forever will stand his work at the Library of i Congress, where he was invited in 195! to con- sider the status of music during the past one hun- dred years. He was also :1 Recording Fellow for the Music Archives. Forever will resound the words of the lectures on European and American music at the 'Iiangle- wood Roundtable and at the opening of the Gen- Dr. Willis L. Forever will be heard and seen the vitleo tape he made as an expert on the spiritual traditions of the Negro. This video tape was one of a series of fifteen half-hour programs produced by VVHYY-T for the National Educational Television. Always must be sung by Spelman students the chapel and vesper selections with zeal, depth and sincerity as if Dr. James were conducting the ses- sion. All of these will be and must be done because: A Man came here in ,33 Emdite, Resolute Bold A Spirit Dwell; here Eternally Surging, loving Gold. INTRODUCTION We live through Time at Spelman, that little piece of time that is ours. But somehow it is not only ours. It is the summing up of all the changes that confront us in our daily lives. It is a resistless, never ending and ever moving force. This is the Exit out of the constancy of routine into a Time of constant changes. The door is open, and here is your guide, Reflections. Like a Hash of lightning, the Time of the initial impression exists and then expires-but not without leaving its marks. . Atlanta. 53- Atlanm. 63- MunnL Fla. 113 A MESSAGE FROM DR. ALBERT E. MANLEY, President of Spelman College This is the age of the woman, particularly the educated woman. Changes that have taken place in the lives of educated women within the last two decades are astounding. Women graduates of the 150's are no longer restricted to established feminine life styles. The basic structure of womanls relationship to the world of work has changed. She lives in an in- dustrialized urban society and there are many more jobs for which she is trained and well-suited. Government, industry, research and science are just some of the helds in which women have shown competent abilities. No longer must a woman devote her time exclusively to domestic responsibilities. Steady advances in the technology of housekeeping now allow women ample time for vocational fulfillment. No longer must a woman devote three or more decades to child rearing. Through planned parenthood she can collapse the span of years previously devoted to maternal responsibilities. The increased educational achievement of women has given a double stimulus to their employment. The tradi- tional attitudes of men about working women are shifting. Many men now encourage their wives to seek a career. However, these broad environmental changes merely set the limits within which the woman plans and adapts to her life's circumstances. A second set of forces have been of equal importance in in- fluencing women's life styles. These are individual values and goals. No matter what plan a young woman develops for her life and work, her ability to realize these goals will be influenced by the kind of education she receives. Spelman offers each of you a Firm grounding in the liberal arts. The emphasis is on fundamental subjects in the humanities, science, language and fine arts. Within this scope of courses the indi- vidual student can nurture and develop basic abilities and talents. You are fortunate to be college women in this age. You will suffer no restrictions or inhibitions. Your career today can indeed be your profession tomorrow. .l. .II Manley E. President Albert 116 --' Vr'hi- . . . . . Dr. Oran W. Smith and Miriam Oliver Thoughts and Reflections are as many- colored and swiEt-changing as the sunset. They soar up into new realms and are as endless and various as life itself, pictures and words may be many-colored but they merely plod along in pursuit of an accurate portrayal of Thoughts and ReHections. The ReHcctions 1967 represents just this world of many changes and a world of various ideas. However, if ideas are to be expressed and communicated Lo others, the words and pic- tures whose meanings are most suitable must be found. And so with this in mind, we realize that time is the greatest of all inconstancies. As we grow and mature in age, it will effect our limbs, health, strength, and physical features, but never the printed book of Reflections of 1967.
