Often it leaves us faced with the Perplexity of the World of Problems. Dedication There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reHccts it. Vesalius in Zante Dean 0. W. Eagleson, with his patient way, his radium smile, his easy and confident manner, serves to spread light for Spelman students. He is never too busy to aid in problem solving or to administer advice and at the same time perform his many duties-Dcan of Instructions, 'lieacher, and Friend of Students. These are reasons that we have chosen this way to express our appre- ciation to him: For to us he has been both a candle, lighting Lhc way to academic excellence, and a mirror, reflecting the glimmering aura of success. Swanstrom, Supervisor of Dining Hall Mrs. Laveltc Dr. Clinton Warner J1; and Miss Kendricks Infirmary Staff Mrs. Turner Dedication of The YWCA Room to Mrs. Manley DOROTHY SHEPARD MANLEY She came from a professional and academic fam- ily. Her father, Dr. Charles H. Shepard, was super- intendent and chief surgeon 0f? the Lincoln Hos- pital in Durham, North Carolina. Her uncle, Dr. James E. Shepard, was founder and first president of North Carolina College at Durham. Dorothy thus stepped easily and simply into the life of Spel- man, and Spelman was charmed with its bright. dainty and gracious First lady. Time soon revealed Dorothy Manlefs depth and inner strength. She was that rare phenomenon, a well-disciplined, well-rounded woman. She was iirm, strong and courageous without sacrificing any of her warmth and gentleness; she was Wise, order- ly, active, yet never lost her gaiety and spontaneity. What an example for the Spelman girls who came in contact with her. And well or sick, Dorothy Man- leyis first concern was for these girls. Whenever the Opportunity arose, she urged them to greater self- development, including personal charm. To her husband she was always a comforting YWCA Members. companion, forgetting herself in his service, until she reached that personal individuality, that qual- ity of her own that impressed itself upon us all. To the Young VVommfs Christian Association, she devoted many years of service. She worked as a teenager in summer conferences, as an instructor at North Carolina State, and she served as special projects advisor. At Spelman, there is special gratitude for the many years of earnest work and devotion Mrs. Manley gave to the Spclman YWCA. She served as sponsor and advisor from 1953 through 1958 on the campus and she worked to make the Spelman Y one of the best wcll-rounded Student ttY's . Until her death, Dorothy Shepard Manley gave her alllinkall in support of the Student YWCA for she always CODSidCYCd herself a ustudent 0f the times? The Young VVomenk Christian Association has lost a great friend, student and teacher. SENIOR CLASS 9,1, ? Johnson Mrs. Mamie Edna Williams Although the hard work and worries are over, there still remains the anxiety of whether or not the students will be proud of their 1966 REFLECTIONS. The staff sacriftced a great deal of time and a lot of fun: The REFLECTIONS has meant a great deal to us, not only because we have worked so hard on the annual, but also be cause we have tried to preserve the precious memories of the 1966 year at Spelman. It is our hope that the 1966 REFLECTIONS can be used in the future as a means of reflecting to our days at Spelman-a most treasured phase in our lives. As you look at your annual, may you be reminded of Spelman and the many mem- ories, both tangible and intangible, that it holds for all of you: The bell 0n Packard Hall whose bellowing tones call us to classes. vespers and bedtime; the ivy covered walls that seem to speak of wisdom and gay laughter echoing throughout our campus; the beauty and grandeur of our campus; the ideals and principles of a Spelmanite; and most of all, the warmth of friendship and the understanding oF knowledge. The staff wishes to thank Mrs. Helen Morgan, publicationls coord- inator, Mr. 1.0 Caruthers, sponsor and you, the student body of Spelman College. Mary C. Cook Editor-in-chief ReHections 1955 144
